Hottle The first head coach in program history, Ed Hottle enters his sixth season at Stevenson in 2016. In just five years, Hottle has built the Mustangs into a contender on a regional and national level.  The 2015 season saw Stevenson finish 9-2 overall and tied for second in the Middle Atlantic Conference with a 7-2 mark.  The Mustangs defeated Muhlenberg 14-9 in the inagural Centennial-MAC Bowl Series and were received votes in both national polls (D3football.com and AFCA) as well as earning an NCAA regional ranking.  The squad ranked among the nation's defensive leaders, leading Division III in turnovers forced with 40 as well as turnover margin per game. Hottle has had 29 players named All-Middle Atlantic Conference, including a program best 10 in 2014 and 2015 and the 2012 Rookie of the Year. Off the field, four players have been named to the MAC Academic All-Conference Team and two have received the Herb Armstrong Service to Football Award from the Baltimore Chapter of the National Football Foundation.  In 2014, two players were named to the D3football.com All-East Region Third Team while also being named to the ECAC South All-Star Second Team. In 2014, Hottle led the Mustangs to a school record eight wins, matching their wins totals from the previous three years combined. Stevenson also claimed the ECAC Southeast Bowl Championship at Mustang Stadium in their first postseason appearance. The Mustangs, who started the season 4-0, posted their first-ever shutout, following it with a second shutout and a school record 57 points in their first-ever homecoming win. On April 9, 2015, Hottle was honored with a Patriot Award by the Maryland Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) in recognition of extraordinary support of his employee serving in the Maryland Guard and Reserve. Hottle led the Mustangs to four wins in 2013, including three in the MAC. Stevenson started the season 3-0 and led the conference in passing defense while ranking fourth in sacks and interceptions. In 2012, the Mustangs finished third in the MAC in rushing offense while boasting the MAC Rookie of the Year and setting a school record in rushing yards. Hottle led Stevenson to the first win in school history on Sept. 10, 2011 with a 46-43 double overtime victory over Christopher Newport in front of a sellout crowd of 3,500 fans at Mustang Stadium. He later led the Mustangs to their first-ever win in the Middle Atlantic Conference with a 36-13 victory at FDU-Florham on Oct. 30, 2011 in the "Snow Game." Before Stevenson officially took the field in 2011, Hottle led the team through a developmental season in 2010. Prior to Stevenson, Hottle served as the head football coach and assistant athletics director at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. While there, he amassed a 27-20 record in five seasons from 2005-09 and led the Bison back to NCAA Division III status in 2007. In 2009, Hottle was selected by his peers as the Eastern Collegiate Football Conference (ECFC) Coach of the Year after leading Gallaudet to a 6-4 record and a second-place finish. The Bison also ranked 10th in the nation in total defense and ninth in rushing offense. In 2007, Hottle led Gallaudet back into NCAA Division III status as the team posted a 4-6 record with their toughest schedule in over 15 years. Gallaudet defeated two Division III teams, the first time the Bison won a game as a Division III school since 1991. Like Stevenson, Hottle also led Gallaudet through a developmental season in 2005 where the Bison posted a 9-0 record. With Hottle at the helm, Gallaudet was featured in various national television media outlets including ESPN, The Washington Post and others. He also served as a consultant to ESPN's Sal Palantonio on his book How Football Explains America. A 1999 graduate of Frostburg State, Hottle earned his bachelor's in physical education in before receiving his master's in education in 2001. While at FSU, he began as a football intern with the Bobcats and then spent two seasons as the defensive line coach in 1999 and 2000. In 2001, Hottle worked as the defensive coordinator and head strength and conditioning coach at Denison before serving as the linebackers and defensive line coach at Wesley from 2002-04 under head coach Mike Drass. Hottle served as the head coach at Calvert High School in Prince Frederick before leaving for Gallaudet. Hottle and his wife, Ashley, reside in Finksburg and have four children, a daughter, Madalynn, and three sons, Wyatt, Cole and Tucker.
