Gary LaPietra
Head Coach
LaPietra has returned The College at Brockport to the national spotlight since being hired prior to the 1996 season. The Rochester area soccer veteran has concentrated on recruiting the top local athletes and at the same time has attracted players from Long Island, Syracuse, Albany, Buffalo and the Southern Tier as he continues to put together a quality mix of soccer talent to represent the Green and Gold. In 18 seasons at Brockport, LaPietras overall record is 185-109-33 for a .616 win percentage. The 185 victories are the most ever by a Brockport men's soccer coach. LaPietra became the school's all-time winningest coach on October 15, 2012 against Oswego in a 2-0 victory. LaPietra passed A. Huntley Parker (161 wins), the school's soccer stadium namesake. During the 2013 season, the Golden Eagles opened up with four straight wins and remained undefeated until the 12th game of the season. Brockport topped the national polls at No. 6 and were ranked No. 1 in the region. Under LaPietras guidance, senior standout Bobby Ross earned his third-straight All-SUNYAC first-team selection. LaPietra has now had 16 straight seasons with at least one member of his team making the first-team ballot. Ross was also selected to the First-Team All-Region and named to the ECAC All-Star team for the Upstate New York Region. Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Sullivan had a strong year, earning SUNYAC Player of the Week three times and being named Disney/NSCAA Player of the Week. Sullivan also earned second-team All-SUNYAC. The Golden Eagles landed five players on the All-SUNYAC teams, making it the tenth straight year that Brockport has placed at least four players on an all-conference team. The Golden Eagles have become a fixture in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament since LaPietra took over the reins of the program. Brockport qualified for the conference tournament 10 consecutive years from 2002-2011 and returned in 2013. Brockport won the 2009 championship in a shootout over Plattsburgh, the first title since 1978. LaPietra led the Golden Eagles to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance in the 2011 season. Brockport made it to the second round for the third straight year as they beat Manhattanville College in the first round and fell to Stevens Tech. in the second round. The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 13-4-2 record. LaPietra led Brockport to their fourth consecutive SUNYAC Championship as well, falling to the top overall seed Oneonta. Brockport, the no. 2 seed in the tournament, fell in the championship 1-0. Senior Brian Duffy was named the 2011 recipient of the Fred Holloway Award, given to the player on the SUNYAC All-Conference team with the highest GPA, along with the SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence. During the 2010 season, the Golden Eagles went 14-3-3 and climbed to as high as 13th in the national Division III soccer polls. Brockport advanced into the SUNYAC title game, and the Golden Eagles earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III national tournament. Brockport rallied to defeat NYU 3-2 in overtime of a first-round game. The Golden Eagles eventually fell to Merchant Marine Academy 3-2 in overtime in the second round of the NCAA's. In 2009, LaPietra was voted the SUNYAC Coach of the Year for the second time in his career, previously earning the honor in 2002 when Brockport won a regular-season conference title with a perfect 9-0 record. Brockport has averaged more than 10 wins per season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament three straight seasons from 209-11. Brockport made an appearance in 2009 that included a shootout victory in an opening-round against Ohio Northern. The Golden Eagles have made 14 trips to the NCAA Tournament and won the National Championship in 1974. Brockport advanced to the championship game in the tournament two other years in 1975 and 1976. Under LaPietra, Golden Eagle soccer players have been named to the NSCAA/Adidas All-Region team 26 times, 70 players have been voted to the All-SUNYAC squads, and three have been named the SUNYAC First Year Player of the Year. In 2010, LaPietra coached his second All-American in as many years, as Joe Marino joined Steve Abgarian (2009) as third-team All-American picks. Six of the nine major offensive records at Brockport have been set under the guidance of LaPietra. Steve Abgarian tied three-time All-Region selection Anthony Jaworskis record for goals in a game (5) and points in a game (10) in the first game of the season in 2009. Ten years later, Gary Michael was on hand to welcome the teams and players to the inaugural tournament and continues to be a big part of the Brockport soccer program.
