In 16 seasons as head coach, Charlie Wade has turned the University of Hawai‘i men’s volleyball program into a national contender including back-to-back NCAA Champions in 2021 and '22. UH has made seven NCAA Tournament trips in the past decade under Wade, who also guided the Warriors to Big West Tournament titles in 2019, '22, '23, and '25. Won four Big West Championship tournament titles and two Big West regular season titles. Guided Hawai‘i to four consecutive NCAA title matches from 2019-23, a first for any school since the 1990s. Two-time Big West Coach of the Year (2023 & '25) Directed UH to back-to-back NCAA titles in 2021 and '22, the latter of which was a straight-set win over rival Long Beach State in Los Angeles, Calif. Won the program's first national title in 2021 with a convincing straight-set win over BYU in the finals in Columbus, Ohio. UH finished the 2021 season with a 17-1 mark and its first undefeated conference record with a 10-0 mark in Big West play. Led UH to five of the six winningest seasons in program history, including a program-record 29 wins in 2023. Directed Hawai‘i to four consecutive 20-win season from 2022-25, a first in program history, and seven 20-win season all-time. Guided UH to postseason play 12 times with trips to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and Big West Conference championship matches three consecutive seasons (2017-19), the latter of which resulted in the program's first-ever conference title. In 2019, coached the program’s first conference champion after UH defeated Long Beach State in five-sets to capture the Big West crown and earned the program's first automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. Hawai‘i set an NCAA record with a 74-set win streak in 2019, obliterating the previous mark of 32 and recorded a new program-record with a 25-match win streak. The 2022 and '23 teams also won 25 straight matches and set a new program-record 29-match home win streak. In 2015, he directed the Warriors to their first NCAA Tournament berth in 13 years as UH finished with a 24-7 mark – its best since 2003. The Warriors were runner-up in the MPSF standings (18-4) while ascending to the No. 1 ranking for five weeks for the first time since 2004. The 2017 squad posted a 27-6 mark and advanced to the national semifinals for the first time since time since 2002. Recruited some of collegiate volleyball’s best international players – two-time All-American Jonas Umlauft of Germany, who led the nation in kills twice; three-time All-American Stijn van Tilburg of the Netherlands, three-time All-American and 2021 AVCA and VolleyballMag.com Player of the Year Rado Parapunov of Bulgaria, and three-time All-American and 2023 AVCA Player of the Year Jakob Thelle. Lured several of the state’s top recruits, including Punahou’s Kupono Fey and Moanalua High’s Kolby Kanetake and Austin Mautatia and more recently ‘Iolani's Cole Hogland and Punahou's Alaka‘i Todd. King Kekaulike High's Colton Cowell emerged as one of the nation's top outside hitters under Wade's tutelage. A total of 27 student-athletes have received All-American honors under his tenure - Jonas Umlauft, Josh Walker, Brook Sedore, Taylor Averill, Jennings Franciskovic, Sinisa Zarkovic, Kolby Kanetake, Stijn van Tilburg, Larry Tuileta, Hendrik Mol, Joe Worsley, Patrick Gasman, Rado Parapunov, Gage Worsley, Colton Cowell, Jakob Thelle, Spyros Chakas, Guilherme Voss, Dimitrios Mouchlias, Chaz Galloway, Brett Sheward, Alaka‘i Todd, Tread Rosenthal, ‘Eleu Choy, Kurt Rosenthal, Adrien Roure, and Kristian Titriyski. Parapunov and Thelle won multiple conference player of the year honors (Parapunov - 2020 & 2021, Thelle - 2022 & 2023). Three players earned Academic All-America honors (Jonas Umlauft-2011, Stijn van Tilburg-2019, and Jakob Thelle-2022 & 2023) and two assistant coaches received AVCA National Assistant Coach of the Year honors (Josh Walker-2019 and Milan Zarkovic-2020 & 2023). Under his tenure, UH has regained its title as national attendance leader, including a nation's-best 7,072 average in 2025, which was the fourth-highest mark in program history. Took over the program in 2010 and led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. UH doubled its win total from the previous year and snapped a two-year postseason drought. In 2011, he guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. Prior to his arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons. OTHER HIGHLIGHTS Spent 11 years on former Rainbow Wahine head coach Dave Shoji’s staff, including eight as associate coach. Earned a reputation as a stout recruiter and master tactician. During his time on staff, the Rainbow Wahine won 11 conference titles, advanced to the NCAA Regionals 10 times, and made four NCAA Championship appearances. UH posted a remarkable 160-1 conference mark and an overall record of 310-39 for an 89-percent winning percentage during his tenure. In postseason competition, he helped guide the Rainbow Wahine to 11 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, six Regional Finals (1995, ’96, ’98, 2000, ’02, ’03), and four Final Fours (1996, 2000, ’02, ’03), including the national championship match in 1996. Helped coach eight All-Americans who earned 18 All-America certificates and two National Players of the Year (Angelica Ljungquist in 1996 and Kim Willoughby in 2003). Served as head coach three times in Shoji’s absence and the Rainbow Wahine won all three matches. In the summer of 2007, he coached the USA Volleyball Federation Senior Select Team which toured Argentina. PRIOR TO UH After an 11-year stint as assistant coach with the Hawai‘i women’s volleyball program, spent three seasons as the head women’s volleyball coach at the University of the Pacific. Compiled a 38-46 record. His teams improved 10 wins from his inaugural season to finish with an 18-9 record in 2007. That year, his squad won three tournament titles and defeated 20th-ranked Cal Poly. In 1986, founded the Magnum Volleyball Club, which was regarded by many collegiate coaches as one of the top junior programs in the country. Served as head coach of the Anaheim, Calif., club and coached eventual Rainbow Wahine standouts Kristal Attwood, Kee Williams, Sarah Chase, Heather Bown and Jessica Sudduth and former UOP standout Tracy Chambers. Also founded the Southern California Volleyball Institute in 1993 and served as its executive director. The 17,000-square-foot volleyball training facility featured four courts, offices, weight and training rooms and a pro shop. During his first five years at UH, he also coached the Rainbow Asics club team, which featured Rainbow Wahine All-American Lily Kahumoku and former Minnesota setter and U.S. Olympian Lindsey Berg. First collegiate coaching experience was at Cal State Fullerton, where he served as assistant coach while finishing his bachelor’s degree. Josh Walker
Assistant Coach
Walker carried his volleyball career overseas to Greece, Denmark, Finland, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2014-2015 he was an All-Star in the Finland Volleyball League, and also earned MVP honors during his time spent in Denmark in 2014. During his career as a Rainbow Warrior from 2007-11, Walker served as one of the teams consistent leaders in kills at outside hitter. He finished his four-year career with 1,428 kills (3.91 K/S) and currently ranks fifth in program history. Walker was named to the All-MPSF second team in 2011 and made the All-MPSF third team as well as second team AVCA All-America in 2010. Walker received his undergraduate degree in English from UH in 2011. A 2006 graduate of Tallwood High School in Virginia Beach, Walker lettered four years in volleyball and two in basketball, before making his way to UH. Walker now resides in Oahu with his wife, Tehane Walker and his daughter Shiloh.

Donan Cruz enters his first season as an assistant coach with the University of Hawai?i men’s volleyball program, bringing with him an accomplished coaching resume and a proven history of building championship-level programs. He joins the Rainbow Warriors after four highly successful seasons as head coach at Ball State University, where he compiled an impressive 292–91 career head coaching record. Milan Zarkovic
Coach
Zarkovic has more than a decade of national team coaching experience, most recently as head coach of Belarus Senior National Team from 2011-12. He was also head coach of the Serbian Junior National Team (formerly Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro) from 2001-13, leading the team to a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in 2010 and a bronze medal at the World Junior Championships in 2011. In all, Zarkovic helped the Serbians capture five gold medals at the Balkan Championships and three runner-up finishes. In addition he led his teams to the World Junior Championships three times, including third place in 2011 in Brazil and seventh place finishes in 2003 in Iran and 2005 in India. Zarkovic also coached Serbia to a fourth place finish at the 2004 European Championship in Zagreb, Croatia, and fifth place in 2006 in Kazan, Russia. Under his guidance, Serbia moved up from a No. 28 FIVB ranking in 2003 to No. 1 in 2010. In addition, he selected the Serbian squad which captured gold medals at the 2009 and 2011 World Youth Championships. The 2009 squad also won gold at the European Youth Championships while the 2011 team won silver. Zarkovic, 51, has coached in the professional ranks for more than 20 years at nine different clubs, including a stint with Al Ain UAE in 2012-13. At each stop, Zarkovic led his team to a championship. He began his coaching career in 1990 with VC Anorthosis (Limassol). From 1992-97, he coached in VC Enosis Paralimni before moving to VC Pafiakos Silogos Athlopaidion from 1997-2000. During this time, he led his clubs to several Championship and Cup titles. In 2000, Zarkovic returned to Serbia as coach of VC Partizan (Belgrade). For the next four seasons he remained with the club, and won both the Championship and Cup titles. In 2004, he coached VC CSS Sfax (Tunisia), where he managed to win both the Championship and Cup titles again. In 2007, he returned to Partizan where he coached until 2011. During the 2010-11 season he won yet another Championship title. Zarkovic was standout player for the Serbian National Team where he made 67 appearances. He also played professionally with VC Zica Kraljevo from 1974-76 before moving to VC Ribnica (Kraljevo) from 1976-82 and finally VC Partizan (Belgrade), where he remained with the club until 1989, serving as team captain. Zarkovic is fluent in six languages Serbian, English, Greek, Russian, French, and Bulgarian and is the author of two books , (published in 2005) and (published in 2012). He is a 1988 graduate of the University of Belgrade, where he mastered in electrical engineering and he also earned a Master volleyball coach study from the University of Novi Sad in 1997.
