Jeff Heitzenrater

Head Coach

Heitzenrater is in his 25th year with the university, and worked the first seven years in the Office of Admission. A 1990 graduate of Duke University, Heitzenrater was a 400 and 800 meter runner for the Blue Devils track team under Hall of Fame coach Al Buehler. He holds a USA Track & Field Level 2 Certification in Endurance Events and Jumps and is a member of the U.S. Track & Field Coaches Association. Heitzenrater also received a Masters in Sport Administration from Belmont University in 2009. Amber Gilliam

Assistant Coach

Gilliam enters her seventh year as Sewanees assistant womens basketball coach. Gilliam came to the Mountain from Judson College, where she was assistant softball and assistant basketball coach. Both teams Gilliam coached in 2006-07 competed at the national level and were ranked in the top 10 in the nation by the United States College Athletic Association (USCAA). Gilliam also coached basketball at the grade-school level under coach Al Tipps from 2000-2004. Coach Gilliam is a 2006 graduate of Judson (B.S., psychology), where she was a member of the softball and basketball teams. On the softball diamond, Gilliam was named Best Overall Player in 2004, won the Hustle Award in 2003, and was Defensive Player of the Year two years in a row. In 2005, the Eagles competed in the USCAA 2005 National Softball Tournament. On the basketball court, Gilliam was named Best Overall Player two years, was a co-captain from 2003 until 2006, and competed in the USCAA national tournament twice. In 2006, Gilliam received Judsons Mary Whitfield Lee Outstanding Senior Athlete Award. The 2002 Franklin County High School graduate also played softball and basketball at FCHS, where she won numerous awards and accolades. She is married to Nathan Gilliam and they have one daughter, Isabella.

Jason Grimes

Assistant Coach

Grimes was an All-SAA performer in cross country. Continuing to run, Grimes is now competing in ultra-marathons. He won the Yeti Snakebite 50 miler in Lithia Springs, Ga. in August. His family lives in Charleston, S.C.
