Mike McGrath
Head Coach
McGrath garnered UAA Coach of the Year accolades in 2007-08 after leading the Maroons to their second-straight UAA championship and NCAA Division III tournament appearance. UChicago, which finished 18-8 overall and 11-3 in conference play, ranked 25th in the final D3hoops.com poll. In 2000-01, McGrath guided the Maroons to their best-ever NCAA Division III finish, as UChicago advanced to the Elite Eight round of the national tournament. McGrath enjoyed a highly-successful debut campaign in 1999-00, as he led the Maroons to a 23-4 record, the UAA title and a NCAA Division III Sweet 16 appearance. Over his career at UChicago, McGrath has been named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Coach of the Year four times 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008. McGrath spent seven years as an assistant coach to Pat Cunningham from 1992-99. During that time, McGrath helped lead the Maroons to an overall record of 107-73 (.594), including an 82-23 mark (.781) from 1995-99. Under Cunningham and McGrath, UChicago garnered two UAA championships and advanced to the NCAA Division III Sweet 16 on two occasions. During McGrath's 24 years as head and assistant coach, UChicago teams have compiled a combined record of 361-251 (.590), won six conference championships, and made six national postseason appearances. McGrath is a 1992 graduate of DePauw University, where he spent three years as a student assistant coach. During his tenure at DePauw, the Tigers advanced to the 1990 NCAA Division III championship game. In 2003, McGrath and the other members of that team were inducted into the DePauw Athletics Hall of Fame. A native of Bartlett, Ill., McGrath earned a master's degree in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in 2004. Mike McGrath

Mike McGrath enters his 27th year as the Head Men's Basketball Coach and his 31st year as a part of the men's basketball program at the University of Chicago in the 2025-26 academic year. A three-time UAA Coach of the Year, McGrath is the University of Chicago’s all-time wins leader with an overall record of 361-272, including a 204-148 mark in University Athletic Association (UAA) play. McGrath has guided UChicago to a NCAA Division III Elite Eight berth and Sweet 16 appearance, as well as four UAA titles. Over his career at UChicago, McGrath has been named Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) Coach of the Year five times – 2000, 2001, 2007, 2008, and 2025. The UChicago men’s basketball team finished the 2024–25 season with a 16–10 record and a 9–5 mark in the UAA, earning their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2008. Thomas Kurowski was named First Team All-UAA, while Joe Berry earned Second Team honors.The Maroons also had a total of three players named to the CSC Academic All-District Team. He has also served as a member of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Committee and twice as a member of the Regional advisory Committee for the Midwest - the groups responsible for selecting and bracketing for the National Championship. Connor Ericksen-Dunn
Assistant Coach
Connor Ericksen-Dunn enters his third year as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Chicago in the 2025-26 academic year. Prior to arriving at UChicago, Ericksen-Dunn coached at Huron High School in Ann Arbor, Michigan, from 2021-23. His duties included coaching the freshman level and assisting the varsity team. During his time at Huron, Ericksen-Dunn helped lead the freshmen team to a 14-1 record and assisted in leading the varsity squad to back-to-back Class A Southeastern Conference champion-ships, a district championship, regional championship, and an Elite Eight appearance. Ericksen-Dunn graduated from the University of Michigan in 2022 receiving a bachelor's degree in Sports Management with a minor in Education.

Bobby Savich
Assistant Coach
Bobby Savich enters his second year as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Chicago in the 2025-26 academic year. Savich arrives at Chicago following three seasons (2019-2022) at Bosco Institute (IN) as an assistant coach for their Post Grad program. At Bosco, his duties included individual skill development, game plan preparation, opponent scouting, and statistical analysis. Prior to Bosco Institute, Savich spent 2010-2013 and 2015-2019 on staff at Lincoln-Way East School in Frank-fort, Illinois. Savich helped guide the Griffins to their first 20-win campaign in 2016-2017, a then-school record 23 wins in 2017-2018, and the school's first boys' basketball IHSA Regional title. Savich is a 2010 graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and holds a bachelor's degree in broadcast journalism.

Josh Steinberg
Assistant Coach
Steinberg joins the coaching staff this year as a graduate assistant after playing and coaching at Calvin University. While playing (21-23), his team won a conference title and advanced to the Sweet 16. Following his collegiate playing days, Steinberg transitioned to coaching. He has served as a Student Assistant Coach for the Men's Basketball team at Calvin University for two years winning two more conference championships and one Elite 8 finish. A high point of his playing career came when he was selected to represent Team USA at the 2023 Pan American Maccabi Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Steinberg competed in the 3x3 men's basketball tournament, where his team won the gold medal and he was selected as tournament MVP. His coaching experience also extends to the international stage, where he coached the 18U USA Men's basketball team to gold at the 2024 European Youth Maccabi Games (London, UK). He graduated from Calvin University in 2025 with a bachelors in Marketing and PPE (Politics, Philosophy, & Economics). He currently is a student at the Booth School of Business earning a Masters in Management.

Mike Mailhot
Assistant Coach
Mike Mailhot enters his seventh year as the Assistant Men's Basketball Coach at the University of Chicago in the 2025-26 academic year. During the 2024–25 campaign, Mailhot helped guide the Maroons back to the NCAA Tournament and to a third-place finish in the University Athletic Association (UAA). Chicago closed the season ranked No. 23 nationally in the final D3hoops.com poll. Mailhot came to Chicago following a one-year stint as an assistant coach at Muhlenberg College. At Muhlenberg, Mailhot served as the recruiting coordinator, scouted all opponents, and ran daily individual instruction. Before his time at Muhlenberg, Mailhot spent three highly successful seasons as an assistant coach at Nichols College. The Bison compiled a 74–14 record during his tenure, captured three straight Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) regular-season titles, and earned the first national Top-25 ranking in program history. As the offensive coordinator in 2016–17 and 2017–18, Mailhot helped Nichols win back-to-back CCC Tournament Championships and advance to the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in 2017—the first NCAA appearance in program history. He coached two All-Americans, two CCC Players of the year, eight CCC All-Conference Selections, and the conference’s all-time leading scorer. Mailhot is a 2013 graduate of Emmanuel College, where he was a four-year starter and a two-year captain for the men’s basketball program. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business management. He went on to earn his master's degree in business administration from Nichols in 2018. Following his graduation, Mailhot stayed on at Emmanuel as an assistant Coach for both the men’s and women’s teams. He also served as an assistant coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2014-15.

Mike Mailhot joined UChicago men's basketball as an assistant coach during the 2019-20 season. Mailhot came to the Hyde Park campus following a one-year stint as assistant coach for fellow NCAA Division III institution Muhlenberg College. At Muhlenberg, Mailhot scouted all opponents, ran daily individual instruction and served as the recruiting coordinator. Prior to Muhlenberg, Mailhot served as an assistant coach at Nichols College. During his three seasons, Nichols posted a 74-14 record and earned the first top 25 ranking in program history in 2017-18. He oversaw individual player development, played a key role in developing and implementing game plans for opponents, as well as daily practice plans. Mailhot served as the offensive coordinator for the ninth and 12th-ranked scoring offenses in the country in 2016-17 and 2017-18. During those two seasons, Nichols won back-to-back Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament Championships, and made the NCAA Tournament Round of 32 in 2016-17 the first NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. Mailhot was instrumental in recruiting the class of Rookie of the Year and three-time First Team All-Conference selection DeAnte Bruton, as well as Second Team All-Conference selection Jerome Cunningham. Mailhot is a 2013 graduate of Emmanuel College, where he played four years for the men's basketball program and was a two-year team captain. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in business management. He went on to earn his master's degree in business administration from Nichols in 2018. Following his graduation, Mailhot stayed on at Emmanuel as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's teams, helping the women win the Great Northeast Athletic Conference regular-season title. Mailhot also served as an assistant coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy in 2014-15.
