Kallen Miyataki
Head Coach
Miyataki has been appointed University of Hawaii at Hilo Head Baseball Coach as of September 5, 2014 announced UH Hilo interim-Athletic Director Tim Moore. Kallens experience in the Hilo community will prove valuable in the long-run in developing our baseball program, Moore said. Coach Miyataki maintains impressive recruiting ties in Hawai`i, West Coast, and Alaska and is well respected in the collegiate baseball community. Miyatakis credentials speak for itself in his involvement in Hawaii baseball from managing the Hilo Boys and Girls Clubs RBI Baseball Junior Division to interim-head coach at UH Hilo this past season. This will be his third fitting in a UH Hilo coachs uniform following a 3-year period as the associate head coach (2004-06) and 14-year stint as assistant coach (1988-2001). He was successful in implementing a new, aggressive style of baseball utilizing the hit and run and bunting in order to capitalize on the smaller, faster players he inherited in his year as interim head coach Moore said. During his absence from UH Hilo, he remained active in the baseball community coaching American Japanese Association Adult Baseball (2001-04), RBI Youth Baseball (2012, 20010, 2006-09), Island Movers semi-pro summer league (1999-00) and Hawaii Youth League (1989). He has also been a baseball consultant since 2001 and instructor at numerous baseball clinics state-wide. His coaching career began as an assistant at Moanaloa High School (HI) before a graduate assistant position at the University of Hawaii (1985-87) took Miyataki to the collegiate level. He served one year as an assistant coach (1988) before joining former University of Hawaii at Hilo Baseball Coach Joey Estrellas staff. Coach Miyataki was a standout student athlete as Team Captain and most valuable player for the UH Hilo Baseball Team (catcher) in 1983. Miyataki earned his bachelor of education degree in secondary physical education from the University of Hawaii in 1985. Miyataki and his wife, Tina, are the parents of daughters Tasha and Kassie and live in Keaau.
