Gary Glassman

Head Coach

Glassman led the women's team to their first America East championship in program history. The Seawolves knocked off 18-time defending champion Boston University in the semifinals before beating No. 2 UMBC in the final to advance to its first NCAA tournament in 2012. Glassman and his staff earned Coaching Staff of the Year honors and junior Nini Lagvilava was named America East Player of the Year. In addition, freshman Polina Movchan earned the conference's Rookie of the Year award and was selected as the Most Outstanding Player of the America East championships. A former member of the ITA regional ranking committee and chair of the NCAA Division I Tennis Committee in 2009, Glassman picked up his 350th career victory in the women's 6-1 victory over St. John's on April 10, 2011. In 2010-11, Glassman led a women's team that had lost two of its top six players from the previous year to its most wins (15) since 2005-06. The Seawolves also earned a spot in the America East semifinals, where they nearly knocked off defending champion Boston University. In the 2005-2006 season, Glassman's men's squad won the America East tournament over Binghamton, earning an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament, where they faced defending champion and #10 UCLA in the first round. The men's team swept all but one conference award while Glassman was named conference coach of the year. Glassman was named 2004 Stony Brook Co-Coach of the Year as five Seawolves -- Philippe Amireault, Michael Crooks, Egil Anonsen, Tal Meir and Alamgir Wali--were named All-America East. Anonsen set the school record for career singles wins (71) while taking home Stony Brook Athlete of the Year Honors. The team rattled off 11 consecutive wins en route to a 19-3 record and achieved its first-ever ITA national ranking, reaching as high as No. 70 in the polls. For his efforts, Glassman was recognized as the ITA Northeast Region Men's Coach of the Year. Excellence in the classroom as well as on the court is stressed by Glassman as more than 60 student-athletes have earned ITA All-Academic Team awards. Glassman has enjoyed extensive success at every stop during his coaching career. In 1999, he guided the men's program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, N.Y., to a regional ranking and a runner-up finish in the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association. The Red Hawks went 10-5, and Glassman was awarded conference Coach of the Year honors. Glassman also coached the University of Louisiana-Monroe women's tennis program to two straight Southland Conference championships in 1996-97, earning conference Coach of the Year honors in 1997. In 1996, he was selected the Louisiana Sportswriters Coach of the Year. Louisiana-Monroe did not lose a conference match during Glassman's two-year reign, posting a 16-0 record and a national ranking during both seasons. Glassman turned the Georgia Southern women's program around and cracked the Division I national ranks, reaching a high ranking of 42 in 1995. He improved a Lady Eagles squad that went 11-22 during his first two seasons to a 25-9 mark over his last two years, including a 12-2 record in conference play. Glassman's finest season at GSU came in 1995 after the team won the regular season and tournament crowns, going 7-0 in conference play and 14-3 overall. He earned Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors for his efforts, tallying the most wins for the program since 1982. A Dean's List student and outstanding athlete at Oneonta State, Glassman was voted team captain and most valuable player during his junior and senior seasons and still ranks among the program's top 10 in total wins. Glassman earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1989, and coached at the College of St. Rose upon graduation. He earned his master's degree in sports management in 1991 from Georgia Southern.
