Dylan Johnson
Assistant Coach
Johnson joined the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's basketball staff as Assistant Coach prior to the 2023-24 season. He spent the previous five years at Texas State, including the last as Director of Basketball Operations/Recruiting Coordinator. Johnson also worked as an assistant coach and graduate assistant in his time with the Bobcats. He helped Texas State win back-to-back regular season Sun Belt Conference titles in 2020-21 and 2021-22. Prior to joining the Bobcat staff, Johnson worked for a year at Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. He served as the associate head coach with the varsity team and as the head coach of the junior varsity squad. His lone season with the Bulldogs saw him help coach the team to the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season and tournament championships. The team received the No. 3 seed in the NAIA DII National Tournament, ended the year ranked No. 9 in the country, and recorded a 23-8 record. UC had three all-conference, three all-academic, and two all-defensive team selections. Along with his coaching duties, Johnson also served as the Bulldogs’ recruiting coordinator, video coordinator, logistics coordinator, supervised team managers directed the strength and conditioning program and aided in fundraising and community outreach actives. Johnson worked two years at Snead State Community College in Boaz, Alabama before heading to Union College. At SSCC he was the associate head coach with the men’s basketball team and the head coach of both the women’s basketball and men’s junior varsity programs. His duties included serving as the recruiting coordinator, director of player development, planning and coordinating practices, logistics coordinator, video coordinator, and director of strength and conditioning for both programs. During his time at SSCC, over 30 athletes graduated and went on to play at four-year colleges or universities. In 2016, Johnson recruited and signed the entire men’s basketball class that went on to win the 2017-18 NJCAA Region 22 Championship for the first time in 28 years. He also helped the men’s team to an 11-win increase (eight to 19 wins) in his first year. As the women’s coach, Johnson recorded a 14-win improvement in the 2015-16 season going from seven victories to 21. He followed with 19 wins in the 2016-17 campaign. Johnson worked one year as a head coach and director of post-graduate player development in Sarasota, Florida for IMPACT Basketball Academy. During his time there he planned practices, scouted other teams, and worked on skill development for elite high school athletes. He began his coaching career as the freshman boys’ basketball and varsity assistant coach at Saline High School in Saline, Michigan and served in the roles from Oct. 2012 to Aug. 2014. Johnson graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Arts degree in sport management in May 2014.

Robert Edwards
Assistant Coach
Robert Edwards returned to the Island University ahead of the 2024-25 season, rejoining the staff as an Assistant Coach. He previously worked for the Islanders' men's basketball team as the Video Coordinator for the 2019-20 season where he was responsible for preparing analytics and scouting reports of opposing teams, while also overseeing all game film recording and exchange. Edwards comes back after a few stops, most recently at Kansas City where he was the Roos' Director of Basketball Operations before elevating to Director of Recruiting prior to the 2023-24 season. The 2023-24 season was one of the program's best in recent history as a six-game win streak to end the regular season helped Kansas City earn a second place finish in the Summit League standings, tied for the best finish in program history. In his first season as the Director of Recruiting, Edwards helped the Roos bring in eight newcomers, including Newcomer of the Year and First Team All-Summit performer Jamar Brown, Newcomer of the Year Khristion Courseault and Freshman of the Year Jayson Petty. In addition, Edwards' assistance was key as Head Coach Marvin Menzies brought home Coach of the Year honors, becoming the second coach in program history to do so. In 2022-23, Kansas City was consistently ranked as one of the best defensive teams in the Summit, leading the league in rebounds per game and scoring defense. At the end of the season, Shemarri Allen and RayQuawndis Mitchell were both named Second Team All-Summit League. Allen was also named to the All-Defensive Team while Mitchell earned a spot on the All-Newcomer squad. As Director of Operations, Edwards took on many roles, including the organization of all travel arrangements, including air, bus, hotel and dining arrangements. He coordinates practice times and organize itineraries for official and unofficial visits, and assists in updating the team's recruiting database. From 2020-22, Edwards was at New Mexico where he was responsible for handling video for the Lobos, including game film exchange, recording and clipping of practices and scout video. From Edwards's first-to-second season, New Mexico posted a seven-win improvement. While pursuing his master's degree, Edwards spent two seasons at the University of Nevada under Head Coach Eric Musselman, serving as a graduate assistant coach. The Wolf Pack saw success during his time on campus, winning two Mountain West regular season championships, qualifying to the NCAA Tournament both years and making a Sweet Sixteen appearance in his first season. Overall, the Wolf Pack went 58-13 in his two years, tying the single season program record for victories both seasons (29). In 2016, Edwards received his bachelor's degree in communications with a minor in coaching at the University of Nebraska. While there, he spent four seasons as a manager for the Huskers' men's basketball team. In his final year, he was the head student manager. Raised in Overland Park, Kansas, Edwards graduated from Blue Valley West HS in 2012.

Ralph Davis
Assistant Coach
Ralph Davis joined the staff as Assistant Coach in 2021-22. He arrived at The Island University after spending three seasons at New Mexico. He also served at New Mexico Military Institute as the Broncos head coach. Since his arrival, the Islanders have won three conference championships, including the 2022-23 Southland Conference regular season crown and back-to-back SLC Tournament titles. It resulted in consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. Davis assisted the Islanders in winning their first-ever NCAA Tournament game this past season after beating Southeast Missouri State in the First Four. A&M-Corpus Christi won 13 of its final 15 games and were the first school to win the SLC Tournament in back-to-back years since 1992-94. Davis was at New Mexico from 2018-21. He began as the video coordinator, was promoted to director of operations in June 2019 and promoted to an assistant coach position in Sept. 2020. From 2009-18, Davis worked at NMMI. He served in the assistant and associate coach capacity from Aug. 2009-July 2015 and was instrumental in the recruitment of 16 players that moved on to the NCAA Division I level and another 15 that advanced to the collegiate scholarship level. He helped the squad to the NJCAA Region V tournament for just the fourth time in school history and his responsibilities included creating video edits and scout reports while handling multiple game-day operation tasks. He was promoted to head coach of the Broncos in August 2015 where he coached a trio of First Team All-Conference honorees and coached the team to a .500 record in WJCAC for just the second time in the last 14 years. He also helped lead the 2017-18 team to a top-20 ranking in NJCAA in points per game and offensive rebounds per game. During Davis’ tenure at the Institute, the Broncos enjoyed continuous year-by-year improvement for five of the last six seasons, with 40 players moving on to play at the D1, D2 and NAIA level. Davis was an integral part of the player development on and off the court and had a hand in the improvement of all aspects of the program, mentoring four WJCAC first team selections as well as six honorable mention selections. During the 2014-15 season, as associate head coach, he helped the Broncos to their first Region V tournament appearance since 2002. Through that time they proved to be a formidable opponent, celebrating an 11-1 record at the Cahoon Armory. While working under head coach Sean Schooley, the Broncos adopted a staunch rebounding mentality and finished top five nationally in offensive rebounds per game, top 10 nationally in total rebounds per game and top 20 in rebound margin. They led the conference in all three of those categories. Prior to NMMI, Davis was the assistant coach under Pete Peterson at Texas A&M–Kingsville for the 2007-09 seasons. At Kingsville, he was tasked with recruiting, opponent scouting and daily operations. During this time, Davis helped develop two Lone Star Conference Defensive Players of the Year. Along with a first team All-Lone Star Conference selection, Davis also coached two second team All-LSC selections and three LSC honorable mention choices. And in the 2008-09 season, the Javelinas returned to the NCAA Division II Tournament for the first time in five seasons, just the fourth time in school history. As a player, Davis was WJCAC Honorable Mention selection and started all 30 games during his sophomore year with the Broncos. He would move on to Texas A&M–Kingsville and become a member of the first nationally ranked Kingsville basketball team in more than 11 seasons. The east coast native graduated from Texas A&M–Kingsville in 2007 with a degree in criminology and in 2009 with a master’s in sociology. He is an alum of the New Mexico Military Institute with an Associate of Arts degree. He is also the 2003 New Jersey State triple jump champion. Davis has worked at various camps across the country not limited to the HOOP GROUP Elite Camp and recently the Under Armour All-American Camp.

Terrence Rencher

Bringing 15 years of Division I coaching experience to the Island, the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men’s basketball team announced the hiring of Terrence Rencher as an assistant coach in July 2024. A former NBA guard and the all-time leading scorer in Texas Longhorn history, Terrence Rencher joins the Islanders ahead of the 2024-25 season as an Assistant Coach after spending three years at Oklahoma State recently serving as the Associate Head Coach. In 15 years as a Division I assistant, Rencher has proven himself as an excellence teacher, developer, evaluator and recruiter. He took on recruiting coordinator responsibilities at OSU prior to the 2022-23 season and, in his first full cycle, helped the Cowboys ink a top-10 signing class. In his first season (2021-22), Rencher helped the Cowboys to a 15-15 record and a fifth-place finish in the Big 12. As a team, the Pokes posted the fourth-best adjusted efficiency defense in the country that year, alongside the seventh-best block percentage and held teams to the ninth-lowest two-point shooting percentage, according to KenPom. Prior to OSU, Rencher was an assistant at Creighton (2019-21), San Diego (2017-19), New Mexico (2015-17), Texas State (2013-15 and 2009-11), Sam Houston State (2012-13) and Tulsa (2011-12). In two seasons at Creighton under head coach Greg McDermott, Rencher helped the Bluejays to a combined 46-16 record, highlighted by the program’s first Big East regular season title in 2020 and a Sweet 16 appearance in 2021. Along the way he helped groom four all-conference selections in Ty-Shon Alexander, Marcus Zegarowski, Damien Jefferson and Denzel Mahoney. Rencher was part of back-to-back 20-win seasons at San Diego, which won a pair of CIT games during the 2018 postseason and earned a bid to the 2019 NIT. Prior to USF, he was on staff at New Mexico for two seasons under Craig Neal (2015-17). The Lobos posted double-digit Mountain West Conference wins in both years and led the nation in free throw rate in 2017. Rencher worked with two different head coaches in two separate stints at Texas State. Under Doug Davalos (2009-11), the Bobcats twice ranked among the nation’s top-five in tempo and won a share of the Southland’s 2011 West Division title. Under defensive-minded Danny Kaspar (2013-15), TSU led the Sun Belt in scoring defense in back-to-back years. In between, Rencher spent a year each at Tulsa (2011-12) and Sam Houston State (2012-13) working with Doug Wojcik and Jason Hooten respectively. Sparked by Jordan Clarkson, a first team All-Conference USA performer and eventual NBA Draft pick, the 2012 Golden Hurricane overcame a slow start to finish tied for third in the CUSA race. The 2013 Bearkats posted a 17-17 record and made the Southland tournament semifinals. Rencher’s coaching career began at Regents School of Austin where he served as head coach during the 2007-08 season. He moved into the college ranks a year later as graduate assistant under hall of famer Rick Majerus at Saint Louis. A Bronx native, Rencher was New York’s Mr. Basketball in 1991 while leading St. Raymonds High School to a city championship. He went on to play at the University of Texas where he finished as the program’s all-time leader in both points (2,306) and steals (255). The two-time All-Southwest Conference selection and 1992 Dick Vitale National Freshman of the Year helped guide the Longhorns to three NCAA tournaments and three conference titles. Rencher was selected in the second round, No. 32 overall, by the Washington Bullets in the 1995 NBA Draft and later spent time with the Miami Heat and Phoenix Suns. Rencher’s 12-year professional journey eventually took him to the CBA and overseas. He was a league MVP in Italy and Germany and an all-star in Israel in Croatia. After retiring, Rencher returned to the University of Texas where he completed his bachelor’s degree in education with a focus on youth and community studies in 2007. He and his wife, Faye, have two daughters: Siena and Savannah.

Johnathan Bell is entering his third year with the Islanders. He currently serves as the program's Director of Player Development after spending two years as a graduate assistant. In his time on The Island, Bell has assisted with player development, scouting, and video breakdowns. Bell has been a part of an Islanders program that has won three conference championships, including the 2022-23 Southland Conference regular season crown and back-to-back SLC Tournament titles. It resulted in consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament. He came to The Island University after a successful stint as the head high school coach at Calabasas High School in Southern California. After beginning his collegiate career at Garden City Community College in Garden City, KS, Bell signed with fellow Southland Conference school Nicholls State University. Bell had a successful stint as a professional basketball player spending time in both Mexico and Spain before starting his own nonprofit for youth sports back in his home state of California. In 2017, Bell graduated with his Bachelor degree in Marketing & Humanities from Nicholls State and will be pursuing his MBA at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
