Chris Schuler-Ghiorse

Head Coach

Schuler-Ghiorse enters her 20th season in 2016-17 as the head coach for both the men's and women's swimming and diving teams. During her tenure, she has built a program that consistently competes in the top-3 of the SUNYAC while achieving a high level of academic success.   Schuler-Ghiorses background in sport psychology has taught her that team dynamics and team culture is crucial for a programs longevity and success. Her fundamental philosophy as a coach is to develop more than a team, but to create a family. When an athlete feels committed, and dedicated to their team, their family, they will give much more to make a difference. Strong programs are made with a commitment to hard work, responsibility and the highest respect for each other. At last years championships, the mens conference standing was fifth while the women finished in fourth place. Schuler-Ghiorse has earned SUNYAC Coach of the Year three times, most recently in 2015 when the womens team finished second at the conference championships.  In 2012, she earned top honors for the first time on the mens side.   In 2006, Schuler-Ghiorse had her first SUNYAC champion in men's swimming when Peter Millspaugh '07 won the 200-yard backstroke.  In 2009, she had her first SUNYAC champion on the womens side when Michele Sano '10 won the 100-yard backstroke, as well as being the first women in the college's history to make an NCAA provisional qualifying time.   This past season, the women broke three individual school records, one relay record, finished in the top-8 in almost all of the events and brought home four SUNYAC 2 nd Team All-Conference athletes; Hannah Dari (400 IM and 1650 Free), Julia Llewellyn (100 and 200 Butterfly), Nicole DiFilippo (100 Breaststroke) and Taylor Waldrop (100 and 200 Back).   The men broke three individual school records and returned home with two SUNYAC conference champions; Lucas Santiago (400 IM) and Zeke Brynin (100 and 200 Breaststroke), as well as a SUNYAC 2 nd Team All-Conference performer in Conor Kelly for the 500 Freestyle. At the 2013 SUNYAC championships, Alex Miller 13 captured three conference championships titles as well as SUNYAC conference records and NCAA DIII B cut performances in the 100 Backstroke, 200 Backstroke and 400 IM. His performance earned him the Most Outstanding Male Swimmer of the Meet. Schuler-Ghiorse came to Oneonta after completing her master's degree in sport psychology in 1997 from Springfield (MA) College. While at Springfield she spent a season as an assistant coach at Elms College. She has proven experience in recruiting and coaching the Div. III student athlete from her stints at Elms and as an assistant at her Alma Mater, Clarkson University. A 1993 graduate of Clarkson, Schuler-Ghiorse was team captain and Most Valuable Swimmer for both the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons. She holds three school records at the University in the backstroke, the breaststroke and the freestyle and received the Outstanding Swimmer Award as a senior. Schuler-Ghiorse is the aquatics director at Oneonta and serves as an Instructor within the physical education program. Schuler-Ghiorse is certified by the American Red Cross in CPR and First Aid and as a Water Safety Instructor and Lifeguard Trainer. She also is a certified pool operator and ropes course facilitator for the challenge course at the SUNY Oneonta college camp She continues to participate in swimming and a pay it forward philosophy as this summer she completed her 6th open water swim in the Long Island Sound in an effort to help raise money for the Swim Across America making waves to fight cancer. Her and her team raised over $9,000 through their efforts. Her overall advice to her athletes is the following Never be afraid to try and fail, be ever so afraid of failing to try.
