David Cain
Head Coach
Cain is now in his 19th season as head coach of the UAH men's and women's cross country and track and field programs, assuming his role back in 1998. During Cain's tenure in Huntsville, he has established UAH as one of the premier cross country programs in Division II and one of the most respectable track and field programs in the region. In Cain's 18 highly productive and successful seasons, he has earned GSC Coach of the Year honors five times and has led the UAH men to four NCAA Division II National Championship appearances in cross country. He has also led the Charger women to five GSC Championships in 1999, 2003-04, 2010 and 2012-13. Cain, having built the track and field program from the ground up, led the men's and women's track and field programs to their first-ever Peach Belt Conference Championships in 2013 in Rome, Ga., and followed that up with another women's title in 2014, while being named PBC Women's Track & Field Coach of the Year in 2015. During the 2016 campaign, Coach Cain saw Vicky Winslow become a first-time All-American during the cross country season, while helping send three participants each to Indoor and Outdoor Nationals. Barber was named a three-time All-American in the 60 meter in Indoor, while Burnett was a Indoor and Outdoor All-American for the second consecutive season in 60 meter hurdles. In 2015, Cain mentored NCAA Indoor and Outdoor All-Americans Katelin Barber (60m, 100m) and Ackiesha Burnett (60H, 100H), with Michelle Kruse and Kailey Williams earning National bids during cross country season. Both the men and the women took home first place the second year of PBC affiliation in 2014, with the women claiming two championships in three years of league membership. For his work at the 2014 Championships, Cain was named PBC Coach of the Year. During the highly-successful Cain era, UAH has become one of the top cross country teams in the Gulf South Conference and the NCAA South Region. Since 1998, the women's program has placed in the top two at the Gulf South Conference Championship nine times, and the Charger men have finished in the top three in the GSC nine times, including claiming the meet title in 2007, 2011 and 2012. The program saw immediate improvements as the women's side won all but one of it's meets in 1999, including the Gulf South Conference Championship. That year the Charger men also showed vast improvement moving up from sixth to second at the GSC meet. Cain was named both the Men's and Women's GSC Coach of the year in 1999. Since the 1999 season, Harding University has been undefeated in the GSC on the men's side, and the women had won three straight until UAH broke their streak in 2003. The 2003 season was truly a banner campaign as the women claimed their second GSC Championship by placing six runners on the All Conference list. Cain was again named the GSC Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year. The team went on to place third at the South Regional, which earned the Lady Chargers their first trip to the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships. UAH finished 15th, which equaled their national ranking heading into the meet. The 2004 cross country season brought Cain his third GSC Women's Coach of the Year Award in as many years as the Lady Chargers successfully defended their GSC title. Also during the 2004 season, the women earned their highest ranking climbing as high as ninth in Division II. In 2005, the Lady Chargers were ranked as high as 11th in the DII poll before finishing 18th at the NCAA Championships. In a truly memorable season in 2007, Cain led the Charger men's team to its first GSC title, edging out perinnial power Harding University. The accomplishment earned Cain his second Men's Coach of the Year honor. Cain is a graduate of Mississippi State University (Starkville, Miss.) where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Fitness Management. While at MSU, he was on both the cross country and track teams and was in charge of public relations for the M-Club. Cain was named Athletic Academic All-SEC, to the Presidents List, and to the MSU Athletic Department Honor Roll. A native of Huntsville, Cain graduated from Grissom High School where he lettered in track and cross country. His senior season he was named All-City and All-State in both sports, and finished second in the state in the two mile race. Cain worked a semester as a Fitness Management Intern with the MSU strength and conditioning coaches. He then managed First Place Athletics, a running specialty store and worked as a fitness instructor at PRSM Fitness Center (Huntsville, Ala.). Cain's wife Ashley, is also an avid runner. The couple resides in Huntsville and are proud parents of five children, Philip, James, Elizabeth, Annabell and Alexis.
