Jon Drach

Head Coach

Jon Drach finished his second season as head coach of the Union College football team in 2025, having quickly brought the Garnet Chargers back to the top of the Liberty League.   After a challenging first season, Drach was named both the D3football.com Region 2 and ECAC Coach of the Year and helmed the Liberty League Coaching Staff of the Year in 2025 after engineering the second-largest turnaround in Division III. The team went from a 3-7 record in 2024 to an 8-2 regular-season record and the program's 14th NCAA Tournament appearance in his second season, completing the program's fourth undefeated conference slate (and second 7-0 finish) and ending the regular season on an eight-game winning streak. Led by Liberty League Offensive Player of the Year Patch Flanagan, Union boasted 16 All-Liberty League performers and senior offensive lineman Nick Olivola earned All-Region 2 second-team honors. In his first season at the helm of the Garnet Chargers, Union posted a 3-1 record at home as part of a challenging 10-game schedule that saw the team on the road for five of its first seven games. The team had 11 student-athletes named to the All-Liberty League teams and three - seniors Cole DaSilva and Nate Sullivan and sophomore Hayden Hall - earn D3football.com All-Region recognition.   Drach came to Union after a six-year stint at Wilkes University, where he took over a team that finished 0-10 the year before and led the Colonels to four straight winning seasons before placing second in the inaugural season of Landmark Conference play, earning the program's first postseason win in 17 years in 2023. With a 32-20 overall record in five seasons, he boasts the highest winning percentage (.615) for a coach in program history and is third all-time in victories at Wilkes.   In his time in Wilkes-Barre, Drach recruited and coached 41 All-Conference honorees, three D3football.com All-Region selections, one Middle Atlantic Conference Offensive Player of the Year and one Landmark Conference Rookie of the Year. Wilkes also boasted 139 MAC All-Academic Team honorees in his five seasons.   Off the field, Drach began a four-year term on the NCAA Football Rules Committee in February 2024, serving as one of only four NCAA head coaches on the committee alongside Kirby Smart (University of Georgia), Aaron Best (Eastern Washington University) and John Wristen (Colorado State University-Pueblo). He also serves on the AFCA Division III Head Coaches Committee and has presented at multiple AFCA Conventions.   Prior to Wilkes, Drach spent 11 seasons at fellow Liberty League school Hobart College, helping the Statesmen to a combined 92-24 record as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.    Drach graduated from Western Michigan University in 2004 with a bachelor's degree in finance and economics. He was a three-year starting quarterback for the Broncos from 2001-03 and posted a then-program-record .670 completion percentage as a senior. That season included a career-high 391 yards against the University of Connecticut and a program-record 94-yard touchdown pass to future NFL draft pick and Pro Bowler Greg Jennings against Central Michigan University.
