Tom Giovatto

Head Coach

Giovatto has made an impact in his eight seasons at the helm of the Terriers.  Heading into the 2014 campaign, Giovatto holds a 59-48-17 overall record while compiling a 29-28-8 conference and is 2-1 in Northeast Conference playoff competition.  The veteran coach guided the team to their first Northeast Conference championship since 1998 after SFBK came from behind to defeat Bryant University in overtime, 3-2, in the championship game.  With the win, the Terriers claimed the conferences automatic bid and reached the First Round of the NCAA College Cup for the first time since 1982 when they squared off against the #16 ranked Penn State Nittany Lions.  With a dynamic offensive and defensive playbook in Giovattos arsenal, the Terriers were ranked 24th in the entire NCAA in Save Percentage (.817) while also placing among the top-50 teams in Scoring Offense (1.63), Shutout Percentage (0.37), Team Goals Against Average (0.87), Total Goals (31) and Wins-Loses-Tied Percentage (0.658).  At seasons end, he was recognized as the 2013 National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) North Atlantic Region Coach of the Year and was also the recipient of the 2013 BigAppleSoccer.com Coach of the Year.  In his sophomore season back in 2008, the team sparkled as they finished the season with an 11-4-3 mark, thanks in part to a remarkable eight-match winning streak (spanning from September 15th to October 24th).  The following season, the Terriers continued to exhibit success as they posted their second straight double-digit win total, finishing the year at 10-6-2 and a remarkable 7-2-1 conference record.  The achievement helped SFBK lock the second seed in the conference tournament, thus ending a ten-year postseason drought.  Prior to his promotion to head coach, he served as the assistant coach of the Terriers team in 2006.  Giovatto was responsible for all the recruiting efforts while overseeing the scouting duties on the opposing teams.  Giovatto received his first chance to coach collegiate soccer back in 2001 as he was hired as an assistant coach at Saint Peters University (Jersey City, New Jersey).  He aided in all aspects of the mens soccer program, which included recruiting and fund raising efforts.  In 2003, Giovatto got his first taste of success as the Peacocks captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship while posting a school-high 18 wins.  Saint Peters advanced to the second round of the NCAA Mens College Cup that season.  Back in December of 2009, Saint Peters University honored the entire 2003 squad by enshrining them into the schools Hall of Fame.  After a two-year stint at Saint Peters, Giovatto headed to Stony Brook University as an assistant coach.  As part of the staff, Giovatto was responsible for all on-field coaching duties, while assisting in all the recruiting processes, fund-raising and was responsible for scheduling matches for the season.  On the field, the university achieved the most wins in the schools history and capped off a stellar season by making its first ever playoff appearance in the America East Tournament. A 1997 graduate of Iona College, Giovatto was a three-year varsity letter-winner for the Gaels, receiving a Bachelors degree in Mass Communications.  Upon graduation, Giovatto had the opportunity to play for the New York/New Jersey Metrostars (currently the New York Red Bulls) of Major League Soccer during the preseason.  The following year, he joined the Brooklyn Knights of the United Soccer League Premier Development League (USL PDL).  In 2000, Giovatto was invited to play for the Baltimore Blast of the National Premiere Soccer League (NPSL) during the preseason.  After his playing days came to a close, Coach Giovatto obtained a United States Soccer Federation License.  Giovatto and his wife, Lisa, have one daughter and reside in Brooklyn Heights.
