Jacob Leyrer
Head Coach
Leyrer, who enters his third year at SAU, will make a seamless transition into overseeing the women's program while also continuing to serve in his current capacity as head men's coach, helping to unify the two programs. Leyrer not only does bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to Spring Arbor from his playing and coaching careers, but also a tremendous background in marketing and promotions. In addition to serving as the varsity coach at Lansing Christian High School, Leyrer has been the tour director and owner for the Michigan Players Junior Golf Tour for the past seven years, where, under his direction, the Tour has doubled the number of events and players. Prior to his time with the Michigan Players Junior Golf Tour, he was an assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Lakewood High School for three years and worked on becoming a Head Golf Professional. During his apprenticeship, Leyrer not only built his knowledge of the game, but developed event planning strategies and was trained to become a general manager of golf operations. After turning pro in 2007, Leyrer has taught numerous collegiate golfers and continues to build the game of golf in the state of Michigan. Leyrer attended East Lansing High School, and was a member of the 2000 MHSAA Division II State Championship golf team. After high school, he was the captain of the Lansing Community College golf team, where he played for two seasons and worked on his associate's degree in marketing. He and his wife, Ashlyn, reside in Lansing, Michigan and have three children, Jacob, Jr., Gwenyth and Vivian. Erik Baum begins his first season as the head coach of the Spring Arbor University women's golf program in 2016-17. "Erik will be a great asset for this program and I'm looking forward to working with him," said Jacob Leyrer, Director of Golf Programs at SAU. "He brings an excitement to his coaching approach and is looking to help build this program to national championship contenders!" A Jackson native, Baum has been in education for the last nine years, working as a special education teacher in Jackson County. He has also been involved with athletics and coaching for more than a decade, including serving as the assistant varsity golf coach at Western High School for the last four seasons. Baum has dedicated much of his time to crafting his golf expertise over the last seven years, providing group and personal lessons, as well as working with various youth and adult entities to further grow the game. "I am genuinely thrilled to continue my coaching career with the women's golf team here at Spring Arbor University," said Baum. "I would like to sincerely thank Spring Arbor University, the athletic department staff, and Coach Jacob Leyrer for this incredible opportunity. I am extremely enthusiastic for the opportunity to help guide collegiate student-athletes toward their academic, athletic and life goals."
