Head Coach
Amable Martinez enters his second season as the Terriers' women's volleyball Head Coach. In his first season at the helm, Martinez guided the Terriers to 14 overall wins, which included seven victories in NEC play. The 14 wins marked the Terriers' most since the 1999 season as they put together one of their best seasons in two decades. Under his tutelage, Kizzy Rodriguez was selected to the All-NEC Second Team and Wies Hurkmans was named the St. Francis Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He joined St. Francis after he served as the womens volleyball head coach at Saint Peters University for the past two seasons. In addition to being the head coach of the womens team at Saint Peters, Martinez spent time as a mens volleyball assistant coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology (2017-18). Martinez remains on the Stevens mens volleyball staff as a volunteer assistant coach for the 2019 campaign. While at the helm of Saint Peters, Martinez guided the Peacocks to an appearance in the 2018 MAAC Tournament. The Peacocks earned a first round victory over Marist College, which marked their first MAAC Tournament win since 2006. Saint Peters had its most successful season in a decade under Martinez in 2018 as it won its most games since 2008. Last season, Martinez had a pair of freshmen who earned multiple conference awards under his tutelage. Karen Ramiu was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year; she was also selected to the All-MAAC Second Team and MAAC All-Rookie Team. It was the first time since 2001 that a player at Saint Peters earned a MAAC major award. Alanis Alvarado also was named to the MAAC All-Rookie Team in 2018. In his first year at Saint Peters Martinez placed four student-athletes on the MAAC All-Academic team. This past season, he had seven student-athletes earn MAAC All-Academic Team honors. As a mens volleyball assistant coach at the Stevens Institute of Technology, hes helped the Ducks to a 71-12 overall record, which included two-straight trips to the NCAA Final Four over. During the spring of 2018, the No. 3 nationally ranked Ducks made a run to the National Championship game before falling in the title match to the top-ranked team in the country, Springfield College. In 2017, the Ducks advanced to the national semifinal round before falling to the eventual national champions. Martinez has coached seven All-Americans, seven All-UVC conference players, and five All-Empire 8 players while at Stevens. In addition, he coached Nick Sunderland who earned the Elite 90 Award for the 2018 Division III Mens Volleyball Championship. Before his arrivals at Saint Peters and Stevens, Martinez served as the head coach of the Bloomfield College womens volleyball team for six seasons. At Bloomfield, he recorded a total of 69 wins, including 20 or more victories in his final two seasons, and a .500 or better record in his last three seasons. The 2015 season was a historic one for Martinez at Bloomfield as he led the program to 24-6 overall mark. The 24 wins were the most in program history since joining NCAA Division II. He guided the Bears to a CACC Regular Season Championship title and an appearance in the CACC Tournament final. Before entering the collegiate ranks, Martinez was the head girls volleyball coach at Science Park High School in Newark, NJ from 2005-11. He became a decorated coach at the high school level, raising the program to unprecedented heights during his tenure. At the club level, Martinez founded the Lady Chargers Volleyball Academy in 2009, and currently acts as Club Director for the organization. From 2005-08, he served as an assistant coach for the Newark 15U Girls volleyball team. Additionally, he spent time as the head coach of the National Hudson Lady Warriors club from 2007-08. A 2002 graduate of Kean University with a degree in psychology, Martinez starred as a member of the Cougars baseball team from 1996-98 and spent a season as a student-assistant coach for the volleyball program in 2002. He continued his education at Saint Peters University, where he earned an Alternate Route Teaching Certificate in 2006, and an MA in education, administration, and supervision from the University in 2012.
