John Andrews

Head Coach

In his first 18 months as the head coach of the Purple Aces men's and women's golf teams, John Andrews made history.  He coached the women to their first-ever Missouri Valley Conference team championship in 2021 before leading the team to its second-best MVC finish in 2022. The 2021 MVC Women's Golf Coach of the Year (which was split with former UE head coach Jim Hamilton) directed the ladies to an unforgettable triumph.  After leading the way for the majority of the conference tournament, the teams faced a significant snowstorm on the final day.  With the snowfall at its heaviest, Evansville and Northern Iowa dueled in a playoff hole to decide the championship.  UE won in dominating fashion behind individual champion Sophia Rohleder and advanced to play in the Columbus, Ohio Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Success continued for Andrews and both of his squads in 2023.  As a team, the Aces tied for second place at the MVC Championship while freshman Kate Petrova won a 2-hole playoff to clinch the individual crown.  Petrova was named the league's Newcomer of the Year while earning a spot on the All-Tournament Team.  UE's men also enjoyed an excellent showing in the conference championship, coming home in 7th place, just one spot behind a tie for 5th. Andrews was named the head golf coach at the University of Evansville on November 2, 2020.  Andrews joins the UE program after serving in a similar capacity at IUPUI from 1998 through 2017.  In his time with the Jaguars, Andrews directed the team to seven NCAA Regional appearances.  A 3-time conference coach of the year honoree, Andrews oversaw three conference championships at IUPUI.   He brings a long history of directing his student-athletes to careers at the professional level.  Andrews has directed a slate of current professional players who include: Michael Davan, Jose Pablo Segurola, Santiago Ruiz, Cole Adams and Aneta Abrahamova.  IUPUI players who have completed their professional careers feature: Adam Darrow, Kristi O’Brien Moster and Rob van de Vin while Rylan Porter and Sarah Poitras are current PGA members.   After joining the Jaguar program as head coach in 1998, Andrews found success shortly after, leading the men’s team to the Mid-Continent Conference Championship in 2002 while garnering his first Coach of the Year honor.  His program accomplished both feats three years later, earning another league crown while being named the top coach in the conference.   While the Mid-Continent Conference rebranded as the Summit League in 2007, Andrews found similar success in 2012, helping his team win another conference championship in a season that culminated in his third Coach of the Year honor.  Andrews’ NCAA Regional appearances (with either team or individual) came in 2002, 2005, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.  In regular season action, he saw his teams combine for 34 tournament championships including a remarkable total of eight wins in the 2011-12 campaign while posting the best win/loss percentage in the nation.  In the first round of the 2012 Summit League Tournament, his team shot a 20-under par for the lowest Division I round of the entire season.   Individual players earned five conference medalist titles under his watch and that success translated into even higher numbers in the classroom.  Over the course of his tenure at IUPUI, Andrews had 27 golfers earn Academic All-America Scholar recognition, 127 student-athletes recognized with Academic All-Conference accolades and 308 earn a spot on the Academic Advisors List.   He has been a PGA member since 1995 and was the PGA Teaching Professional at Saddlebrook Golf Club in Indianapolis from 1996 through 1999.  His playing career spanned from a junior career all the way through the professional ranks.    His professional career saw him spend time in the PGA Tour School Stage 2, South African PGA Tour and Tour del Pacifico, which is the South American Tour.  He was medalist in a PGA Tour Qualifying event in South Africa while taking top honors in the PGA Tournament Series.  He is also an Indianapolis Open Champion.   Andrews attended Indiana University where he was the team captain of the men’s golf squad.  A 3-time US Amateur participant – Andrews earned two medalist honors while advancing to the quarterfinals in the Western Amateur.  Prior to his college career, Andrews was a State High School Champion, a 3-time American Junior Golf Association All-American and the Indiana State Junior Medalist.  He participated in two US Junior Amateurs.

Jim Hamilton

Assistant Coach

Hamilton has brought energy and success to the University of Evansville men's and women's golf programs since his arrival in 2002. Not surprisingly, Hamilton was chosen in 2006 by the Indiana PGA as one of the state's top 10 golf instructors. Hamilton has built the program into a force in the Missouri Valley Conference on both the men's and women's sides and it culminated in great 2015-16 seasons for the men and women.  Since her arrival to UE in 2013, Kayla Katterhenry has shattered the program record book.  The Newburgh, Ind. product won four events in 2015-16 and helped the women take the team championship at the Charles Braun Intercollegiate.  Katterhenry finished in second place at the 2016 MVC Championship and tied the championship mark for the lowest round in its history - a 67.  She went on to finish second in the tournament.  On the men's side, the Purple Aces picked up a pair of second-place team finishes to open up the spring.  Rick Voyvodic was the top performer in 2015-16, culminating in a victory at the Butler Invitational in Florida.  He took fourth place in the MVC Championship while Tyler Gray came home in 9th.  As a team, UE took 6th place, marking the 9th season in a row the program has recorded a top six finish in the event. He guided 2014 graduate Cathy Doyle to the second-lowest stroke average in program history.  Originally a women's basketball player, he transformed Doyle into one of the top golfers in the MVC.  He also helped Kayla Katterhenry to her third medalist honor in just two seasons. The men's team had one of its best seasons as members of the MVC, coming home in fourth place at the 2015 MVC Championship.  The team finished just two strokes shy of second place in the event.  He coached the men to a pair of victories in the spring of 2014 (Don Benbow Intercollegiate and Bradley Invitational).  He also saw Alex Turner and Quinn Vilneff turn in two of the top seasons in program history.  Turner finished the season with the second-lowest average in the MVC while Vilneff garnered just the second Elite 18 award for UE in 2013.  Both made the MVC Scholar-Athlete Team in 2014. His success helped to bring in talented area native Kayla Katterhenry.  In her inaugural season with the Purple Aces, she garnered MVC Newcomer of the Year honors on the strength of a 76.08 stroke average.  Her average was the best in UE history.  She was medalist in two events (Saluki Invitational and Bradley Invitational) and was named the MVC Women's Golfer of the Week on four occasions. A certified PGA Professional, and former co-owner of Hamilton Golf Course in Evansville, Jim has carried on the Hamilton name that is synonymous with golf. He is the son of legendary Bob Hamilton, Ryder Cup team member and champion of the 1944 PGA Championship. Jim is an outstanding golfer himself, having won the Evansville city tourney twice, the Tri-State Junior Championship three times, and the Indiana Junior Championship once. Jim was a founder of the Evansville Junior Golf Association. Hamiltons teaching skills are reflected in the teams he coaches at UE. The Aces' men rose in the Missouri Valley Conference Championship standings from eighth to seventh to fifth in Hamiltons first three years. In the fall of 2010, his men's team won both the Butler Fall Invitational and the Dayton Invitational. In 2012, the UE men earned their third Golf Coaches Association of America honor for their academic performance.  His team posted a 3.416 GPA and was just one of 79 DI programs to earn the honor.  Aside from the team honors, two of his players earned a pair of academic honors as Michael Sainz and Griffin Wood earned MVC Scholar-Athlete honors while being named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars. The womens team has produced its top three MVC finishes under Hamiltons direction, and recently earned the All-Scholar Team award from the National Golf Coaches Association.  In addition, Maggie Wood in 2011 was chosen as the Dettwiler Scholarship recipient, given annually to one University of Evansville female athlete who possesses the characteristics of team spirit, hard work and leadership that made Meg Dettwiler an important figure in the Evansville community. His leadership has assisted the women's team in becoming more competitive each and every year.  In the spring of 2012, freshman Cathy Doyle notched a pair of individual second-place outings as the Aces also took second on the team side at the Butler Invitational and the Butler Invitational.  The team has also done exceptional work on the academic side as they earned Public Recognition Awards from the NCAA for their classwork in each of the last three seasons. Im proud of how hard the players on both teams have worked, Hamilton says. They have goals, and they know it takes dedication to achieve them. We have built a good foundation that will help us compete for a Missouri Valley Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament bid for both the mens and womens teams. You do that by recruiting people who really have a desire to succeed academically and athletically.
