Mike Shearon
Associate Head Coach
Shearon, who was previously the associate head coach with the Spartans, will begin his head coaching duties immediately. I am super excited to be named as the next head coach here at TWU, Shearon said. It is a huge honour to follow our two other CIS coaches whom I had the privilege to serve under. TWU has played a large role in my life since moving here in 1998 to work with Athletes in Action and I hope to lead the program to success both on and off the field and make the University and the alumni proud of our program, commented Shearon. I would like to thank Director of Athletics Murray Hall, Dr. Whitmarsh, and the university administration for their confidence in me and appointing me the next head coach. Although I have been around for a while, I know we are entering into a new chapter of TWU soccer and look forward to working with our current players to make them the best we can be. This is just another step in the journey that God has put me on and another opportunity to reflect and live for Him in the world of soccer and to be a good steward of what he has blessed us with. Dr. Blair Whitmarsh, TWU Dean of the School of Human Kinetics and Athletics, said: Mike is a passionate individual who has spent time under the leadership of two head coaches. He is now ready to take the leadership of this team and set us on a pathway to success. Mike is a spiritually focused person with a great understanding of high-level soccer. He has my full confidence. For the past five seasons, Shearon has been the associate mens soccer head coach with the Spartans and is currently in his 11th season with the Spartans mens soccer program. Prior to 2010, when he was promoted to associate head coach, Shearon was an assistant coach from 1998-2002 and 2004-2009. During that stretch, he helped coach the Spartans to three CIS medals (silver in 2006 and 2008 and bronze in 2005), three Canada West Championships (2005, 2006 and 2007) and three Canada West league titles (2003, 2004 and 2007). In addition to his on-field duties as the associate head coach, Shearon was also responsible for team administration and for building culture and mindset within the team both on and off the field. Shearon, who hails from Macedonia, Ohio and currently resides in Langley, B.C. has an extensive coaching resume. He has over 14 years of experience in coaching youth soccer camps and was the director of AIA Soccer Camps from 1998-2003. At the university and club level, Shearon has coached the Kopion FC Youth team from 1995-1997, was the JV and scouting coach with Wheaton College in 1996, the assistant coach at Cornerstone University in Grand Rapid, MI in 1997, the head coach of the Fraser Valley Action U21 team in 2001 and 2005 and the head coach of the Fraser Valley Action PCSL team in 2007. He is currently helping within the Langley United system as well. He has also coached a number teams on international tours. In 2000 he took a men's team to Ireland, while in 2004 he took a men's team to Albania and a women's team to Ireland and in 2008 he took a men's team to South Africa. Most recently he coached a team and ran clinics for coaches in Ethiopia. In addition to his work with the Spartans, Shearon works with Athletes in Action where he directs the Integration of Faith and Sport Division and works as a chaplain to professional sports teams. Shearon, who graduated from Wheaton College in 1996 with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science degree, played club soccer with Cleveland Internationals and played university soccer for the Wheaton College Thunder (Wheaton, IL) from 1992-95 where he was named All-CCIW (College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) in 1994 and 1995. He also holds an Advanced National Coaching Diploma from the NSCAA. Shearon replaces head coach Pat Rohla who recently resigned after five seasons leading the Spartans mens soccer program.
