Matt Righter

Head Coach

Matt Righter enters his third year as the Head Baseball Coach at Stevenson University, where the Mustang baseball team continues to make strong strides forward. Now in year three, the team is seeing the benefits of outstanding recruiting efforts, including the addition of 14 talented freshmen who have brought depth, energy, and competition to the roster. Righter concluded his first two seasons at the helm after joining Stevenson from Vassar College, where he served as head coach from 2016–2023. During his tenure at Vassar, Righter built the Brewers into a consistent contender. His 2023 team set a program record with 20 wins and ranked among the national Division III leaders in batting average (.337), on-base percentage (.895), and stolen bases (85). Under his guidance, the Brewers made the Liberty League post season three times. His teams produced 114 All-Liberty League Academic honorees, 22 all-conference selections, and three All-Region picks. Prior to his time in Poughkeepsie, Righter was the head coach at SUNY–New Paltz from 2013–2016, where he led the Hawks to a 20-win season in 2016, nearly tripling the team’s win total from the year before; and secured the program’s first-ever conference series win over the #1 nationally ranked Cortland State. A two-sport all-conference athlete in baseball and basketball at Johns Hopkins University, Righter was selected in the 21st round of the MLB Draft by the Detroit Tigers and went on to pitch professionally for six years, reaching Triple-A with the Toledo Mud Hens. Righter is no stranger to the Baltimore area. He previously served as an assistant coach in both baseball and men’s basketball at Johns Hopkins, where he helped the baseball program to four Centennial Conference championships and a College World Series appearance in 2010. Three of his pitchers went on to play professionally. A 2004 Johns Hopkins graduate with a degree in International Relations, Righter continues to build the Stevenson program around a foundation of player development, strong culture, and character.   Updated 11/25/25

Coach Lassiter works primarily with the infielders and assists Coach Righter with the hitters. According to Coach Righter, “Ryan was one of our most clutch hitters here at Stevenson! He’s extremely loyal, competitive, and knowledgeable about the game. He’s a tremendous addition to our staff, and I feel lucky to have him helping our guys get better every day.”
