Jerwin Wilson

Coach

Jerwin Wilson begins his sixth season as the wide receivers coach at Texas Southern University and fifth as the team's recruiting coordinator and assistant head coach. Wilson's receiving unit was one of the most productive units on the offensive side of the ball in his first season at TSU as six players finished the 2019 season with 20-plus receptions. Senior wide receiver Donnie Corley, Jr. was the lone player in the SWAC to average 100-plus receiving yards per game (103.9) while also leading the conference with 72 receptions. He finished with 1,039 yards on the season. Corley had five games with 100-plus yards receiving with a high of 198 at Houston Baptist on Sept. 28. He also had three games with 10-plus receptions as he had a high of 12 receptions also versus HBU. Fellow receiver Tren'davian Dickson also made headlines with a career-high 220 yards at Incarnate Word. Despite a change in faces as TSU opened the 2021 spring season, the unit was well on its way to having another productive season with six receivers having three or more receptions in only two games played in addition to working with three different quarterbacks due to injuries. In the fall of 2021, Wilson began the season in search of a go-to wide receiver as none of the returnees had more than 200 yards total from the previous season. By the time the season came to an end, Wilson had several as Ke’lenn Davis jumped into the role as he finished the year with 893 yards on 47 receptions. Fellow wideout Jonathan Giles also emerged as an offensive threat as the season went on with 375 yards and six touchdowns along with redshirt freshman All-SWAC tight end Jyrin Johnson, who caught 32 passes for 467 yards. Despite losing nearly 2,000 yards of production and the top three wide receivers from the previous season, Wilson made the adjustment as wide receiver Derek Morton emerged as TSU's top wideout and a 2023 All-SWAC Preseason honoree with a career-high 36 receptions for 571 yards after catching only eight passes the previous season. Tight end Tavaris Achane also emerged as a threat in the passing game with 23 receptions along with newcomer A.J. Bennett, who caught 22 receptions and a team-high five touchdowns. In 2023, Wilson once again showed his knack to adapt to change as an early season injury at quarterback and wide receiver changed the direction of the offense after one game. Despite the change at both positions, Wilson's unit helped produce the SWAC's Newcomer of the Year at quarterback as two wideouts (Jyrin Johnson, Quay Davis) finished top 10 in the SWAC with 37 receptions apiece while Trenton Leary emerged with a 22-catch season and finished 12th in the SWAC with 15.4 yards per reception. Wilson came to Texas Southern after spending six years as head coach and athletic director at Woodlawn High School in Shreveport, La. Wilson had a successful tenure as he led his team to the Class 4A playoffs in all six seasons as head coach. He also led Woodlawn to the 2017 Quarterfinals, which was the school’s first trip since 1979. He also led the Knights to a 10-win season in 2016 and its first undefeated district championship since 1990. Wilson was named the 2016 Shreveport Times All-City Coach of the Year, 2016 District 1-4A Coach of the Year, 2016 Football Frenzy Chevyland Coach of the Year and 2018 Shreveport Times Sports Awards Richard Lary Coach of the Year. He was influential in the signing of over 40 student-athletes to college scholarships during tenure, including 11 in February of 2018. Prior to becoming head coach at Woodlawn in 2013 at 26-years old, he spent four seasons as the Woodlawn’s offensive coordinator (2009-2012) and four seasons as offensive coordinator at his alma mater, Arcadia High School (2005-2008). Under his watch at Arcadia, the team advanced past the Bi-district round and the Regional Playoffs in 2007 and 2008. His offense averaged more than 35 points per game. The Arcadia, La. native attended the 2012 U.S. Army All-American Bowl Coaches Academy and has served as a coach in nearly 20 FBS summer camps. He is a member of the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA), Louisiana High School Athletic Directors Association (LHSADA), Louisiana High School Coaches Association (LHSCA) and Louisiana Football Coaches Association (LFCA). Wilson received a Bachelor of Science in Business Management in 2008 and a Master of Arts in Teaching in 2010 both from Louisiana Tech University. Wilson also received a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from Grambling State University in 2013. Wilson has two daughters, Zerenity and Zaniyah.   THE WILSON FILE   Hometown: Arcadia, La.
