VanLaningham's athletes achieved great success, as the list of accolades they earned are as impressive as the list is long: one USA Olympic Trials runner-up finish, two NCAA All-American honors, seven NCAA finalist and first round qualifiers, four individual conference championships, 11 MVC All-Conference honorees, 12 SIU Top-10 all-time marks, one MVC Meet Record, three MVC Outstanding Field Athletes, two MVC Scholar Athletes of the Week, two USATFCCCA All-Academic Team honors, and one CoSIDA Academic All-American. Prior to arriving in Carbondale, VanLaningham coached at Sacramento State.
