Head Coach
Heines was hired as an assistant coach for baseball in July of 2013. In addition to serving as the Bulldogs' pitching coach, Coach Heines is the Bulldogs' recruiting coordinator. Heines has teamed with Head Coach Greg Burnett to lead the Bulldogs to the baseball post-season in each of the last three seasons and to the 2013 NCAA Division III Championship (Austin Regional). In 2015, TLU posted a 25-14 overall record with a 14-6 mark in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Bulldogs placed second in the SCAC regular-season race and grabbed the No. 2 seed for the SCAC Championship. The Bulldogs of 2015 posted a team ERA of 3.77, which ranked 71st in the nation (NCAA DIII) and third in the SCAC. The Bulldogs were 18th in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (8.27) and ranked second in the SCAC in that category. TLU pitchers also ranked 91st in the nation in walks allowed per nine innings, and the team was second in the SCAC in that category. The Bulldogs' ace of 2015, senior right-hander Aaron Aleman, was a First Team All-SCAC selection and a member of the AFCA All-West Region Second Team. Aleman posted a 1.98 ERA with a 7-3 pitching record. He tossed four complete games, two shutouts and an opponent batting average of .171. Aleman was ninth in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings (5.54), 64th in ERA, and 35th in strikeouts (74). Aleman also ranked eighth in all of DIII in WHIP (walks-hits per nine innings)., Aleman's WHIP was 0.84. In 2014, the Bulldogs went 27-17 overall and 11-7 in the SCAC, claiming the second seed in the SCAC Championship tournament and finishing as the tournament runner-up. The Bulldogs recorded a team ERA of 3.27 and struck out 253 batters in 368.2 innings. TLU pitching was 30th in NCAA DIII in total shutouts (5), 42nd in WHIP (1.31), and 41st in ERA (3.27). The staff ace of 2014, Dwayne Snider, was a First Team All-SCAC and Third Team All-West Region selection and ranked 58th nationally in ERA at 1.81. Following the 2014 season, junior right-hander Kyle Simmons was taken in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft by the Washington Nationals. In 2013, Heines' first year with the Bulldogs, TLU advanced to the NCAA Division III Championship (Austin Regional), won the American Southwest Conference West Division Championship, won a post-season divisional series, and finished third at the ASC Championship Tournament. TLU received an at-large bid to the NCAA post-season and dropped games at the regional to No. 1-ranked and eventual national champion Linfield (Ore.) 2-0 and to then No. 8 California Lutheran 4-3. The Bulldogs completed 2013 with an overall record of 33-14 with an ASC mark of 16-2. The Bulldogs went 16-6 at home and 15-3 on the road. Sean Kistler, TLU's closer, claimed All-American honors after not allowing a run (earned or unearned) the entire season. Kistler saved 14 games (a new school record) and went 1-0 with that ERA of 0.00. He struck out 33 and walked 12 in 29.1 innings of work. Heines served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Texas A&M-Kingsville from 2010 to 2012 (three seasons). In 2012, the Javelinas received an at-large bid to an NCAA Division II baseball regional. The Javelinas pitching staff led the Lone Star Conference in earned run average and strikeouts-to-walks ratio. Heines has coached eight Major League Baseball draft picks. This list includes Jaden Dillon, the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year and a 29th round draft pick by the Atlanta Braves in 2012. Heines also coached Javelinas closer Cameron Dullnig, who broke the school record for saves and finished with a 0.00 ERA. Coach Heines is a native of San Antonio, Texas, and a graduate of San Antonio Madison High School. Heines graduated from Purdue University in 2007 with a bachelor's degree in Movement and Sports Science. He has an associate's degree in kinesiology from Midland College. Heines was all-conference at Midland College in 2004. He was All-Big 10 as a pitcher and Academic All-Big 10 in 2006. In 2007, Heines tied for the NCAA Division I season lead in shutouts, with four. Heines was a volunteer assistant for Purdue in 2008. He assisted with the pitchers. That season, Purdue lost 3-2 to Michigan in the Big 10 title game. Heines is the son of Rick and Debra Heines of San Antonio. Rick and his wife Emily were married in 2014.
