Scott Yoder

Head Coach

Shenandoah University entered a new era with its football program in January 2013 with the addition of Scott Yoder as its head coach. Yoder, a 2001 Hobart College graduate, is the third head coach since Shenandoah reinstated football in 2000. In 2021, he became the program's all-time wins leader following a week 10 victory over Newport News Apprentice. Yoder came to SU after 12 years as an assistant coach at his alma mater. For the last six years of his time at the Geneva, N.Y. school, Yoder was the defensive coordinator for the Liberty League power. Including 2011 and 2012, the squad captured five LL titles during Yoder's time on staff. In 2012, Yoder's defense helped the Statesmen to a 12-1 record, that league championship and an appearance in the NCAA quarterfinals. Hobart was eliminated from the playoffs with a quarterfinal round loss to eventual national runner-up St. Thomas (Minn.). Yoder's squad opened the 2012 playoffs with a 38-20 victory over ODAC champion Washington & Lee. In that game, the Statesmen held the Generals to nearly 200 yards under their season offensive yardage on the way to the 18-point victory. Hobart also led the Liberty League in total defense, allowing just 17.3 points and 241.0 yards per game. Four players were named first team All-Liberty League with two being unanimous selections and one, sophomore defensive end Tyre Coleman, named as the league's Defensive Player of the Year. The Statesmen ended the year with the fifth ranked defense in the nation and finished in the top 10 nationally in pass defense and sacks. Prior to his time on the defensive side of the ball, Yoder mentored a talented and deep corps of receivers, including two All-Liberty League selections in 2004. Yoder helped guide the Statesmen to the 2000 Patriot League Championship and the program’s 23rd NCAA postseason appearance. With the Hornets, Yoder now coaches the offensive line after serving as his own defensive coordinator from 2013-16. He also serves the department as a member of the Hornets RED team on racial equality and diversity. In 2021, Yoder began a term of NCAA service on the South Region regional advisory committee. This committee assists the national committee in determining regional rankings and selecting the NCAA playoff field. Yoder and his wife, Alyson, are the parents of three sons: William, Chase and Jaxson.

Stan Hodgin

Associate Head Coach

Heading up the Hornets offense is veteran high school and college coach Stan Hodgin. Hodgin came to Shenandoah in 2013 after two seasons as the offensive coordinator at now-former ODAC member Emory & Henry. In June, 2022, Hodgin was promoted to associate head coach. He retains his offensive coordinator responsibilities in this new position. In 2012, Hodgin's offense averaged a second-best-in-the-league 264.3 yards passing and three players earned All-ODAC honors. Prior to his experience with the Wasps, Hodgin was the quarterbacks coach at Averett University in 2010 and a high school head coach, offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach for 20 years. In addition to leading offenses that have averaged over 380 yards and 31 points per game, Hodgin has coached five players that eventually played professional football and every quarterback he tutored in high school and college has advanced to play at the next level. With the Hornets, Hodgin has run an offense that has set every significant passing record and saw quarterback Hayden Bauserman '18 honored as the 2018 Lanier Award winner as the best DII/DIII/NAIA player in the commonwealth of Virginia. Bauserman was also a finalist for the Gagliardi Award. In 2021, first-year Steven Hugney threw for nearly 1700 yards and was named as the ODAC Rookie of the Year. In his time coordinating the SU offense, 29 players on that side of the ball have earned All-ODAC accolades with 10 of those being first team picks. Additionally, Hayden Bauserman '18 and Casey Stewart '19 have both been finalists for the Touchdown Club of Richmond Player of the Year honors. Bauserman earned that accolade in 2018. In 2020, Hodgin was selected for a four-year term on the NCAA football rules committee. He is one of three Division III members on the committee and the only assistant coach. Hodgin and his wife, Laurie, are the parents of four children: Ashley, Zoe, Casey, and Delaney.

He coordinates a unit that helped Shenandoah to an ODAC-era best seven wins in 2021 and held opponents two opponents: DII Emory & Henry and 2021 ODAC champion Washington & Lee, to seven points or less in a pair of SU wins. The Hornets defensive line coach during his entire tenure on staff, Oliver transitioned from a part-time role to a full-time spot in June, 2012 and was promoted in August 2017 to run game coordinator under former defensive coordinator Brock McCullough.
