Steve Mauro

Head Coach

Mauro revitalized the Owl men's tennis program, guiding the squad to a 17-8 record and a third-place finish at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Tournament. It marked a 14-win turnaround from the previous season and the conference finish was the highest by a Temple team since the 2000 season.  Twelve times men's players have earned All-Atlantic 10 honors under Mauro's direction. 2012 graduate Filip Rams became just the second Temple player to earn four-straight all-league nods, and the first ever to make the first team all four years.  In 2010, Rams became the first Temple mens tennis player to earn Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Performer of the Year honors since 1995.  Mauro has also seen three different players earn a spot on the Academic All-Conference team, including Kacper Rams in 2012. Mauro has a 100-94 (.515) men's career record at Temple. The 2008-09 season marked the first for Mauro in charge of the women's program.  He inherited a team that had won the Atlantic 10 championship the year before, and despite the challenge of coaching both programs, led the squad to a 17-6 overall record and second place finish in the conference tournament. Under his tutelage, Mauro's women's players have earned All-Atlantic 10 accolades 13 different times. Last season, the Owls placed two players on the all-league teams with Alicia Doms making the first team and Yana Mavrina earning a spot on the second team. In addition, 2010 graduate Anastasiia Rukavyshnykova was a two-time member of the A-10 Academic All-Conference team. In seven seasons with the women, Mauro has put together a 69-40  (.633) dual match record. Mauro brings an extensive tennis background in both playing and teaching tennis to North Broad Street. He is certified by the United States Professional Tennis registry and has been involved with many of the United States Tennis Association's programs.  He also served as a full-time professional tennis instructor at Fossler Cheltenham Tennis Center in Elkins Park, Pa. There, he taught a diverse group of students including regionally and nationally ranked juniors. An active member of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, Mauro sits on the advisory staff for Head-Penn Racquet Sports.  He has also served as the Director of Tennis at Talamore Country Club as well as the Head Tennis Professional at the Horsham Tennis Club in Horsham, Pa.  Mauro and his wife, Polly, reside in Collegeville with their children, Kurt and Derek.  Steve Mauro is in his ninth season as the Temple University men's tennis coach and his sixth as the TU womens coach. Before taking over the Owls, he had served as the head men's tennis coach at Ursinus College for two seasons (2003-05).  In his first year in charge of the men, Mauro revitalized the Owl men's tennis program, guiding the squad to a 17-8 record and a third-place finish at the 2006 Atlantic 10 Tournament.
