Kate Murphy

Assistant Coach

Murphy joined the staff. In addition to her daily involvement with the program's backfield, Murphy will also assist her coaching colleagues with recruiting, practice planning, team travel and other administrative tasks. The 2015-16 season is her second at UC Davis. Murphy arrives to Davis from Boston University, her alma mater, where she assisted 33-year head coach Sally Starr last season. "I love this game and cannot wait to share my knowledge and experience to help this team grow. With the construction of the school's new facility, I am excited to help UC Davis field hockey reach its potential and succeed both in the classroom, and on the field," said Murphy. "Kate possesses the hockey IQ, passion and vision to take this program in the right direction," said head coach Tiffany Huisman. "Words cannot convey how excited I am to have her join this staff." Prior to the start of the 2013 season, Murphy was the head coach for the Labrador Hockey Club U-13 boys' team. Based in Queensland, Australia, Murphy handled all administrative responsibilities in addition to her on-field coaching duties. Not only did her team capture a third-place finish in the Gold Coast premiership, three of her players were selected to represent Queensland in this age group. Murphy's Australian experience was her second on the sidelines; while at BU, she also aided in the training of Worcester County United's U-14, U-16 and U-19 indoor and outdoor teams. Of this collection, three teams have captured USA Field Hockey Festival titles with another two advancing to the indoor National Championships. When not on the field instructing players from her eight squads, Murphy organized tournaments, clinics and developed practice curriculums on a weekly basis. Thanks to Murphy's tutelage, three Worcester County United players received All-American recognition, another four inked Division I commitments to the top field hockey programs in the nation and will compete at their respective schools next season. Shrewsbury High School (Mass.) was fortunate to have Murphy as part of its field hockey staff for the 2012 campaign; throughout the four-month season, she organized daily practice plans, ran team fitness trainings and collaborated with other staff members about the squad's structural formation and game strategy. Shrewsbury finished that season as league champions, collected a Central Massachusetts Division I district crown, its first since 2009, and competed in the state championship game for the first time since 2007. That year also marked Murphy's inaugural involvement with USA Field Hockey Futures Program, an elite training experience for high school athletes that represents the start of the Olympic development process. As a certified coach for the Lincoln-Sudbury site, she focused her efforts on the U-14, U-16 an U-19 age groups and further developed their field hockey fundamentals. As a staff member, she also assisted USA Field Hockey with its player evaluations, recommendation and selection process. While attending Boston University as one of its field hockey student-athletes, Murphy began coaching at various camps in New England region. Throughout the last five years, Murphy's influence shaped the coaching curriculum at field hockey camps organized by Nike, Champion (five years), College of the Holy Cross (two), Deerfield College Connection and Northeast Hockey (one). A 2012 graduate who earned a degree in hospitality administration, Murphy was three-year fixture in Coach Starr's lineup and one of only four players to earn a starting spot in her final three years. In her first season as a starter, BU won the '09 America East title-one of two the Terriers captured throughout her four-year tenure as the team also finished the 2011 campaign as regular season co-champions. Also a four-year member of her league's honor roll, Murphy received her first all-conference award in her junior season when America East named her to its 2010 second team. Voted team captain by her peers the following year, she ended her college career with first team all-conference, all-conference tournament and all-region honors. Named MVP by her teammates in 2011, Murphy capped a decorated career by competing in the NCAA's Division I Senior All-Star Game. Murphy's return to organized competition also took place throughout her stint in Australia; besides coaching Labrador Hockey's youth club teams, she also represented the program's Division I women's squad. Not only did her team end its season with an unblemished 25-0-0 mark, one that saw Murphy score eight goals, record 19 assists and earn a start in every game, she collected a bronze medal at the 2013 Queensland Opens Tournament. Based on her quality of play at that event, she was one of 14 players who received a highly coveted invitation to represent Queensland's Super League Squad. Before arriving to Boston, Murphy graduated from Notre Dame Academy in Worcester. A four-year letterwinner and three-year starter, her team earned a Central Massachusetts Conference (CMC) championship all four years, advanced to the state championship game on two occasions and won the title in 2005. This two-time CMC and all-city all-star also led her U-19 Cape Ann Coalition club team to a championship-game victory at the 2006 USA Field Hockey Festival, participated in the USA Field Hockey Futures Program from 2005-08 and twice competed at the organization's National Tournament. "The passion that coach Huisman has for the game is contagious and is exciting to be around," Murphy said. "I love this game, cannot wait to work alongside a group of dedicated student-athletes and a decorated head coach to shape the culture of this program."

Rachel Stauffer

Assistant Coach

She helped run the 2024 skills clinic and 2025 summer camp hosted at UC Davis.  The Aggies ended their 2024 season 1-5 in America East conference games and 4-13 for the entire season. Stauffer helped lead the team to their first post season appearance since 2018. The Aggies also swept a weekend of play against Northeastern (9/6) and Kent State (9/8). Stauffer helped run the 2024 San Jose Day Camp hosted by UC Davis Field Hockey that is open to any and all participants.  The Aggies ended their 2023-2024 season 1-7 in America East conference games and 2-14 for the entire season. Stauffer helped lead them to their first-ever road win against Stanford (9/22) with a 2-1 victory. The Aggies also had a double-overtime thriller against Ken State (9/3) coming out on top with a 5-4 victory.  Former Indiana standout Rachel Stauffer joined UC Davis field hockey's staff on Dec. 9, 2020, after spending the previous two seasons as an assistant coach at Penn, and enters her fourth season with UC Davis field hockey for the 2023-24 academic year.   "I'm honored and grateful to fill this role at UC Davis. I am thankful to head coach Britt Broady for the opportunity and her confidence in me, as well as coaches Colleen Fink and Katelyn O'Brien at Penn for their help in shaping me into the coach and person I am today," said Stauffer.   "I am eager to bring my passion for field hockey and life to Davis; this program is on an upward trajectory and I'm looking forward to continuing this with current student-athletes and coaches."    Added Broady, "We are pleased to welcome Rachel to our staff. As a goal scorer in the Big Ten with honors for her play, she will bring high standards and expertise to our forward line. We have been focused upon our team attack and principles for the past year and I'm excited for Rachel to contribute her knowledge and energy."   In addition to on-field instruction and skill development, Stauffer played an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the Quakers' field hockey program. Not only was she involved with the development of the team's practice plans, she also broke down, coded and organized film sessions for use in individual meetings and scouting opponents.     Responsible for handling every element throughout each road trip, Stauffer also focused her time and efforts during the year on the team's recruiting and fundraising efforts.   Stauffer's knowledge of the game, experience as a student-athlete and coach is why top international technical directors from around the world also invited her to train and instruct elite-level talents throughout her tenure at Penn.   In addition to her duties with the Quakers, Stauffer was an indoor and outdoor head coach for multiple U14-U19 teams, organized clinics, training programs and developed curriculum for Main Line Field Hockey Club (Philadelphia) since 2017.   Working alongside young women who seek an elite education, and a well-rounded student-athlete experience, is a situation familiar to Stauffer ever since she started her coaching career at Colby College in 2016.   On the turf, she strengthened players' fundamentals, taught various tactics and strategies for success through one-on-one sessions. Off it, she assisted academic advisors in helping individuals thrive at a liberal arts institution that is consistently ranked within the top 20 colleges and universities in the nation.   That experience prepared Stauffer for her next coaching opportunity at Swarthmore College — another top-ranked liberal arts institution — as one of its assistant coaches. As was the case at Colby College, she prepared individual and team skill development programs, film sessions, organized the program's recruiting efforts, fundraising outreach and year-wide slate of clinics.   As an Indiana field hockey student-athlete, Stauffer played a key role in the most successful season in program history when the Hoosiers set a new record during her senior season with their Big Ten wins total. That year, the Ephrata, Pennsylvania native was among the team's leaders in three categories: goals, points, and shot percentage.   In addition to receiving academic all-conference honors from Big Ten Conference officials on three occasions, Stauffer also served as Indiana field hockey's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative.   Stauffer graduated from Indiana University's School of Public Health in May of 2016 with a degree in sports communication — print, a certificate in journalism and minor in psychology.
