Bob Sheldon
Head Coach
Sheldon leads a program with a winning tradition and a well-established reputation within the New England region. Coach Sheldon is the Jumbos' all-time leader in victories with 386 and enters the 2015-16 season 14 shy of joining the 400 career wins club. He is among the NCAA Division III top 50 active coaches for career victories. Sheldon has guided the Jumbos to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including a berth into the "Sweet 16." The 2005-06 team finished with a school record for wins with a 23-7 record, reached the NESCAC Championship final and advanced to the NCAA Tournament "Sweet Sixteen." Sheldon coached that team to a key victory against host Cortland State in the NCAA second round, as well as an exciting overtime loss against Amherst which ultimately ended their NCAA tournament run. Sheldon was voted D3Hoops.com's Northeast Region Coach of the Year that season. Sheldon guided two other Tufts teams to NCAA appearances including the 1994-1995 Jumbos who won 20 games to earn the programs first NCAA appearance. The 1996-1997 team won its final seven games to earn an NCAA berth. In conference play, Tufts has earned home court tournament berths in the competitive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) three times in the last four seasons. Last season the Jumbos had conference victories against NCAA Tournament qualifiers Trinity and Amherst. Sheldon and his staff continue to recruit some of the top players in the league to Tufts. Jumbos have won two recent NESCAC Rookie of the Year honors including Tom Palleschi in 2013 and Ben Ferris in 2012. Palleschi was the D3hoops.com Northeast Region Rookie of the Year in 2013 as well as an All-Conference selection last year. Pierce Larsson, a 2010 graduate, was named to the NESCAC All-Conference Teams three years in a row and was voted NESCAC Rookie of the Year in 2006-2007. Larsson is also the program's all-time leading scorer with 1,855 points, and was the NESCAC scoring leader in back-to-back seasons in 2008-2009 and 2007-2008. Tufts players also succeeded academically under Coach Sheldon. Two were named to the NESCAC All-Academic Team last year. Ferris was a 2013 Capital One Academic All-District ® Team selection. Sheldon has participated in nine NCAA Tournaments as player and coach. He is a 1977 graduate of St. Lawrence University and earned a master's degree in educational administration at Fordham in 1982. He was an assistant at Clark and Tufts prior to landing the head job in 1988. #
