Lucas Kleinschrodt

Recruiting Territories: Twin Cities North Metro and Central Minnesota, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, Hawaii.   Lucas Kleinschrodt is in his fifth season as a member of the St. Olaf football coaching staff in 2025-26 and currently serves as the defensive coordinator.   Kleinschrodt joined the coaching staff in the spring of 2021 as the inside linebackers coach and coached Brandon Foster to Honorable Mention All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honors after Foster led the conference in tackles during the 2021 season. In 2022, Kleinschrodt was promoted to defensive coordinator and helped coach three players to All-MIAC honors, including first-team honoree and D3football.com all-region selection Mark Thrower. In 2023, two members of his defense earned conference-wide recognition, with Deonta Thomas collecting All-MIAC honors and Luke Stanga landing on the honorable-mention list. Most recently, three members of Kleinschrodt's defense earned postseason accolades in 2024, led by All-MIAC and D3football.com All-Region 6 defensive end Noah Barrett.   Prior to arriving at St. Olaf, Kleinschrodt served as the defensive backs coach in 2016 at Gustavus Adolphus College before being promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2017 and then defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2018. During his time at Gustavus, Kleinschrodt coached 14 players to All-MIAC honors. After becoming co-defensive coordinator in 2017,  the Gustavus defense improved in points per game from 28 to 20.6, total yards from 363.1 to 320.2, rushing yards from 143 to 126.3, passing yards from 220.1 to 193.9, third-down defense from 56 percent to 70 percent, fourth-down defense from 42 percent to 67 percent, and sacks from 9 to 24. In 2018, the Gustavus defense improved again in points per game from 20.6 to 18.9, total yards from 320.2 to 291.4, passing yards per game from 193.9 to 150.3 (1st in MIAC), and interceptions from 7 to 12. The Gusties finished the 2019 season with a 7-3 record, tying the program's best record since 2001.   Prior to arriving at Gustavus, Kleinschrodt spent the 2016 spring at South Dakota State University as a defensive quality control coach.   In 2014, Kleinschrodt got his start in coaching at Augustana University (S.D.), serving as a defensive graduate assistant working with the defensive backs. In 2015, Kleinschrodt was promoted to corner backs coach and director of on-campus recruiting, helping Augustana to a 9-3 record, a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) South title, and an NCAA playoff berth.   A native of Alden, Minnesota, Kleinschrodt graduated from Alden-Conger High School in 2010. From there, Lucas attended Gustavus where he graduated in 2014 with an undergraduate degree in health fitness and earned a masters’ degree in sports administration and leadership from Augustana Univeristy in 2016. Kleinschrodt was a four-year letterwinner for the Gusties as a linebacker. He recorded 146 tackles in 38 career games at Gustavus, ranking fifth on his team with a career-high 42 tackles his senior season in 2013. Matthew Paulson

Assistant Coach

Matthew Paulson is in his sixth season as a member of the St. Olaf football coaching staff in 2025-26 and currently serves as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Paulson directed the third most-potent offense in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) in 2024, as St. Olaf averaged 30.8 points and 387.4 yards per game. Five members of the Oles' offense earned postseason accolades, highlighted by tight end Derek Hansen '25, who was named a D3football.com Second Team All-American. Hansen was also a D3football.com First Team All-Region 6 and was joined on the All-MIAC team by junior offensive lineman Johnathan Hartwig. In 2023, St. Olaf put together one of the top statistical offensive seasons in program history, ranking tied for second in completions (213), third in passing yards (2,853), completion percentage (62.8%), passing yards per game (285.3), total offense (4,500), and total offense per game (450.0), fourth in pass efficiency (150.2), total offense per play (6.34), and points scored (345), sixth in passing touchdowns (22), tied for ninth in rushing touchdowns (23), and 10th in yards per carry (4.44). The Oles ranked second in the MIAC in total offense per game and rushing yards per game (164.7), while ranking fourth in points per game (34.5) and passing yards per game. Nationally, St. Olaf had the second-best fourth-down conversion percentage (80.0%, 24-for-30) in NCAA Division III while ranking 10th in red-zone offense (.889), 22nd in fewest sacks allowed (0.90 per game), 30th in total offense, and 33rd in passing offense. Paulson joined the coaching staff in the spring of 2020 as the tight ends coach and coached a group that posted over 500 receiving yards and eight touchdowns, while producing a Second Team All-MIAC honoree in Isaac Coutier '22. He spent the 2022 season as the program's video coordinator and offensive line coach before moving to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach ahead of the 2023 season. Prior to coming to St. Olaf, Paulson spent the 2019 season at the University of Minnesota as an offensive quality control assistant coach. He was part of a team that finished the season 11-2 with an Outback Bowl victory over Auburn. Minnesota finished the season as the No. 10-ranked team in the country, while averaging 34.1 points and 432 yards per game. From 2017-18, Paulson served as the wide receivers coach at Springfield College (Mass.). During that span, Springfield had a combined 18-4 record, including the 2017 team that finished 10-1 and appeared in the NCAA Division III Playoffs, while leading the country in rushing at over 435 yards per game. Paulson graduated from the University of Northwestern-St. Paul with a bachelor's degree in kinesiology in 2015 and earned a master's degree in athletic administration from Springfield in 2018. Mitchell Kleinschrodt

Assistant Coach

Mitchell Kleinschrodt is in his third season as the special teams coordinator and defensive backs coach at St. Olaf in 2024-25.   In 2023, Kleinschrodt coached defensive back Deonta Thomas to All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honors, while senior kicker/punter Collin Swan was an Honorable Mention All-MIAC honoree. St. Olaf's kickoff coverage unit ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III by holding opponents to 14.70 yards per return. Kleinschrodt came to St. Olaf after coaching one season at Gustavus Adolphus College. There, he worked with the wide receivers and was also in charge of the punt and kick return special teams units. He coached two all-conference wide receivers, along with one all-conference special teams returner.  At Gustavus, the kick return team was ranked first in the MIAC and 10th nationally in averaging 24.18 yards per return with one return for a touchdown. Prior to coaching at Gustavus, Kleinschrodt spent three seasons as the head football coach at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa. Kleinschrodt inherited a 1-10 program and went 5-24 in three seasons, including a COVID-shortened spring season. During his time at Ellsworth Community College, he was able to help develop 10 Academic All-Americans and 4 NJCAA All-Americans. From 2019-2021, the Panthers were the second most-improved pass offense in the entire country, along with being the third most-improved total offense in the country. In 2021, Ellsworth’s defense also had the No. 2-ranked pass defense in the country. Through the program's development, there were 45 transfers that went from ECC to four-year schools, 24 of them transferring to an NCAA Division I school. In addition, Kleinschrodt also served as the offensive coordinator and over his tenure coached the quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers and offensive line. He was also in charge of the punt and kick return units, along with FG/PAT. Kleinschrodt arrived at Ellsworth after spending 2018 as the director of recruiting at the University of New Mexico. At New Mexico, he also served as the NFL liaison and travel liaison. Kleinschrodt assisted in the recruiting of 2023 fourth-round NFL draft pick Dylan Horton and 2023 sixth-round NFL draft pick Jerrick Reed II. Prior to his off the field role at the University of New Mexico, he was the offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. Kleinschrodt assisted the team in achieving a 6-5 record. There he coached four all-conference selections; offensive lineman Quintin Taylor, running back Ryan Parmely, wide receiver Jarred Edmonds, and quarterback Brent Lammers, who also led the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) in total offense. Kleinschrodt served as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico in 2015 and 2016, helping guide the team to bowl games in both seasons. Over his time there, he worked with the wide receivers, running backs, offensive line and also assisted in recruiting. He helped guide the Lobos to bowl games The Lobos won the New Mexico Bowl and a share of the Mountain Division title in 2016 while also leading the entire country in rushing with 350 yards per game. Prior to his time in New Mexico, Kleinschrodt spent the 2014 season at Highland Community College in Kansas as the running backs and wide receivers coach, recruiting coordinator, and video coordinator. Before that, he served as a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State University in his home state of Minnesota. In 2012-13, he assisted with coaching the running backs and defensive backs and was video coordinator for the Huskies. During his time at St. Cloud State, the Huskies finished 7-4 in 2012 and 12-2 in 2013; the 2013 squad advanced to the NCAA Division II playoff quarterfinals. Kleinschrodt, a native of Alden, Minnesota, graduated in 2008 from Alden-Conger High School. He went on to play at Gustavus Adolphus, where he saw action on both sides of the ball, playing quarterback and wide receiver, and later as a defensive back, starting his senior season. Eric Pulley

Recruiting Territories: Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, DMV Eric Pulley is in his eighth season as the running backs coach for the St. Olaf football program in 2025-26. During his time on the Hill, St. Olaf has produced five All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) selections at running back, landing an honoree at the position in every season from 2018-23 (2020 season canceled). In 2023, Jordan Embry earned his third consecutive First Team All-MIAC accolade and his second consecutive D3football.com First Team All-Region 6 honor. Embry led the MIAC in carries (245), rushing yards (1,167), rushing yards per game (129.7), and rushing touchdowns (12), while ranking 10th in the country in rushing yards per game and 18th in rushing yards. He closed out his career as the program's all-time leader in carries (769) while ranking second in rushing yards (3,693), second in rushing yards per game (97.2), third in rushing touchdowns (31), third in touchdowns scored (32), fourth in points scored (192), seventh in all-purpose yards (3,985), seventh in all-purpose yards per game (104.8), 10th in total offense (3,896), and 10th in yards per carry (4.80). In 2024, junior Gus Gartzke was an Honorable Mention All-MIAC honoree after ranking fourth among MIAC running backs in rushing yards (542), tied for fourth in carries (132), and tied fourth in rushing touchdowns (7). Prior to coming to St. Olaf, Pulley was a passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach at Burnsville High School in 2017.  From 2014-16, he was an assistant coach at Chaska High School and spent two years at the University of St. Thomas from 2009-11 as the running backs coach. In 2008, Pulley was the offensive coordinator for Burnsville High School. He served as the running backs coach for Macalester College from 2006-07. Pulley received his Associate of Arts degree in business administration in 2008 from Colorado Technical University. He currently resides in Burnsville with his wife, Jennifer. They have two adult children, Josiah and Jada.

Billy Raible

Assistant Coach

Billy Raible is in his third season as a member of the St. Olaf football coaching staff in 2025-26 and serves as the tight ends coach.  In his two seasons coaching the tight ends, Raible coached Derek Hansen '25 to All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) honors in both seasons. Hansen concluded his career by earning D3football.com Second Team All-America and D3football.com First Team All-Region 6 honors in his senior campaign. Prior to coming to St. Olaf, Raible spent two seasons at Briar Cliff University in Sioux City, Iowa, serving as the running backs and tight ends coach. While there, Raible coached an all-conference sophomore running back who was ranked in the top 10 in career rushing yards at Briar Cliff.  Raible graduated from Saint John’s University in 2021 with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology and earned a master’s degree in management from Briar Cliff in 2023. Tony Barnack

Assistant Coach

Tony Barnack is in the first season of his second stint (eighth season overall) as a member of the St. Olaf football coaching staff in 2025-26 and works primarily with the wide receivers. Barnack returned to the Hill in 2025, bringing over 30 years of coaching experience at both the high school and collegiate levels. He previously served on the Ole football staff from 2009-15, coaching kickers, punters, long snappers, tight ends and wide receivers under head coaches Jerry Olszewski and Craig Stern. Prior to his return, Barnack spent nine seasons as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Tri-City United High School. Before joining St. Olaf in 2009, he was the head coach at Montgomery-Lonsdale and Glenville-Emmons, also working extensively with offensive and defensive lines early in his career. In addition to his coaching duties, Barnack teaches visual arts at Tri-City United High School in Montgomery, Minnesota. Originally from Alexandria, Minnesota, Barnack is a graduate of Minnesota State University, Mankato (formerly Mankato State University), where he earned his B.S. in Art Education. He and his wife, ReBecca, reside in Lonsdale and are proud parents of three adult sons: Ben, Sam, and Dan. Jon Chhay

Assistant Coach

Jon Chhay is in his first season as an assistant coach for the St .Olaf football program in 2025-26 and primarily works with the cornerbacks. Chhay joined James Kilian's staff with over 17 years of coaching experience across the high school, and collegiate levels. Known for his energy, attention to detail, and ability to develop players on and off the field, Chhay arrives at St. Olaf after building a reputation as one of Florida’s most innovative offensive minds at the high school level. Before returning to Minnesota, Chhay served as the offensive coordinator at Bartow High School (Fla.), where he helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a Florida Class 6A playoff berth in 2024. Under his direction, the offense averaged nearly 300 yards per game and produced the most improved unit in Polk County. He developed record-setting quarterback Blake Johnson, who threw for 2,210 yards and 24 touchdowns while leading the team to a 6-5 finish. Prior to Bartow, Chhay spent two seasons as the offensive coordinator at St. Pete High School (Fla.). There, he helped engineer a dramatic turnaround for a program that had gone 2-18 in the two years before his arrival. St. Pete posted back-to-back winning seasons and playoff appearances under Chhay’s leadership, while increasing scoring output from 27.8 PPG in 2022 to 34.7 PPG in 2023. The team won a district championship in 2023—their first in 13 years. He mentored dual-threat quarterback Jeffrey Jones, who amassed over 5,100 total yards and accounted for 58 touchdowns in two seasons, earning PCAC League MVP and back-to-back “Player of the Year” honors. Chhay was twice selected to coach in the Pinellas County All-Star Game, serving as offensive coordinator in 2022 - resulting in the team’s first win in 16 years - and defensive line coach in 2023. At the junior college level, Chhay spent two years at Ellsworth Community College (Iowa) where he coached both the offensive line and wide receivers, and also served as special teams and video coordinator. During his tenure, the Panthers became one of the most improved offenses in the NJCAA, finishing second nationally in passing offense improvement and third in total offense. Chhay’s coaching foundation was built in Minnesota, where he spent over a decade as a high school assistant at programs including Mounds View, Irondale, and Robbinsdale Cooper. At Mounds View, he helped guide the team to a section title and state tournament appearance in 2019 and was instrumental in developing QB Cole Stenstrom, who threw for over 4,000 yards and signed with the University of South Dakota. In addition to football, Chhay has coached multiple other sports, including baseball, basketball, and wrestling. He was part of a Minnesota high school baseball program that won three state championships and produced 14 Division I athletes, including MLB pitcher Sam Hentges (Cleveland Guardians). A Hopkins, Minnesota native, Chhay was a team captain and two-way starter at Hopkins High School before playing college football at the University of St. Thomas.
