Anjalé Barrett
Assistant Coach
Head coach Joy McCorvey announced the hiring of Anjalé Barrett as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on May 15, 2024. Barrett made an immediate impact in her first year with the program, as Stony Brook posted a 12-18 overall record and 7-11 mark in league play. She developed the performance of each Seawolves' guard, guiding Zaida Gonzalez and Breauna Ware to All-Conference honors. Barrett came to the Island from Monmouth University where she served as an assistant coach since May of 2021. The former Hawk helped lead her squad to new heights in her first season down the shore. She helped guide Monmouth to a 12-win improvement, the largest turnaround in program history from one year to the next. It also marked the most wins for Monmouth since the 2018-19 season. In the 2022-23 season, she helped lead the Hawks to a 18-6 (9-9) record to earn the No. 7 seed in the CAA Tournament. The Hawks won four consecutive games in the tournament over No. 10 College of Charleston, No. 2 Drexel, No. 3 Northeastern, and No. 1 Towson to secure the first Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championship in program history. With the championship victory, the Hawks punched their ticket to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1983 where they battled Tennessee Tech in the First Four. This past season, the Hawks again increased their win total, finishing 22-10 (14-4 CAA) to earn themselves the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament. The squad also earned a ticket to the WNIT Tournament. With Barrett's guidance this past season, Jania Hall earned the CAA Sixth Player of the Year award, while Kaci Donovan and Ariana Vanderhoop were named All-CAA Third Team. She also helped propel Stella Clark into earning Second Team All-MAAC accolades during her first season with Monmouth. Prior to Monmouth, Barrett spent the 2020-21 season as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for Coppin State University. The native of New York returned to her roots in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 season as she made stops at LIU Brooklyn and Columbia University. After helping LIU to the Northeast Conference Tournament in her only season, she helped the Lions to a nine-win improvement and a trip to the Ivy League Tournament. Columbia's 17 overall wins and eight conference victories were its most in a decade and marked just the second time since becoming a Division I program that the Lions posted a winning season. The Lions assistant coach was instrumental in the guidance and development of WNBA selection and All-American forward Abbey Hsu and First Team All-Ivy League recipient Sienna Durr. Following her first collegiate coaching experience at the College of New Rochelle, Barrett returned to her alma mater in 2016 as the Director of Recruiting Operations and Player Personnel at Maryland University. She was a part of Terrapins' teams that made back-to-back NCAA Tournament trips and won the 2017 Big Ten Championship. The former Terp ended her career with 796 career points and 486 career assists, sixth-most on Maryland's all-time list in assists at the conclusion of her career. Barrett helped lead the Terrapins to the NCAA Tournament all four years, including three appearances in the Elite Eight, as well as the 2009 and 2012 ACC title. She earned her bachelor's degree in American Studies in 2012. After her playing career with Maryland, Barrett was selected 26th overall by the Washington Mystics in the 2012 WNBA Draft and played professionally in France for two seasons with Caen France. In high school, the New York native was ranked the No. 3 among point guards in the class of 2007 and 11th overall by the All-Star Girls Report. She also earned All-American honors and New York State Sportswriters Association (NYSSWA) All-State recognition during her time at St. Michael Academy.
