Matt Barber

Assistant Coach

Barber's track and field team placed five athletes on the All-Conference Teams for top three finishes at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championships. Overall, seven different accolades were awarded, with Prince Giadolor capturing three of them. Barber led the men's side to fourth and the women's team finished fifth. Part of the the success for the men's team was SCAC Newcomer of the Year, Giadolor, capturing the program's first Individual SCAC Championship in the 100 Meters. Giadolor also earned All-Conference Accolades in the 200 Meters and 4x100 Meter Relay. Ryan McAnany rounded out the group of postseason honors in the 1500 Meters. Dominic Del Curto, Barton Holdridge, and Thomas Pieirck joined Giadolor in the 4x100m, broke the school record four straight meets. The most recent was at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA). On the women's side in track and field, Barber coached Katie McIntyre who ranked third at the SCAC Championships in the 400 Meters. She also qualified at the SCAC Championship finals in the 100 Meter and 200 Meter events. At the USCAA Championships, McIntyre captured first in the 200m and 400m, while Bridget Kennedy won in the 3000 Meters Steeplechase. Kennedy's first place time of 12:25.34 set an all-time fastest in USCAA Championship history for that event. Ellen Jennings, Cora Keil, McIntyre, and Audrey Zohorsky teamed up for a gold medal in the 4x100 Meter Relay. Those were the first championships in the program since 2004. Barber's teams this past spring would set 10 school records - five on both sides - including a mark in the men's hammer throw that was held since 1908.  In 2015,Barber led the men's and women's track and field programs for Dallas to impressive individual times. Two records were broken on the men's side, with sophomore Kevin Doherty eclipsing his old record from the previous year on the 3,000 Meter Steeplechase at the conference championships. McAnany, who was the All-SCAC Third Team in the 1500 Meter, broke a historic mark in the program with a 9:58 on the two mile.  Four runners received All-SCAC Third Team on the 4x100 Meter, which included: senior Michelle DeRoche, senior Amy Sullivan, sophomore Katie McIntyre, and freshman Helen Onyenso. Records achieved by the women's track and field squad with Barber overseeing began with Myers with a 12:24.05 on the Two Mile at the East Texas Time Trials. Sophomore Lizzie Depew hit a 16.19 second time in the 100 Meter Hurdles at the Marc Randle Classic. Two more records were hit at the Walt Disney World Track and Field Open. Senior Sarah Valdovinos, Depew, senior Danielle Pajak, and senior Colleen Slattery ran a 4:45.27 in the Sprint Medley; while Myers, Pajak, junior Emma Polefko, and Slattery raced for a 22:27.77 in the 4x1500 Meter Relay.    A native of Fort Worth, Texas, Barber was a two-year letterwinner (2012-13) for the UD men's track & field team. With the Navy and White competing as members of the SCAC, Barber earned two All-SCAC honors -- 200-Meter Dash and 400-Meter Dash -- in his junior year, and four -- 4x100-Meter Relay, 4x400-Meter Relay, 200-Meter Dash and 400-Meter Dash -- in his senior year. These accomplishments took place at the SCAC Men's Track & Field Championships. He set school records on the individual level in the 200-Meter Dash (22.41) and 400-Meter Dash (50.07). Additionally, Barber helped navigate the Crusaders to a school-record time in the 4x100-Meter Relay (44.63), 4x800-Meter Relay (8:41.99) and Distance Medley Relay (10:59.52). Active in campus life, Barber was also a member of Crusaders for Kids. He recruited for the organization at university social events, and provided companionship to hospitalized children. In May 2013, Barber -- who landed on the 2013 Men's Track & Field Spring Student-Athlete Academic Honor Roll -- obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Theology from UD. Barber went on to teach Theology and serve as a track & field assistant coach at John Paul II High School (Plano, Texas). During the 2013-14 academic-year, Barber developed and delivered curricular content to between 13-30 students at a time. He administered assessments, evaluated results, documented student progress, and also conferenced with administrators, parents and students.  Barber coached the Cardinals in long-distance running, jumps, relays and sprints, advising student-athletes in the areas of form and technique. Barber holds a USA Track & Field Level I (Coach) designation, and is AED, CPR and First Aid certified.

Matt Grahn

Coach

Grahn spent six seasons as a volunteer assistant coach on Jarred Samples' staff at the University of Dallas. His main duties included coordination of recruiting and post player development. Grahn aided in the recruitment and development of 2011 Association of Division-III Independents' (AD3I) Rookie of the Year and United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) All-American post player, Ross Davidson. Grahn helped lead Dallas to a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Tournament appearance in 2011-12, Dallas' first season in the league. From 2007-2010, Grahn was an assistant coach at Concordia University (Texas), where he was instrumental in orchestrating an offense which led the American Southwest Conference (ASC) in scoring all three years (top 12 in NCAA-III). Grahn helped Concordia reach the ASC Conference Tournament all three years -- the team finished as a runner-up in 2008. Additionally, Grahn mentored Brad Walker, whom was ASC Player of the Year 2010, NABC Small College Player of the Year, and All-Region First Team. Before joining Stan Bonewitz at Concordia, Grahn spent three of the previous four seasons at Texas Lutheran University working under Tom Oswald. Known for their tough defense and post play, Grahn helped the Bulldogs to lead the ASC in scoring defense in 2004 and 2005, as well as aid in the development of two-time All-American post player and Josten's Award Nominee, Tommy Stolhandske, and 2007 ASC Freshman of the Year, J.C. Herebia. The 2005-06 season took Grahn to NCAA Division I McNeese State University as an assistant coach. The Cowboys led the Southland Conference in steals per game and were seventh in the nation in that category. Grahn also aided the Cowboys in obtaining the highest GPA in six seasons. Grahn spent the 2002-03 as an assistant under J.T. Locklear at Seminole State College in Oklahoma. He helped recruit and sign Michael Neal, who ended up finishing his playing career at the University of Oklahoma. From 2000-2002, Grahn worked as an assistant for Ray Giacoletti at Eastern Washington University (EWU). Grahn worked with the post players, while completing his undergraduate degree. The 1999-2000 season at Moscow (Idaho) High School was Grahns first experience as a head coach. The Bears finished 14-10 and second in Idaho's District 1/2. Grahn's team was three points shy of a state playoff berth to eventual state tournament finalist, Timberline. From 1994-2000, Grahn served in numerous capacities from video coordinator to director of basketball operations at Washington State University (WSU). During his time at WSU, Grahn worked for head coach Kevin Eastman. The Cougars advanced the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) quarterfinals in 1995, while leading the country in field goal percentage. In 1996, WSU made it the second round of the NIT. In 2011, Grahn became a certified trainer for the Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA). PCA is a nonprofit organization founded at Stanford University with the mission to transform youth sports so sports can transform youth. PCA was created to transform the culture of youth sports to give all young athletes the opportunity for a positive, character-building experience. Grahn graduated from Olympic High School in Silverdale, Wash., where he earned Most Inspirational honors his senior year. Grahn was married in May 2007 to the former Katheryne Hickman and the two have a daughter, Harleigh, born early in 2012.
