Kevin Gilhuly

Associate Head Coach

Kevin Gilhuly is in his ninth season on the University of Dayton track and field staff and shared the 2026 Atlantic 10 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Coach of the Year honor with associate head coach Aaron Gordon after Dayton captured the program's first-ever A-10 outdoor team championship in Fairfax, Va., this May. Gilhuly joined the Flyers as throws coach in November of 2017 and has since been elevated to Associate Head Track and Field Coach. He oversees all five throwing events — shot put, weight throw, discus, hammer and javelin — and serves as the primary recruiter for the throws group. Under Gilhuly's direction, Dayton's throws program has become one of the most consistent producers of conference championships and all-time top performances in the Atlantic 10. His throwers have won at least eight individual A-10 titles since 2018, populated the program's all-time Top 5 lists across every throwing event, broken school records in the outdoor javelin and the outdoor shot put, and produced the first two Flyers to qualify for the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Team Trials. The headline of Gilhuly's tenure has been Casey Bogues, a redshirt senior javelin thrower from Red Bank, N.J., who is a four-time Atlantic 10 javelin champion (2021, 2023, 2024, 2025), the school-record holder at 57.41 meters, and one of only two Flyers ever to qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships twice. Bogues earned NCAA Second Team All-America honors as a freshman in 2021 after throwing 53.39 meters at the NCAA Championships, returned to the meet in 2024 to earn Honorable Mention All-America honors, and qualified for the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Team Trials in both 2021 and 2024, finishing eighth in the javelin final at the 2024 Trials. She has also been a 2020-21 CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team selection and a multi-year USTFCCCA Collegiate All-Academic and Atlantic 10 All-Academic honoree. Gilhuly also coached former UD volunteer assistant Chantae McMillan to a javelin qualifying mark for the 2021 Olympic Trials. The senior class signed in 2022 — Rebekah Conrad, Luisa Himmler, Daniela Peralta, Anna Yater and Jillian Yates — has driven the throws group's growth into Gilhuly's most decorated period at Dayton. Conrad, a native of Butler, Ohio, was the meet-high individual scorer at the 2026 A-10 Outdoor Championships with 26 points, winning the shot put (13.76m PR) and the discus (47.41m PR, fifth all-time at UD) and taking bronze in the hammer throw (56.35m). Yater finished second in the shot put at the same meet (13.28m PR). Senior Maggie Hofner, who entered the 2026 postseason ranked fourth in the A-10 in the outdoor discus (47.37m), and Conrad were Dayton's representatives at the Sycamore Open in pursuit of NCAA East Regional qualification. Peralta and Bogues represented the Flyers in the javelin at the 2025 Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Earlier in Gilhuly's tenure, Jenni Rossi '18 was a two-time Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Field Performer and set Dayton's school record in the outdoor shot put. Lily Cook '18 was the 2018 Atlantic 10 outdoor javelin champion and an NCAA East Preliminary qualifier. Alyssa Ramstetter '19 won A-10 gold in the hammer throw at the 2019 outdoor championships, and Taylor Flight was a two-time all-conference performer at the indoor championships in 2019 and 2020. A native of Wallingford, Conn., Gilhuly came to Dayton from Sacred Heart University, where he helped his teams to the Northeast Conference Indoor and Outdoor Championships in 2015-16 and 2016-17, coached two NCAA East Regional qualifiers in the hammer and javelin, and was part of the 2016 and 2017 NEC Coaching Staff of the Year. Prior to Sacred Heart, Gilhuly was at Southern Connecticut State University, where he guided the men's and women's programs to the 2015 Northeast-10 Conference Championship as well as a program-first NEICAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championship. He produced NCAA Division II All-Americans in the men's shot put, discus and hammer there, along with 11 All-NEICAA honors. Gilhuly graduated from Monmouth University with a B.A. in 2013 and an M.S. in 2014. As a Hawk, he was a two-time USTFCCCA Division I All-Academic Team selection, a two-time NCAA Division I East Regional Qualifier in the javelin, a 2nd-Team All-NEC honoree, a member of three indoor and outdoor team conference championships, and team captain for both the 2013-14 indoor and outdoor seasons. He holds multiple USTFCCCA certifications, including the Throwing Event Specialist and Multi-Event Specialist credentials, a USATF Level One Coach, a USA Weightlifting Certified Coach and a Certified Strength and Condition Specialist (CSCS) through the NSCA.

Brandan Bettenhausen

Assistant Coach

Bettenhausen enters his fourth season with the University of Dayton track and field coaching staff in 2015-2016. He specializes in coaching the throws.   Bettenhausen has had a huge impact on the Flyers throws program. After inheriting a program with only two throwers, the group has quickly transformed into the most dominate group in the Atlantic 10 Conference. In just three years, they have had 11 Atlantic 10 Champions, 26 conference scorers, and the reigning A-10 Indoor and Outdoor Most Outstanding Field Perfomer in Jenni Rossi. The Dayton history book has also seen many changes with nine new performances that rank top five in school history.   Under Bettenhausens guidance, Dayton throwers have started receiving great recognition for their accomplishments. This past year, Jenni Rossi swept the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships in the shot put, hammer, and discus with three more gold medals to go along with two golds from the indoor meet. Sonya Napariu added a silver indoor and a bronze outdoors. Freshman Jessica Birdsong put herself in the top five all-time at Dayton in the javelin as well. In 2015, standout freshman Erin Reese was named the A-10 Conferences Most Outstanding Rookie Performer at both the indoor and outdoor championships. Nationally, Aly Weeman represented the Flyers twice at the NCAA East Preliminary Championships in the hammer throw and was honored both years as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Team member.   Bettenhausen came to Dayton after spending one year at Western State Colorado University. There he was the mens and womens throws coach. Bettenhausen coached a NCAA Division II provisional qualifier, an All-Region performer, an All-RMAC Academic recipient, two conference champions, and eight Western State Top 10 All-Time performances. Western State's men's and women's teams finished fifth and 19th, respectively, in the nation that season. Prior to his time in Colorado, Bettenhausen coached as a volunteer at his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin. In his stint with the Badgers, he helped oversee All-Americans, US Olympic Trials qualifiers, indoor and outdoor national qualifiers, eight school records, and a Big Ten Conference team championship. A 2011 graduate of Wisconsin, Bettenhausen was a standout performer for the Badgers while earning his degree in Mechanical Engineering. Bettenhausen is also a USTFCCCA certified technical coach, and C.S.C.S. certified strength and conditioning coach.

Sarah Haveman

Coach

Haveman has been the Flyers head womens cross country coach for the past four seasons and was recently named Director of Women's Track & Field and Cross Country in the spring of 2016. Going into her fourth year at Dayton, Haveman has already raised the standard for the Flyers in such a short period of time. She has helped guide a number of individuals to record-breaking achievements. This past track and field season, Dayton had a historic year with 99 personal bests during the indoor season and another 82 during the outdoor campaign. UD had 13 new Top 5 all-time marks indoor and 13 more outdoors. The Flyers finished sixth at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships and fourth at the outdoor championships. New school records were set in the 60m hurdles indoor and 100m hurdles outdoor by Jordan Hoffman and the heptathlon by Sarah Sepanski. The 4x100m relay team consisting of Sepanski, Hoffman, Paige Yaeger, and Jenea Adams also set a new Dayton best. Jenni Rossi earned A-10 Most Outstanding Field Performer after sweeping the shot put, hammer, and discus during the indoor and outdoor seasons. Taylor Vernot picked up A-10 Rookie Performer of the Year honors after winning the 5000m outdoors. This came after a cross country season in the fall of 2015 that had a pair of All-Conference performers in Emily Leonard and Taylor Vernot (first freshman in school history). The team also was named one of the USTFCCCA Scholar Teams of the Year yet again. Nine different times from the 2015 season were good enough for the Top 25 all-time lists at Dayton, including a school record in the 6K by Leonard. In 2015, Haveman coached numerous student athletes to record breaking achievements, including multiple school records (VanHook, 600m; 4x800m Relay; Cargill, 3000m Steeplechase),14 Top 5 performances, and  Nicole Cargill qualifying for the NCAA First Round meet. Outside of competition, the Flyers had multiple academic awards as a team and individually.  The team was named a USTFCCCA Division 1 Scholar team while carrying the highest GPA in the Atlantic 10 Conference and Lizzie Gleason was an Academic All-District and Academic All-Conference selection and Nicole Cargill was named to the USTFCCCA  All Academic Women's Track and Field Team. In 2013, Nicole Cargill set records in both the 1000M event and the steeplechase, while Olivia Albers advanced to the USA Junior Nationals event after her first season at UD, where she finished fifth. Haveman continues to push the distance student-athletes academically and athletically. Haveman came to Dayton from Purdue University, where she was an assistant in track and cross country since the winter of 2011. She had full responsibility for the distance group and her runners showed great improvement over her five competitive seasons (2011 indoor, outdoor and cross country, and 2012 indoor and outdoor) with them. Four runners moved into the Purdue top five all-time in the events, with two of them qualifying for the NCAA First Round meet in Jacksonville, Fla. A fine collegiate runner in her own right, Haveman competed for the Purdue in cross country and track and field from 2006-10. As a senior, she qualified for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She made huge strides throughout the year, taking third place at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships at Indiana University, placing fifth at the NCAA Championship East Preliminary Rounds and breaking the Purdue record to qualify for finals at the NCAA National Championship meet. A six-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a member of the USTFCCCA national all-academic team, Haveman received her bachelor's degree in elementary education from Purdue in 2010. She was named Purdues Distinguished Scholar-Athlete and the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner as a senior. She is USTFCCCA certified in Strength and Conditioning. Haveman resides in Miamisburg, Ohio with her husband Brandon and daughter Charlotte.
