Jeremy Karger-Gatzow

Head Coach

Karger-Gatzow was named the MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Men's Coach of the Year following his first season as head track and field coach at SJU in 2016. The Johnnies finished second at both the indoor and outdoor conference meets and saw Ryan Bugler '17 win SJU's fifth individual national championship outdoors in the steeplechase in May.  He replaced Tim Miles, who announced his retirement as head track and field coach following the 2015 season after 36 seasons at SJU. Karger-Gatzow completed his 11th season as head track and field coach, for both the men and womens programs, at the University of Minnesota-Morris in 2015. He also served as head coach of the womens cross country team since 2004 and founded the mens cross country program in 2007. A 2000 graduate of Hamline, Karger-Gatzow was a four-year sprinter on the Pipers track and field team. He was a seven-time Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) coach of the year at Minnesota-Morris and sent 13 student-athletes to the national meet during his tenure, in which six earned NCAA Division III All-America honors. Over 200 Cougars received Academic All-UMAC honors and over 250 earned All-UMAC distinction. Karger-Gatzow built Morris co-ed track and field roster from 12 in his first season to over 50 in 2015. In addition to coaching duties, Karger-Gatzow taught various courses in the sport studies and athletic departments. Karger-Gatzow served as an assistant track and field coach at Bryant University in Rhode Island for two seasons from 2000-02 before leaving to enroll in graduate school at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He was a teaching assistant in various anatomy and kinesiology courses there and completed his masters degree in movement sciences in 2005. A native of Glenwood, Minn., Karger-Gatzow was a 1996 graduate of Minnewaska Area High School. He and his wife, Erica, have two children.

Joe Vardas

Assistant Coach

Vardas begins his 11th season as assistant coach with the Saint John's University track and field team in 2008-09.  He graduated from St. Cloud State University (SCSU) in 1994, where he competed in the jumps and sprints.  Vardas completed his master's degree in exercise physiology from SCSU in 1997.  His scientific background and thorough understanding of technique make him an outstanding jumps, sprints and javelin coach.  Vardas is a level II USA Track and Field certified coach in the jumps and is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). Vardas has coached athletes to school records in the long jump, triple jump, javelin, 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relays during his tenure.  Saint John's has produced seven All-Americans in the long and triple jumps since his arrival and one of his protégés, Tom Engwall, qualified for the 2004 Olympic Trials in the javelin. Joe and his wife, Shannon, live in nearby St. Cloud.

Damien Dumonceaux

Assistant Coach

Dumonceaux is in his 11th season on the defensive coaching staff in 2015 after serving as a three-year starter at nose tackle from 2003-05. A 2005 All-American, Dumonceaux received a pair of national awards, 's Defensive Lineman of the Year and D3football.com's Defensive Player of the Year, and received the MIAC Mike Stam Award as the conference's top lineman. Dumonceaux and his wife, Patricia, have a son, Fischer, and live in St. Joseph. -

Tim Miles

Coach

Miles, who also serves the track and field program as an assistant coach.  Miles graduated from Saint John's in 1976 and received his master's degree in forestry from the University of Minnesota in 1979. Miles' cross country program has finished among the MIAC's top two squads in 24 of the past 38 seasons, including nine MIAC titles (1981, 1982, 1983, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2006 and 2007). He has had 22 cross country teams qualify for the national meet, with 17 recording top-15 finishes. As an athlete at Saint John's, Miles was an All-MIAC performer in cross country and the MIAC six-mile run champion and steeplechase runner-up on the track as a senior in 1976. Miles returned to Saint John's in 1979 as head coach of the cross country and track and field programs. He produced a winning track and field program that finished among the MIAC's top two squads in 23 of the 36 seasons from 1980-2015, including MIAC championships in 1997, 1999, 2005, 2007 and 2011. Miles won MIAC Coach of the Year honors in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2011. At the national level, Miles' athletes put together 61 Division III All-America performances. Miles is a resident of nearby St. Joseph.
