Ryan Wagner

Assistant Coach

Wagner returns to the University of Maine at Farmington as a mens and womens cross country and track and field assistant coach. Wagner spent the previous three seasons as the head coach of the cross country team at Georgias Kennesaw State. Wagner joined the Owls in 2011 and served one season as an assistant after coaching cross country at UMF and track and field at Colby College in Maine. Wagner served as the head mens and womens cross country coach at UMF for three seasons. During his tenure, the womens team earned three consecutive North Atlantic Conference championships from 2008-2010 and he was named NAC Coach of the Year in 2009. While spending the 2011 season at Colby, Wagner worked as an assistant track and field coach, focusing on sprints, hurdles and horizontal jumps. Wagner received his bachelors degree in health and exercise science with a minor in physical education from Syracuse University in 2000, where he competed in track and field and cross country for the Orangemen. He earned his masters degree in health & physical education, with a concentration in sport management, from East Stroudsburg University in 2002. Wagner also works as a University police officer for the University of Maine at Farmington.

Scott Hutchinson

Assistant Coach

Hutchinson comes to Farmington after serving as Marywood University's first head men's and women's outdoor track and field coach since 2013 and head men's and women's cross country coach since 2014. Hutchinson is no stranger to building a program from the ground up. Before serving as Marywoods inaugural coach, he spent 15 seasons as the head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Babson College before taking over as the head men's cross country and men's outdoor track and field coach at the University of Southern Maine for eight seasons. Prior to Southern Maine, he coached two seasons as a head women's cross country and track coach at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. His coaching resume includes 12 conference championships four in cross country, four in outdoor track and field, and four in indoor track and field. During his career, Hutchinson is a 13-time Coach of the Year, winning the award in both cross country and track and field and was a candidate for New England Coach of the Year on five separate occasions. He guided the Huskies to four-straight top ten finishes at the NCAA New England Regional Championships from 2008-2011 and claimed two Maine State Collegiate indoor track titles in 2008 and 2010.  Under his tutelage, he coached 73 All-Conference cross country runners, 268 All-Conference outdoor track athletes, 284 All-Conference indoor track and field performers, 13 NCAA Academic All-America teams, 24 NCAA Academic All-Americans, and eight NCAA All-Americans. Hutchinson had seventeen of his athletes named to the All-New England team in cross country and seven All-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) cross country runners. In track and field, he had the privilege of coaching 187 NCAA All-New England athletes and 107 All-ECAC winners. Hutchinson received his Bachelor of Science in Recreation Management from the University of Maine Presque Isle in 1986. He served as an assistant men's basketball coach and the head men's and women's cross country coach at Presque Isle in 1986.  Hutchinson was an NAIA All-New England runner with the Owls in 1985 after finishing eighth at the regional championship meet and qualified for the NAIA National Championship with a time of 24:40 in the 8K race. The UMPI grad saw his best performances on the grass track with a 2:00 in the 800. On the dirt track, he ran the mile in 4:26 and also threw the javelin 178 feet. A two-time NEC All-Conference performer, Hutchinson was a three-time captain and three-time MVP.  He was elected to the Presque Isle Hall of Fame in 2002. Hutchinson holds a USA Track/Field Level 1 certification and is a member of the U.S. Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Sean Cabaniss

Sean Cabaniss '17 is the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country at UMaine Farmington specializing in sprints, hurdles, jumps, and relays. He was hired in 2020 as the Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, and was elevated to the Director position in 2024. He has a rich history at UMF, having founded the track and field program as a student in 2012. "In the last five years, we have made exciting progress with our programs, and we hope it only continues to accelerate from here. I am excited to continue developing our athletes at a school and within a program that means so much to me", said Cabaniss.  Under Cabaniss's direction, the Track & Field and Cross Country programs at UMF have flourished. Highlights include:   14 Conference Champions and 13 Second Team All-Conference Track & Field athletes 42 New England Qualifying performances, 22 of which came within the events group Cabaniss specializes in. 35 Indoor School Records, 27 Outdoor School Records 2024 NAC Men’s and Women’s Track & Field Runner-up finish (both program records for point total) 2 x NAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year (Alixx Canwell 2023 and Ben Vachon 2024) 2024 USTFCCCA East All-Region Honors (Alixx Canwell - Hammer Throw, Carrie Burr - Heptathlon) 2023 NAC Woman of the Year (Abby Minott) 2023 NAC Men’s Field Athlete of the Year (Alixx Canwell) 2023 NAC Men’s Cross Country Champions 2023 NAC Men’s Runner of the Year (Justin Castaldo) and Rookie of the Year (Ethan Linscott) 2022 NAC Men’s Cross Country Runner-up Multiple USTFCCCA All-Academic Team Accolades 3 NAC Senior Scholar Athletes of the year (Isaiah Reid ‘21, Tabitha Lingar ‘21, Abby Minott ‘23) Cabaniss has seen great success on the track and course, and he has also made a lasting impact on the community and positively influenced the experience of the student-athletes who go through his program. Under Cabaniss's leadership, the UMF Track Relay for Life events donated over $1,600 to the American Cancer Society over the last four years. He also helped realize the creation of a discus and hammer throw facility at Prescott Fields, improving the quality of the student-athlete experience for throwers in the programs. In the year prior to UMF, Cabaniss was an assistant coach for jumps and multi-event athletes at Tufts University in Medford, Massachusetts. In his only season at Tufts, Cabaniss helped two athletes garner three All-America honors in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. Additionally, he guided 15 athletes to the New England Championship, resulting in the New England Champion in the women's long jump and a third-place finish by the women's team.  Preceding Tufts, Cabaniss was a graduate assistant coach at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, where he received his Master's degree in Exercise and Sport studies. At Smith, he coached sprints, hurdles, jumps, and multi-events, while guiding athletes to two school records, four New England Championship appearances, and 17 personal bests. During his time at UMF as a student-athlete, Cabaniss studied secondary education-mathematics, applied mathematics, and coaching. He broke several track and field records and still holds program records in the long jump and triple jump. Additionally, he was a four-year standout with the UMaine-Farmington baseball team, twice setting the team's single-season hits record and finishing his career second among the program's all-time hits leaders. Cabaniss was the recipient of a prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship, the 2017 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Senior Scholar-Athlete award in men's outdoor track & field, and the 2017 NAC Man of the Year award.
