Roger "The Legend" Totten

Head Coach

Roger " The Legend" Totten has more than 30 years of athletic administration and coaching experience. In May 2021, Totten was promoted to the Deputy Athletics Director who is responsible for internal operations, compliance, and academic services for the UAPB Athletics department.  Totten has extensive work and knowledge in athletic student services, academic progress rates, and fundraising.  He has served as an assistant professor in the department of physical education at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff,Alabama State University, Mississippi Valley State University, Alcorn State University, Tuskegee University, and Grambling State University. Totten has a strong academic background as an undergraduate and graduate student. He has committed to developing student-athletes spiritually, mentally, and physically, which will help them to become productive members of our society. Roger Totten was hired in 2017 as the Head Coach of the Men’s Golf Program at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. Since 2017, Totten has continued to transform the program into a powerhouse within the Southwestern Athletics Conference. During the 2018-19 season, Totten lead a remarkable season in which the program made a 100-shot improvement from the previous season in the SWAC Championship Tournament which earned him Co-Coach of the Year. Totten has continued to accelerate the progress of the Men’s Golf Program having six All-Conference players. He’s not only accelerating on the course but in the classroom as well, the 2021 and 2022 seasons the team has had the Highest Men’s GPA in the Athletic Department.  He has earned the SWAC Coach of the Year award three times since 2019. The UAPB Men’s Golf Program was invited to the 2020/2021 PGA Works Collegiate Championship in Jacksonville, FL, and the 2021/2022 PGA Works Collegiate Championship in Philadelphia, PA. Coach Totten was named Coach of the Year four times out the last five years by the conference.  In 2023, the Golden Lions made history and claimed the 2023 Southwestern Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship, which was the first in school history.  Under the leadership of coach Totten UAPB finished on a strong note, winning four of their last six tournaments and became the first team in the SWAC Conference to win the conference championship by 29 strokes and clinched a berth in the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship.  In 2024, UAPB won their second consecutive Southwestern Athletics Conference championship and made their second consecutive appearance in the NCAA Regional.  Tottwas was also named Coach of the Year in the 2024 season, which will make this is fifth consecutive time winning the prestigious award.  Before his time in administration, Totten has had various successes on the football field as an Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator. He has coached 16 players who have gone on to play in the National Football League. University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff - Golf 2024 SWAC Champions NCAA Regional Apperance  2023 SWAC Champions  NCAA Regional Apperance  5x Coach of the Year University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff - Football  2012 SWAC Champions 2000 Ranked #1 Offensive Rushing in the SWAC 1997 Ranked #3 in Total Offense in the SWAC  Alabama State University   2010 Eastern Conference Champions in the SWAC  Alabama A&M  2007 Ranked #1 Offense in the SWAC  Alcorn State University  1998 Ranked #2 Offense in the SWAC  Mississippi Valley State University 2005 Ranked #1 in Red-Zone; Ranked #2 in scoring in the SWAC, the offense averaged 430 yards per game    Totten graduated as an honor student-athlete from Mississippi Valley State University in 1987 with a degree in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. In addition, Totten has also earned Master’s Degrees at Grambling State University (Sport Administration) and Alcorn State University (Secondary Education).  Totten is married to Willette, the couple has three children, Shon(Erin), Ranashia, and Roger, II. They also have two grandchildren, Devyn and Jordan.  Totten is a proud member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated.

Christopher McCoy

Head Coach

Christopher McCoy is entering his seventh year as head coach with University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff men and women’s track and field team, while also implementing the team’s strength and conditioning programs. Since joining the program in the fall of 2011 he has taken the team on another dimension. In 2012 the women’s team finished 5th indoor and 6th outdoor conference while, breaking 4 SWAC records and 2 school records were broken during the indoor and outdoor season. Ninfa Barnard brought home the SWAC Indoor and Outdoor High Point Award on the track after winning 3 events each. The men’s team finished 7th indoor and 5th outdoor, 1 SWAC record and 1 school record was broken and Erick Thomas was named High Point Field Award Winner. The throwers were on fire in 2012 while Terron Amstead qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championship in Eugene, Oregon and finished 14th in the country. The following year in 2012 McCoy lead the women’s team to a top 5 finish indoor and outdoor conference, while 2 more records were broken by Ninfa Barnard as well as the High Point Track Award brought back to UAPB indoor and outdoor. Barnard later in the season qualified for the NCAA West Regional’s in Austin, Texas. The men finished in the top 10 both indoor and outdoor and the 4x400m relay finished 5th. In 2013-2014, UAPB women’s team finished in the top 10 while Ninfa broke the SWAC and school record in the 3000m. Also, sophomore Sireta Roach brought home the gold and with a SWAC and school record in the shot put. UAPB men’s team placed in the top 10 again and Matthew Agard won the mile, 3rd (3000m), 8th (800m), and 5th (5000m). Outdoor the men and women’s team Sireta Roach and Erick Thomas were voted High Point Field Award. The men’s 4x4 shocked the field running their personal best of 3:10.40 as well finished 27th in the West Region.   McCoy came to Pine Bluff, after a three years stint as an assistant track & field coach at Hampton University; coaching women’s team the 400m, 400H, and throwers. 2009-20011 Hampton won 3 MEAC conference championships indoor/outdoor and cross country. McCoy coached the infamous Francena McCorory, who broke the American and NCAA Indoor Record with a time of 50.4.  Before he headed north to Hampton University he was the assistant coach at Bethune- Cookman as well serving as a volunteer strength and conditioning coach for the Wildcats. At Bethune-Cookman McCoy coached sprints, hurdles, jumps, throwing events and multi events, while also designing and implementing the team’s strength and conditioning programs. McCoy began his coaching career at St. Augustine College as a part- time assistant for three years, before he moved on to Murray State where he served as a graduate assistant and coached jumpers and hurdlers in 2002-2003. McCoy returned to St. Augustine from 2003-2004, where he served as assistant track & field coach and assistant strength and conditioning coach. McCoy graduated from St. Augustine’s College in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in Human Performance and Wellness. While at St. Augustine, McCoy primarily ran the 200-meter dash and 400- meter dash, he earned All- CIAA honors six times. He was also named an NCAA Div. II All- American in the 400-meter dash and 4x400 meter relay.  A native of West Memphis, Ark. McCoy is a member of the U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Coaches Association, and he is certified Level I and II coach; he earned the designation in sprints, hurdles, and relays in 2005 and the jumps in 2007. McCoy is also an avid golfer.

Arthur Thomas

Arthur Thomas is a native of Lake Providence, Louisiana, and a graduate of The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff.  Thomas is a former thrower of the UAPB Men's Track and Field Team. Now entering his 3rd year of coaching throws, he has produced SWAC champions in men’s javelin, men’s discus, women’s shot put and also two female and one male conference championship's most outstanding field performer. While coaching at UAPB, Thomas helped Sireta Roach break school and conference records in the shot put while qualifying for the NCAA National Championship Prelims in 2015.

Natoya Baird-Davidson

Assistant Coach

Natoya Baird-Davidson is entering her second season as assistant coach for the UAPB Men's and Women's Cross Country and Track and Field teams. She joined the program after completing a spectacular stint as an assistant coach for the women’s program at her alma mater Coppin State University.    Baird-Davidson was responsible for the hurdles, jumps and combined events athletes in the program. Her ability to lead student-athletes to success is evident in the 12 conference titles, 3 ECAC titles, 5 NCAA East Regional appearances and 1 NCAA All-American accolades attained during her time at Coppin. Additionally, the school record books have been re-written in the jumps, hurdles, pentathlon and heptathlon both indoors and outdoors during her tenure. Her athletes have contributed significantly to team finishes at championships. In 2017 they contributed 34 points to the team total at the conference championships.   Most notable accomplishments by Baird-Davidson at Coppin included guiding Deandra Daniel to NCAA Indoor High Jump Bronze in 2015. Daniel is also the indoor and outdoor record holder in the high jump and a 7-time Conference Champion in the event. Similarly, heptathlete Khemani Roberts also enjoyed major success under Baird-Davidson during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. Roberts was a 3-time conference champion in the combined events in just two seasons under Baird-Davidson. She is also the school record holder and conference record holder in the heptathlon both achieved in 2017. Roberts also has been a 3-time medalist in the high jump at conference championship during that period.   Her charges have also gained international selection and have represented their countries at numerous meets which included the Commonwealth Games 2014 in Scotland, NACAC Under 23 Games 2014 in Canada, Pan American Games 2015 in Canada, the NACAC Open Championships 2015 in Costa Rica, Pan American Combined Events Cup 2016 and the IAAF Combined Events Capital Cup 2017 both in Canada.   As a student-athlete Baird-Davidson competed in the pentathlon, heptathlon, javelin, sprint hurdles, long jump, high jump and triple jump. During her time at Coppin she was able to secure numerous conference accolades including that of MEAC Indoor Champion in the high jump and pentathlon and Outdoor Champion in the heptathlon along with several All-Conference Honors. Baird-Davidson was the Most Outstanding Performer MEAC Outdoor Championships and CSU Female Athlete of the Year in 2009. She is a former record holder for the indoor 60m hurdles, indoor pentathlon, indoor and outdoor high jump, outdoor triple jump and outdoor heptathlon. Records which are now held by student-athletes she has coached.   Hailing from the island of Tobago in the country of Trinidad and Tobago, she has represented her country in the combined events at the NACAC Under 23 Games, Pan American Games, NACAC Open Championships  and Carifta Games. At these games she was a gold medalist in the pentathlon Carifta Games 2005 and bronze medalist in the heptathlon NACAC Open Championships 2007.   Baird-Davidson is a certified USATF Level 1 and Level 2 Jumps coach with additional certification in Sports Performance Level 1 by USAW. She holds a B.S. in Sports Management and is married to Kevin Davidson.

Gabriel Crawford

Assistant Coach

Gabriel Crawford enters his first season as Assistant Coach for the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff Men’s and Women’s Cross Country and Track & Field programs, where he assists in all areas of training, recruiting, and athlete development across multiple event groups. Crawford joins UAPB following an impressive tenure as Head Coach at Highland Community College (Kan.), where he led both the men’s and women’s programs and quickly elevated their competitive profile. Known for his versatility in coaching sprints, hurdles, mid-distance, distance, jumps, and relays, he expanded Highland’s roster from 25 to 55 student-athletes in just two months and guided the men’s program to its highest national ranking in school history at No. 14. His coaching résumé includes 33 JUCO National Qualifiers, 4 JUCO All-Americans, 6 Academic All-Americans, 14 active school record holders, a JUCO All-American 4x100 relay (40.28), and athletes who qualified for the Jamaica Olympic Trials (46.73) and the U20 100m Championships (11.70). Crawford oversaw the breaking of numerous historic program records, including five that stood since 1999, while leading both men’s and women’s relay units to national prominence — highlighted by consecutive Top-10 national finishes in the women’s 4x100 and a Top-8 national finish for the men’s relay. He has coached standout individual performances in the 60m (6.56, #2 all-time in JUCO history and a former #1 national JUCO ranking), 200m indoor (21.57), 400m (46.73 outdoor / 47.48 indoor; Top-6 national finisher), and 800m indoor (1:51.71), and his sprint group achieved a Top-25 world ranking in the 60m among professional competitors — a rare accomplishment at the JUCO level. A Conway, Ark. native, Crawford graduated from Conway High School in 2019 before competing in the 800m, 400m, and 4x400m relay at Mississippi Valley State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation with a 3.82 GPA and was recognized as both MVP and Athlete of the Year. He trained under three-time All-American and former SEC 400m Champion Alonzo Banks and holds a USATF Level 1 coaching certification.
