Shawn Nadelen
Head Coach
Nadelen looks to continue to fill up the win column and trophy case at Towson. Since Nadelen took over the program, Towson has amassed an overall record of 53-32 (.624). During the 2016 CAA Tournament, Nadelen collected the 50th win of his tenure, besting rival Drexel 10-6 in the semifinals. He became the fastest coach to win 50 Division I games at Towson and is the second-fastest to the mark including the program's Division II days. For his efforts in guiding the Tigers to the 2016 CAA Regular Season title and the right to host the CAA Tournament, Nadelen was voted by his league peers as the 2016 CAA Coach of the Year, becoming just the second coach in the program's history to be named CAA Coach of the Year. Nadelen also saw then-junior Ryna Drenner voted as the program's second-ever CAA Co-Player of the Year, while Drenner's classmate, Jack Adams, was named USILA Third-Team All-America. After earning the program's sixth berth to the NCAA Tournament as the CAA champion, the Tigers knocked off defending national champion and second-ranked Denver in the first round with a thrilling 10-9 win in the Mile High City. That victory set a new single-season program record as Towson won its 16th game. During that same season, Towson won a program-record 11 games from the friendly confines of Johnny Unitas Stadium. Towson spent the entire 2016 seaosn ranked in both the USILA Coachesand the Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. The Tigers finished the year ranked 10th in the USILA Coaches' Poll, which came out prior to Towson's success in the NCAA Tournament. In the Media Poll, the Tigers were ranked sixth following the NCAA Tournament. Throughout the course of the year, Tiger players earned 46 individual honors, including redshirt senior keeper Tyler White earning USILA Scholar All-America honors. White was also named as a Senior CLASS Award First Team All-America selection. The 2015 CAA crown was the second for Towson under Nadelen, joining his first as the head coach of the program in 2013. Following the season, Nadelen signed a contract extension through the 2019 campaign, with an additional year added on should Towson win the CAA regular season championship or conference tournament. After earning the CAAs automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament in 2015, Nadelen coached the Tigers to their first win in the postseason since 2003 with a 10-8 win over visiting High Point in the First Four round. Through the 2015 campaign, Nadelen has coached players to the sports highest honors, including one third-team All-America, two honorable mention All-America, six first team All-CAA selections, eight second team All-CAA honors, five All-Rookies, one CAA Defensive Player of the Year, and one CAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player. In just his second season as head coach, Nadelen led the Tigers to their fourth CAA tournament title in 2013 and first since 2005. Towson also made its 11th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2007. The 10-8 record in 2013 marked the first winning record since 2007 and the first 10-win season since 2005. The Tigers earned three wins over top 20 teams in 2013 and ranked as high as 17th in the USILA poll. A highly decorated and respected collegiate and professional player, Nadelen spent seven seasons as an assistant coach for former Towson Head Coach Tony Seaman, including two years as the teams associate head coach and defensive coordinator. Since Nadelen arrived at Towson in 2004, he has sparked a defensive resurgence in which the Tigers have allowed an average of nine or fewer goals four times and finished among the nations top 20 defenses twice, including 2011 when the Tigers allowed 8.23 goals per game. During his first year at Towson, the Tigers ranked ninth in NCAA Division I in scoring defense, allowing just 7.88 goals per game. It was the Tigers best goals- against average (GAA) since the 1974 season when they won the Division II national championship with a 7.3 GAA. Towson continued its defensive excellence in 2006 when the team ranked third in the CAA with an 8.42 GAA while holding opponents to under 10 goals nine times. In 2008, the Tigers were fourth in the CAA with an 8.48 average. Nadelen began his coaching career in 2002 as an assistant coach at Princeton University for the legendary Bill Tierney. In his first season with the Tigers, he helped Princeton compile a 10-5 record and reach the national championship game, where Syracuse edged Princeton, 13-12. The next two seasons, he was part of a Princeton squad that had an 11-4 record and reached the NCAA Tournament each year. In his three seasons at Princeton, he helped the Ivy school compile a 33-13 record and win three straight league championships. A four-year starter and a senior captain for Johns Hopkins, Nadelen moved from midfield to close defense in his junior season. He led the Blue Jays to the NCAA semifinals twice during his playing career and was named an All-American in 2001. In addition to coaching, Nadelen had a very successful playing career at the indoor and outdoor professional level. A three-time Major League Lacrosse (MLL) champion with the Chesapeake Bayhawks, Nadelen played 11 seasons with the franchise. Nadelen also spent 10 years as a player in the National Lacrosse League (NLL). He played seven seasons for the Philadelphia Wings after stints with the New Jersey Storm and Minnesota Swarm. One of his greatest highlights as a player came in the summer of 2010 when he recovered from a serious knee injury to help Team USA win the gold medal at the Federation of International Lacrosse World Championships in England. A native of Rochester, New York, Nadelen is married to the former Mary Ciolek, who is a certified athletic trainer and a member of Towsons kinesiology faculty.
