Tom Wilson

Head Coach

Wilson, a State University of New York at Fredonia alumnus, became the head coach of the track and field and cross country programs after nearly a decade long stint as the program's pole vault instructor in 2011.   Wilson has become a staple in the Western New York pole vault community helping to introduce the event to hundreds of athletes over the years through his pole vault clinics. Those he has coached hold both school records and account for 31 of the possible 40 athletes on the Fredonia mens and womens Top 10 performance lists and highlighting these 31 entrees is 2012 graduate Broncho Rollins. Wilson lead Rollins to both the indoor (163.25) and outdoor (164) school records and back-to-back All-American finishes at the 2012 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor championships.   Along with taking over the oversight of the entire program and maintaining his traditional pole vault duties, Wilson has also successfully taken on the training and mentorship of the student-athletes competing in the middle and long distances at Fredonia. In Wilsons first year at the helm, he helped guide Nick Guarino (11) to three NCAA national championships combined between the 1,500 and 800 meters outdoor, and the mile indoors. Wilson was named the 2011 SUNYAC Mens Head Coach of the Year after his men finished third at the Outdoor SUNYAC championships.  A competition in which Blue Devil student-athletes won six individual events in that competition.   Most recently, the 2014 cross country season has marked the best season of the past two decades for the men and women of Fredonia. On the womens side, senior Kim Foltz broke the 6,000-meter school record (22:30) on her way to earning All-Atlantic regional honors. The men finished third at the SUNYAC Cross Country championships and 10th overall in the Atlantic Region, while both programs remained in the NCAA Atlantic Regions Top 15 for a second straight year.   On the track, the womens program stole the show as Wilson and his staff lead them to a total of 10 new school records between the indoor and outdoor seasons, highlighted by sophomore and 2014 Outdoor national aualifier Anna Dambacher, who broke five of the 10 records in the Indoor 60-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash, and the outdoor 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. The other five records were set by senior Kim Foltz (indoor 800 meters), freshman Laura Morrison (outdoor 400 meters and 800 meters), Nicole Desens (discus throw), and sophomore Olivia Kurbs (outdoor pole vault). Wilson graduated from Fredonia with a double major in Computer Science and Graphic Design. During his time as an athlete Wilson was a SUNYAC conference scorer in the 800 meters and 4x400-meter relay, as well as the 2002 Outdoor SUNYAC champion in the pole vault. Wilson holds lifetime personal bests of 159 and 1:54 between the pole vault and 800-meter run.  He lives in Fredonia with his wife and alumna, Jen (Martin) Wilson, and their son, Donovan.
