Jack Burgasser
Head Coach
Jack Burgasser has continuously raised the bar for the St. John Fisher men’s soccer program since being hired as head coach in January 2020. A three-time Empire 8 Coach of the Year honoree, Burgasser has led the Cardinals to at least the conference semifinals in each of his five seasons in charge of the program. The Cardinals won the conference in 2020 and 2024. The Cardinals had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2024, as they went 11-5-5 overall (8-1-2 Empire 8 regular season), won the Empire 8 Conference and made the program’s second-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Tournament. The Cardinals’ 11 wins marked their most under Burgasser and the third-most by a team in program history. They had the top seed for the E8 Championship Tournament and didn’t allow a goal during a run that included wins over Russell Sage College, SUNY Brockport and Elmira College, which beat Fisher in penalty kicks in the 2023 conference title game. The Cardinals, who had one of the best defenses in the nation, finished ninth in DIII in goals against average (0.565). The Cardinals had several players earn accolades for their performances in 2024, including goalkeeper Christian Burkhart, who set the Fisher single-season record and led all of Division III with 13 shutouts. He became the second player in program history and the first since 1964 to earn All-American honors, earning a second-team spot from the United Soccer Coaches Association (USC). He also earned First-Team USC All-Region honors and became the second player in program history to be named Empire 8 Goalkeeper of the Year. Additionally, Joey Avallone won E8 Offensive Player of the Year, and Burgasser was named the Empire 8 Doug May Coach of the Year. The Cardinals had four USC All-Region honorees (two first team), seven all-conference honorees (four first team) and three College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honorees. The Cardinals started the Burgasser era with an Empire 8 title in the COVID-altered 2020 season, which was played in spring 2021 due to the pandemic disrupting the fall schedule. The E8 named Justin Bonetto its Offensive Player of the Year, Jadon Schlierf Goalkeeper of the Year and Burgasser Coach of the Year. The Cardinals, who’ve won at least six games every season under Burgasser, played in the conference semifinals in 2021 and 2022 before returning to the championship game in 2023. They had the top seed for the 2022 championship tournament. Burgasser, who has deep ties to the Rochester area and Western New York, brought over a decade of experience coaching at an elite level to Fisher. He served as an assistant coach at the University of Rochester for six seasons. During his tenure, Rochester developed into one of the premier programs in Division III. The Yellowjackets qualified for the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship five times during Burgasser’s six seasons and advanced to the second round or further four times. Rochester posted a 14-4-3 record in 2017 en route to the team’s first appearance in the Elite 8 since 2009. The team followed up that historic campaign with the most successful season in program history after marching to the Final Four and finishing the campaign at 16-3-2. Rochester’s 16 wins tied a program record for the most wins in a single season. Burgasser was also involved with recruiting and developing 27 All-Conference honorees and two All-Americans. Before his time at U of R, Burgasser spent three seasons as an assistant at Hobart, where he helped lift the Statesmen to three winning seasons and an NCAA Championship berth. He spent two years as a graduate assistant at SUNY Brockport, where he helped coach the Golden Eagles to a State University of New York Athletic Conference title in 2009 and back-to-back NCAA qualifications. Burgasser has also coached youth soccer with the Empire Revolution Soccer Academy, working with boys U-16, U-17, and U-18 teams. He holds a U.S. Soccer Federation (USSF) "C" license and an NSCAA Goalkeeper Level II Diploma. A 2009 graduate from Brockport with a Bachelor’s degree in biology, Burgasser was a member of the Golden Eagles’ soccer team for four seasons and served as team captain. Marykate Edmunds
Head Coach
Marykate Edmunds, a 2014 St. John Fisher graduate, returned to her alma mater in July 2025 as the fifth head women’s lacrosse coach in university history. Edmunds arrived back in Pittsford after four highly successful seasons (2022-25) as SUNY Geneseo’s head coach. She played and coached at St. John Fisher under Linda Michele, who retired in May 2025 as the winningest head coach in Empire 8 Conference history and one of the most successful in NCAA history. Edmunds compiled a 56-20 (.737) record at SUNY Geneseo, leading the Knights to at least 12 wins in each of her four seasons in charge of the program. The Knights hit the ground running under Edmunds in 2022 with 15 victories (second most by a team in program history), a SUNYAC title game appearance and their first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2014. Their 19-2 win over Saint Joseph’s (Me.) in the first round marked the program’s third-ever win in the NCAA Tournament. Edmunds guided her team to even more success the following year, as the Knights again won 15 games, claimed the first SUNYAC title in program history with an 11-9 victory over SUNY Cortland and won an NCAA Tournament game for a second consecutive year, dominating SUNY Canton 22-4 in the first round. Edmunds and her staff earned the 2023 SUNYAC Coaching Staff of the Year award. The Knights went 14-4 and reached the SUNYAC championship game in 2024. In 2025, their first season in the Empire 8 Conference, they finished 12-7 overall (8-1 E8 regular season) and played in the E8 championship game against St. John Fisher. Under Edmunds, Geneseo had 24 All-SUNYAC selections (10 first team), 13 Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) All-Region selections (7 first team) and one IWLCA All-American (Hanna Marafioti, 2022 second team). The Knights had the 2022 SUNYAC Rookie of the Year (Maddie Brown), the 2022 SUNYAC Offensive Player of the Year (Marafioti) and the 2023 and 2024 SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Year (Tricia Curran). In their inaugural season in the Empire 8, the Knights had nine all-conference selections, including three first-team honorees, the second most in the conference behind St. John Fisher, which had 10 All-E8 players. Before her stop at Geneseo, Edmunds spent three seasons (2019-21) as SUNY Fredonia’s head coach and two seasons (2017-18) as an assistant at St. John Fisher. The Cardinals went 32-8, won two Empire 8 championships, appeared in the NCAA Tournament twice and had 12 All-E8 selections (five first team) with Edmudns on staff. Edmunds began her collegiate coaching career as an assistant at SUNY Poly in 2016, where she helped guide the Wildcats to their first-ever SUNYAC championship and NCAA Tournament berth. She served as the head coach of the New Hartford High School (NY) girls lacrosse team in 2015. As a Fisher player from 2011-14, Edmunds caused 73 turnovers over 74 games and earned second-team All-Empire 8 honors as a defender in 2012, 2013 and 2014. The Cardinals won the Empire 8 in each of those three seasons, kicking off a dominant streak of conference titles that reached 13 in May 2025. Edmunds earned her Bachelor of Arts in sport management at St. John Fisher and her Master of Arts in athletic administration at Concordia University-Irvine in Irvine, California. Ed Raby Jr.
Head Coach
Ed Raby Jr.’s first season as St. John Fisher University’s head football coach delivered marked improvement and a palpable sense of rejuvenation to a program that had slipped from its once-consistent winning ways. The Cardinals authored one of the top turnaround stories in Division III in 2025, finishing 7-4 overall with a 5-2 mark in Empire 8 Conference play for their first winning season since 2016. Fisher, which went 3-7 in 2024, ended the regular season as one of 11 teams in the country with a plus-four jump in victories from the previous year. Raby’s team vanquished two of the program’s other nine-year droughts in beating SUNY Brockport in the Courage Bowl – 31-24 in an overtime thriller at Growney Stadium – and qualifying for a postseason game. The Cardinals hosted Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the ECAC Clayton Chapman Bowl to conclude the season. The Cardinals took steps forward in all phases in Raby’s first season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Fisher’s defense went from allowing nearly 30 points and 370 yards per game in 2024 to 20.09 points and 339 yards per game in 2025. St. John Fisher finished the year with 10 All-Empire 8 selections and three D3football.com Team of the Week honorees – safety Timothy VanderBrink and linebackers Kyle DaMore and Jack Tanoory. Fisher hadn’t had three different players earn weekly recognition from D3football.com in a season since 2014. Raby became the eighth head football coach in St. John Fisher history in February 2025 after eight years at SUNY Morrisville. He spent four years as SUNY Morrisville’s head coach – the first two as the interim – and led the Mustangs to a pair of ECAC Bowl appearances. He joined the Morrisville staff in 2017 as defensive coordinator and safeties coach under the leadership of head coach Curt Fitzpatrick, a 2004 St. John Fisher graduate who won a Division III national title at SUNY Cortland in 2023. Following Fitzpatrick’s departure for Cortland in February 2020, Morrisville named Raby its interim head coach. The Mustangs went 2-8 overall (1-5 Empire 8) in 2021, the first season after the COVID-19 pandemic wiped out the 2020 season, before improving significantly in 2022. They finished 7-4 (3-3 Empire 8) and reached the ECAC Robert M. Scotty Whitelaw Bowl. Morrisville had its best season under Raby in 2024, going 7-4 overall (5-2 Empire 8) and beating Stevenson University 21-18 in the Robert M. Scotty Whitelaw Bowl. The Mustangs’ five conference wins marked the program’s most E8 victories in a single season. The Mustangs consistently boasted stingy defenses under Raby’s direction. In 2022, the Mustangs allowed just 11 points per game, the fewest in the Empire 8, and 290.6 yards per game, the third-fewest in the conference. They ranked third in scoring defense (18 points per game) and total defense (310.7 yards per game) this past season. As head coach of the Mustangs, Raby produced 48 All-Empire 8 selections, including eight first-teamers. Linebacker Ernesto Mitchell earned Empire 8 Co-Defensive Player of the Year honors and became the first Morrisville player to be named an All-American by D3Football.com in 2022. Raby arrived at Morrisville after three years at Allegheny College, where he served as the defensive line coach for two seasons and the linebackers coach for one. He coached tight ends and defensive linemen at Alfred University in 2014. Raby, who was a defensive lineman, played collegiately at Division III Alma College for four years (2009-12). He earned his master’s degree in business administration from Alfred University in 2014. Paul Vosburgh
Head Coach
Vosburgh, who became Fisher's head coach in 1991, has guided the Cardinals into elite company in recent years. Over the last 10 years, Fisher has won 91 games, while advancing to the postseason in each of the last twelve years. In 2006, the Cardinals won the NCAA Division III East Region and advanced to the national semifinals, while in 2013 and 2007, Fisher bowed out in the national quarterfinals. Fisher improved to 6-1 all-time in ECAC Bowl games after defeating Western Connecticut State 28-14 in 2014. 2011 marked another trip to the NCAA Championship for Fisher, as the Cardinals defeated Johns Hopkins and Delaware Valley before falling to St. Thomas in the quarterfinals. Following a 63-7 win over Castleton State in the ECAC Northwest Championship game in 2012, Fisher made its way back to the NCAA Championship in 2013 knocking off John Carroll University and Hobart College before falling to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in the quarterfinals. Vosburgh led Fisher to a share of the Empire 8 title in 2014 for the fifth time in program history. The Cardinals finished the year 9-2, tying the record for fewest losses in a season. In the 2009 season, Vosburgh enhanced his tenure with Fisher as he reached the 100-win plateau with the Cardinals 56-13 win over Hartwick. Under Vosburgh, Fisher has won the coveted Lambert Meadowlands Award twice (2006, 2013), recognizing the top Division III team in the East. While Vosburgh is now reaping the benefits of his hard work, he knew it would take some time to get Fisher and its football program to this point. Vosburgh took over at Fisher, a Division III program in its infancy, in 1991, one week before the start of training camp. The Cardinals failed to win a game that year, including four-straight games without a touchdown to start the season. We knew it would be nearly impossible to win right away, but we realized it takes time to build a winning tradition, says Vosburgh. Back then it wasnt always easy to see the positives, and sometimes there werent a whole lot of them, but our coaching staff always kept our eyes fixed on the light at the end of the tunnel. Its been a rags-to-riches story for Vosburgh, however, in recent years. With state-of-the-art facilities to work with (Fisher has hosted the Buffalo Bills Summer Training Camp each year since 2000), Vosburgh, Fishers winningest coach, has established the Cardinals as a legitimate national contender. We feel as though weve been able to recruit better student-athletes over the last few years because of what St. John Fisher College has to offer, both academically and athletically, says Vosburgh, a two-time Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year and the 2006 National Coach of the Year. Weve definitely raised the bar over the last few years and have set some pretty high goals, but we think with the players and the coaches we have and everything St. John Fisher College has to offer, we can accomplish a lot. A Lockport native, Vosburgh attended DeSales Catholic High School in Niagara Falls where he was a three-time all-league linebacker, and continued his career at William Penn (Iowa), where he established himself as the Statesmens top defensive threat, earning Athlete of the Year honors in his senior season. After graduation, he continued his academic career at Pittsburg State in Kansas, where he earned his masters degree, while beginning his coaching career working with the Gorillas football program. He accepted a position as head coach and athletic director at DeSales Catholic where he began his high school playing days in 1978 and then returned to William Penn, where he was the defensive coordinator for two seasons and head coach for his final three seasons. After three seasons as defensive coordinator at Division II Emporia State College, he returned to New York and accepted his current position as the seventh head coach in St. John Fisher College football history. When hes not watching football film in the off-season, Vosburgh can often be found biking on the Erie Canal or running. Paul lives in Pittsford with his wife, Kathleen. They have four children: Christan, Mary, Julia, and David.
