Amanda Augustus

Head Coach

Augustus led Cal further into postseason play than any previous squad had ever gone; finishing No. 3 in the final ITA rankings as the 2008 NCAA runner-up. Cal duplicated its run to the NCAA championship match in 2009. Last season, she brought the Bears back to the NCAA semifinals for the first time since that year, and Cal wound up ranked No. 2 in the last Oracle/ITA poll. After her Bears reached a third straight NCAA individual final, Augustus also claimed her first Wilson/ITA National Coach of the Year award.   Augustus national coach of the year honor was her fourth major award in four years, including the Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year award in 2015, when she led Cal to the NCAA round of 16, her Pac-12 Coach of the Year honor in 2014, when she led the Bears to their first Pac-12 championship, and her Wilson/ITA Northwest Region Coach of the Year accolade in 2013, when she brought Cal to the NCAA quarterfinals.   Earlier in the 2015-16 season, Augustus earned an honor for her playing career, as she and Amy Jensen were named the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Century. Augustus and Jensen were the first players at the NCAA Division I level to win back-to-back NCAA doubles championships, which they accomplished in 1998 and 1999. Now entering her 10th season in Berkeley, Augustus has compiled a 185-47 coaching record (.797 winning percentage) and produced numerous ITA All-Americans through nine years in charge at her alma mater. The 2015-16 squad produced a litany of firsts for the program the Bears won their first national indoor title and first overall national team title when they claimed the ITA National Team Indoor Championship; freshman Olivia Hauger claimed the Bears first Most Outstanding Player award at national indoors; the Bears earned the programs first No. 1 ranking and were ranked No. 1 most of the season; and Cal posted the best start in school history at 19-0. The Bears wound up with a 23-2 record, which included a 7-1 Pac-12 record and third-place Conference finish.   Cal juniors Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr capped a strong season with a run to the NCAA doubles title match, following in the footsteps of Klara Fabikova and Zsofi Susanyis NCAA doubles runner-up finish in 2015. The Bears current consecutive runner-up finishes include Lynn Chis 2014 NCAA singles run.   In 2015-16, Manasse, Starr and senior Klara Fabikova combined to produce four All-America honors for the Bears. The two juniors who in the fall won their first Riviera/ITA All-American doubles championship became doubles All-Americans for the second straight season, Manasse who reached the NCAA singles round of 16 claimed a singles All-America honor for the second consecutive year and Fabikova who advanced to the NCAA singles round of 32 closed out her college career with her first singles All-America accolade.   Additionally, the ITA named Fabikova the Northwest Regional Senior Player of the Year, tabbed Starr as the regions Player to Watch and named Hauger as the regions Rookie of the Year. Manasse who won the Pac-12 singles championship was named the Pac-12 Singles Player of the Year, Starr and Manasse garnered the Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year honor, and Hauger was the Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer Player of the Year.   In December of 2015, Augustus against coached the U.S. women who for the first time included a Cal player in Manasse to the title at the MasterU BNP Paribas tournament in France. It was the fifth consecutive championship for the USA.   Augustus returned to her alma mater on July 20, 2007, to succeed her college coach,  Jan Brogan , who announced her retirement after 29 years at the helm. A four-time All-American at Cal from 1996-99, Augustus played professionally on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) tour for several years before turning her efforts to coaching. The Manhattan Beach, Calif. native served as head men's and women's tennis coach at Whittier College from 2004-05 and was an assistant at Michigan in 2005-06, before being elevated to the head position for the 2006-07 season. While overseeing the Wolverine program, Augustus guided the team to a 17-8 overall record, 8-2 in the Big Ten for third place. Michigan placed second at the Big Ten team championships and reached the second round of the NCAA tournament, completing its season with a No. 22 national ranking. As a player for the Bears, Augustus earned All-Pac-10 honors in each of her four years, including first-team recognition as a sophomore, junior and senior. She teamed with Jensen to capture their NCAA doubles titles in 1998 and 1999, becoming the first tandem ever to win back-to-back doubles championships. In addition, Augustus and Francesca La'o were NCAA doubles quarterfinalists in 1996. Augustus also earned an invitation to play in the NCAA singles tournament each of her four years at Cal, reaching the quarterfinals as a junior in 1998. During her career, she was ranked as high as fourth nationally in singles. As a senior, Augustus received the Cissy Leary Sportsmanship Award for the ITA Northwest Region, as well as the Gladys Heldman Award for her outstanding combination of athletics and academics. In 1998, she was selected as the Daily Californian's Female Athlete of the Year. After graduating with her degree in economics and a minor in business administration, Augustus turned her attention to the WTA tour and successfully earned invitations to the main draw of all four Grand Slam events - Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open. She achieved world rankings of No. 82 in doubles and No. 304 in singles, and won 20 professional tournaments.
