Head Coach
James has won three consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference Western Division Titles (2014, 2015, 2016), recorded consecutive four 20-plus win seasons (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016) and produced two conference players of the year. James who is a strong believer in hard work in the class room and on the field of play has tallied over 85-plus student-athletes to earn SWAC All-Academic Team honors and 18 student-athletes to be inducted into the prestigious student-athlete honor society of Beta Chapter of Chi Alpha Sigma. In addition in his tenure here at UAPB, James has had four player to go on to sign MLB contracts. Began his coaching career as an assistant baseball coach at UAPB from 1998 to 2001. After a five year hiatus from baseball, James joined the professional ranks when he was named associate scout with the Seattle Mariners in 2005. After three seasons with the Mariners, James was named interim head baseball coach at the University of Arkansas at Monticello in the middle of the 2008 season. James and his Boll Weevils finished the season 0-14 under his tutelage. In his first his three series as head coach. James faced the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 team rank in NCAA Division II from the Gulf South Conference Western Division. In the 2009 season, James begin to turn the program around as the UAM finished the season 9-38-1. UAM picked up wins against top rank opponents as the Boll Weevils defeated No. 3 rank North Alabama, 4-3 and defeated No. 9 rank West Alabama, 9-3. The 2010 season was the breakout season for the Boll Weevils with UAM receiving their first ever national rank being rank No. 9 in the National College Baseball Writers Association South Region Poll on March 1 of that year. To add to their accolades of the season, the Boll Weevils recorded their first conference sweep since the 2005 season and doubled their win total from 2009. Also UAM had two Boll Weevils to earn GSC players of the week and one pitcher of the week honoree. That season James, also produced two All-GSC second team selections in Brent Noble and Brian Johnson. UAM finished the season 20-26, their first 20 win season since 2006. After two and half seasons at UAM, James was named head baseball coach at UAPB in October of 2010. After two seasons of rebuilding the Golden Lions baseball program. UAPB recorded their first 20-plus win season since the 2002 season with the Golden Lions recording a 21-32 record in the 2013 season. In addition, UAPB finished second in the SWAC Western Division with a 13-11 record and earning a berth to the SWAC Baseball Tournament that season. The Golden Lions recorded a milestone win of James tenure with a 6-4 win over Texas Christian University of the Big 12 conference. James that season produced the SWAC Player of the Year and First Team All-Conference performer in Isias Alcantar. The next season, the Golden Lions caught fire as they recorded their second straight 20-plus win season and winning the schools first ever SWAC Western Division Title in school history with a 22-28 overall record and a 16-7 record in conference play. Both Alcantar and Kevin Walsh earned Second Team All-Conference honors with Alcantar being drafted by Tampa Bay Rays in the 36 round. Thus becoming James second draft pick since Chretien Matz in the 2012 season a 44 round pick by the Detroit Tigers. UAPB again repeated their success in the 2015 season with the Golden Lions winning their second consecutive SWAC Western Division Title with a 25-16 overall record and a 17-6 record in conference play, marking the second time in school history that the Golden Lions recorded a 25-win season. The Golden Lions finished the rank 25 in the NCAA in strike out per nine innings with 330 strikeouts in 353.0 innings pitched, averaging 8.4 strikeouts per nine inning. James added another milestone to his list of accomplishment in the 2015 season with Golden Lions players earning First Team All-Conference performers in Andre Davis, Blake Estep and Walsh with both Davis and Walsh being selected in the 2015 MLB draft. Davis an eighth round pick by the Kansas City Royals and Walsh a 2lst round selection by the Philadelphia Phillies. In addition, UAPB Baseballers had 24 players to earned SWAC All-Academic honors, the most under James tutelage. Also that season James and his Golden Lions of the Diamond recorded wins against rank opponents with UAPB defeating then No. 7 rank and undefeated Mississippi State, 3-2 and No. 23 rank Missouri, 8-3. UAPB recorded milestone wins over Kansas, 6-5 and Louisiana Tech, 5-4. In 2016, UAPB proved to be the team to beat in the SWAC Western Division with the Golden Lions winning their third straight western division title with 16-6 conference record and 22-24 record overall. For the second time in his tenure at UAPB, James produced the conference player of the year with Skyler Henson being named the SWAC Relief Pitcher of Year. James received his Bachelors of Science in General Studies from UAPB in 2002. In his career as a player, James as an outfielder was drafted multiple times by the Oakland Athletics (1990, 1991 and 1992). Also James a hometown hero played for the Pine Bluff Locomotives an independent team of the Big South League in 1997. He finished the season with a .297 batting averaging and a 1.000 fielding percentage. James is married to the former Ms. Deborah Dunn of Pine Bluff, Ark., and they are the proud parents of five children and two grandchildren.
