Mike Howard
Assistant Coach
Howard has made a name for himself in collegiate wrestling. After an outstanding 1996 season, Howard was voted the ECWCs Coach of the Year for the first time in his career, an honor he would receive again in 2002. His wrestlers have been named the ECWCs Most Outstanding Wrestlers in 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2001. Most recently, Howard coached Blake Fisher, 2013 ECWC Champion and national qualifier and 2011 ECWC Rookie of the Year Michael Gentilcore. In his 27 years at the helm, the program has ranked in the top 25 of Division III in nine of the last 20 years. At the 2002 NCAA Division III Championships, Howard guided the Lakers to a ninth-place finish in the team standings with three All-Americans. During his tenure, Oswego State has finished in the top 20 at the national tournament on two other occasions, in 1996 and 2005. In 1996, Howard sent his largest contingent to the NCAA Championships after six of the Laker matmen qualified at the ECWC Championships. Two returned with All-America honors for their mantles while the team placed 20th overall in NCAA Division III. During his career, Howards teams have had 61 NCAA qualifiers, 17 NCAA Division III All-Americans, 19 individual conference champions and 89 New York State Collegiate Championship place winners. As a competitor, Howard wrestled for the Lakers for three years at the 167-pound weight class and was a two-time co-captain. At Oswego State, Howard's golf teams have also experienced a great deal of success. The Lakers played in the ECAC Championships in 1994. In 1995, Toby Draper became the first Laker to qualify for the NCAA Division III Championship since the early 1980s. Since Howard took over the program, the team has captured 22 invitational titles, including the Oswego State Fall Invitational in 2015 and the Elmira Spring Invite in 2016. As a competitor, Howard wrestled for the Lakers for three years at the 167-pound weight class and was a two-time co-captain. Howard resides in Oswego with his wife, Su-Ann and their children.
