Max Obermiller

Head Coach

Obermiller has built and maintained one of the most successful programs in all of NCAA Division III swimming and diving. During his Sewanee tenure, Obermiller has guided his swimmers to new school records in every event. In the past two seasons, Sewanee has set 20 school and conference records, placed 29 swimmers on the all-conference teams, and had six All-Americans. Back in 1999, the Tigers won the SCAC women's title while breaking the program's wins total with 14 victories. Outside the pool, Obermiller's teams have been academic All-America for 39 consecutive semesters. A native of Grinnell, Iowa, Obermiller earned his bachelor's degree in psychology from Beloit College (Wisc.) in 1979. He earned his master's in exercise and sports science from East Carolina in 1989. Obermiller lives in Sewanee, Tenn.and has three children: Erik, 23, Rachel, 21, and Anna, 18. Doug Alban

Assistant Coach

Alban, who has been at Sewanee the past two seasons, helped the Tigers set numerous school and conference records. Additionally, former student-athletes , , and won Senior Athlete of the Year honors at the University of the South under head coach and Alban. Finally, under Alban's leadership Day, Link, and rising senior earned NCAA All-American honors over the past two seasons. "Doug is simply incredible," said Obermiller. "I've been a college coach for 25 years and most of my assistants have gone on to be head coaches or top assistants at other fine programs. Doug may be better than all of them." In addition to his excellence as a college coach, Alban does online master's coaching with triathletes throughout the United States. He also coaches and teaches lessons at the Towson Golf and Country Club, and assists Obermiller with the local Sewanee swim programs. For the University, Alban has taught Beginning Swimming PE classes the past two years. An avid student of the sport, Alban has also worked hard developing weight lifting protocols, dry-land training, and cutting-edge stroke techniques for the Tigers. "Frankly, I've never worked with anyone that has worked so diligently in order to see a program succeed," said Obermiller. "Doug's loyalty to the team, the school and me is never lacking. I also coach diving and honestly, if I had asked Doug to do it, he would have. He is an amazing friend and an equally amazing coach. I feel blessed that he has chosen to coach on this level. His devotion to all the tasks he is assigned, his love of the team, and the professional way he carries himself, makes him look more like a savvy veteran rather than a young man that has spent just four years in the ranks of college coaching." Alban came to Sewanee from Baltimore, Md. where in August 2009, Alban was hired as the graduate assistant for Goucher College. He received his masters degree in education had over 20 school records set and also began the Goucher Masters Swim Program. Most recently, Doug coaches the masters program at the North Baltimore Aquatic Club, where he coached 10 national champions. Alban received a Bachelor's Degree in Mathematical Sciences from Loyola College in Maryland and competed all four years at the Division I level, being a finalist in three events at every conference championship and qualifying for the ECA Championships each year. Upon graduating, Alban had top-five times in the the 100m and 200m backstroke as well as the 1,000m and 1,650 free stroke. Also Alban had records in the 200m and 400m medley relays. Alban began his coaching career by coaching the senior/junior level kids of the Big Blue Swim Club every summer in college. Also Alban coached the Pocantico Hills Summer swim team in the Northern Wetchester Swimming Association. Following college he became the assistant coach for the Wappingers Central School District high swim team. Alban also coached a summer country club team in Baltimore, Md.
