McCarthy took over the Fighting Tiger program in the fall of 2010 and promptly led the Cobleskill mens team to a surprising fourth place finish at the 2011 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). During his tenure the team has achieved unprecedented success individually and collectively on the course and in the classroom as evidenced by the overall team GPA improving from under a 2.0 in the spring of 2010 to currently over a 3.0. With McCarthy in charge the Orange & Black have captured 16 Tournament Championships and finished in the top half of the NEAC league standings every season highlighted by league runner-up finishes in 2014, which earned him NEAC Coach-of-theYear honors, and 2016 while establishing the program record for lowest competitive round since the establishment of golf as an intercollegiate sport in 1955 with a round of 299 in 2014. Under his direction Fighitng Tiger individuals under his tutledge have earned: 17 Cobleskill Men's All-NEAC Team honors including NEAC Champions/Players-of-the-Year Travis Deuel (2014) and Ian Wilson (2016) and NEAC Rookies-of-the-Year Ian Wilson (2014) and Wyatt Gorham (2015) additionally15 Cobleskill players having been named NEAC Golf-of-the-Week Award recipients. In 2014 Travis Deuel became the first Fighting Tiger player to be named to the All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Team followed in 2015 with Ian Wilson becoming the progam's first ECAC Men's Golfer-of-the-Month. During this time Deuel and Wilson also had the unique honors of setting program scoring records with Deuel posting a round of 3-under par 69 in 2014 and Wilson firing a round of 4-under par 68 in 2015. The pair have also posted hole-in-ones while under his direction. In the fall of 2011 he helped found the Fighting Tiger womens team was and promptly had a pair of team members qualifying to play at the 2011 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Fall Championships. Additionally freshman Emily Hamilton, Fairport, N.Y., Fairport High School, became the first women's golfer to capture an invitational title when she won the 2011 Fighting Tiger Invitational hosted by the Orange & Black at the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club in Cobleskill, N.Y. Subsequently Cobleskill female team members have won three additional invitational titles under his direction. From 2010 to the present Fighting Tiger women's team members have captured six individual tournament titles and had a three runners-up finishes. The Cobleskill mentor is involved in intercollegiate golf administration serving as the President of the NEAC Golf Coaches Committee as well as the NCAA Golf Representative for the Mid-Atlantic Region. No stranger to the links himself, McCarthy was a letterman in golf at Fort Edward High School in Fort Edward, N.Y. as part of an outstanding prep athletic career that saw him also earn acclaim in: basketball, cross country and track & field. Upon graduation from high school he attended Herkimer Community College in Herkimer, N.Y. where he earned his Associates Degree and was a two-time letterman in track & field. He then earned his Bachelors Degree from SUNY Oswego in Oswego, N.Y. while once lettering in cross country. Before taking over the golf program he spent 16 seasons as the Cobleskills Associate Head Mens Basketball Coach helping to guide the Fighting Tigers to: NJCAA Region III Championships in 1997, 2005 and 2008 as the Orange & Black advanced to the NJCAA Division III Final Four in 1997 and 2008 while advancing to the Elite Eight in 2005. Prior to arriving at SUNY Cobleskill he spent after six years coaching in the Midwest serving as the Head Mens & Womens Cross Country Coach/Assistant Mens Basketball Coach at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin for five seasons then moving to Rockford College in Rockford, Illinois as Assistant Mens Basketball Coach for the 1992-93 campaign. McCarthy was honored by the National Basketball Coaches Association with a Merit Award for distinguished service to the game at the 2001 NABC Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota and by Scholastic Coach Magazine as an AFLAC National Assistant Coach-of-the-Year in 2003. In September of 2003 he was also honored by the Basketball Coaches Association of New York (BCANY) receiving their Assistant Coaches Award. In 2005 he was once again honored by the BCANY receiving the groups Coaching Dedication Award. The new Fighting Tiger mentor has also coached on the national and international level serving as the Head Coach of Team USA Basketball entry in the Bob Cousy International Invitational Tournament held in Wooster Massachusetts in 1995. He later served as an assistant coach of the NJCAA Team USA in 2005 at the Rick Ball Junior College Showcase at the NCAA "Final Four" in St. Louis, Missouri. Professionally McCarthy serves as the campuss University United Professionals Chapter (UUP) as a State Assembly Delegate to the UUP General Assembly. He has additionally served as the chapters Past Vice President for Professionals. He currently serves the Cobleskill Department of Sport & Exercise as the Assistant Athletic Director.
