Head Coach

MacDougall just completed his 16th season at the helm of UNBs hockey program and oversees one of Canada's most successful university hockey programs. The native of Bedeque, PEI is the fourth UNB head coach from that province, following in the footsteps of former and present NHL coaches Don MacAdam, Doug MacLean and Mike Kelly (Florida). He signed a five-year contract in July, 2014 to continue his impressive journey at UNB and promptly helped lead a youthful V-Reds squad with 13 new members to an AUS title and CIS silver medal. Coach MacDougall recently guided the V-Reds to their 6th national championship(2016, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2007, 1998), his 5th as head coach. He won CIS silver medals in 2015, 2008 and 2004. MacDougall has won five national titles in ten years. This includes a Canadian record breaking 2009-10 season of 27-1 including 26 consecutive victories to start the season another CIS record. He helped lead the 2007-08 squad to the most successful season in AUS history (31-1-1) as well as the most wins ever (43) in Canadian university hockey. He is the all-time Atlantic Conference leader in total wins including regular season and play-off victories. He is top 5 in all time CIS victories and 3rd all-time in Canadian University hockey history in National Championship wins (28)  trailing CIS legends and former NHL coaches Tom Watt and Clare Drake . This further solidified his reputation as a proven winner and developer of players and teams. UNB has become the top developer of hockey talent for the professional ranks including four recent UNB players signing NHL contracts including three directly out of UNB, the only CIS school to do this in the past 20+ years. Thirty-five UNB players coached by Mac Dougall have played in the AHL/ IHL. In 2006, he became the all-time winningest coach in UNB history with 106 wins, passing one of his Island mentors Don MacAdam. Since that milestone, he has stretched the standard of success to include becoming the first AUS coach to reach the storied 400th victory in January, 2014. He has guided the UNB team to eight consecutive AUS pennants, six AUS titles, nine National Championship appearances and a remarkable 15 consecutive AUS Final Four appearances In December, 2014, MacDougall as head coach helped lead Team Canada AUS to victory at the World University Games in Trentino, Italy upsetting Team Russia 2-1 in the semi-finals and going on to record his second World University Games gold medal. Previously, he was part of the AUS staff that defeated the Russians 3-1 in the gold medal game at Torino, Italy in 2007. Prior to coming to UNB, MacDougall had an outstanding career in junior hockey in Western Canada where he was named Coach of the Year on four separate occasions, capturing four Provincial /League Championships and becoming a well-organized communicator, passionate motivator and top notch recruiter. MacDougall has been named CIS Coach of the Year in 2015 and 2010 after being a CIS finalist in 2004 and 2008. He is also a four-time Atlantic Coach of the Year winner and has been awarded Coach of the Year in his home province of PEI two separate occasions. In April 2007, MacDougall was honored with the special UNB Presidents Citation Award by then UNB University President John McLaughlin. In March 2009, President McLaughlin awarded him with the UNB Presidents Medal - UNBs most prestigious recognition. He was the first coach in UNB history to be awarded such honors. He was awarded the prestigious Paul Harris Rotary Fellowship medallion as recognition for his community service in the Fredericton hockey community and in 2012 received the distinguished Queens Diamond Jubilee medal. In 2014, he was awarded an honorary UNB Alumni distinction by the UNB Associated Alumni. Aside from a successful on-ice coaching record, Coach MacDougalls background as an educator has helped UNB student-athletes achieve strong academic standing. He has had 148 players achieved at least one term of a 3.0 grade point average while a remarkable 68 players have achieved Academic All-Canadian status (3.5+GPA). Recently, UNBs Adrian Robertson was awarded the prestigious CIS Top 8 Academic Award, the second UNB hockey player to be awarded this decorated award while two other UNB players have been awarded the CIS top player award. MacDougall is known for his positive enthusiasm and tremendous work ethic. He is a top notch recruiter who is very adept at getting the B.E.S.T. out of his players and developing a Team First culture. A keen promoter of community development, UNBs numerous hockey programs reach over 1,000 young people each year. He is co-founder of the elite V-Reds Prospects program, widely recognized as the top youth development program in Eastern Canada. Over 51 VRP have been drafted to the NHL with 16 playing in the NHL and 52 at the AHL level. He is also an accomplished motivational speaker and presenter making multiple appearances at the famous Roger Neilson Coaching Symposium, numerous Hockey Canada and NBHA regional events along with guest appearances with assorted businesses, CHL teams and school divisions. He was a guest of the Russian Hockey Federation in 2013, a 2014 guest instructor for NHL players pre-training camp in Vail, CO. and has made five European hockey visits. MacDougall is a graduate of St, Francis Xavier (BSc. P-ED) and Saint Marys (B-ED), and resides in New Maryland with wife Lee (former P-Ed mentor - District 18 and Phys-Ed teacher at NMES) and children Taylor - a 5-year QMJHL grad and 5-year Varsity Red - and Madison - a UNB grad.

Rob Hennigar

Head Coach

Bio Rob Hennigar is in his second season (2025-26) as head coach of the REDS after a decade as the team's associate coach. In his time behind the REDS' bench, UNB has won five national championships (2024, 2023, 2019, 2017, 2016), ten consecutive Atlantic University Sports regular season titles, and eight AUS championships. His first season as head coach saw Hennigar guide the REDS to a 28-1-1-0 record, UNB's 17th consecutive AUS regular season title and the REDS' 7th straight AUS championship. A former UNB student-athlete, Hennigar came to Fredericton after four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Windsor Spitfires where he was an all star in his final season. He spent four seasons as a RED. During that time he was named the team MVP in all four years and twice took home the prestigious James Downey Shield as UNB’s top overall male athlete. In 2007, Hennigar helped lead UNB to its first national title in ten years. He was also a key part of Canada’s gold-winning team at the FISU World Winter University Championships. The following year(2008), his game reached new heights. He had his best season with UNB and was awarded the BLG Award for top male student-athlete in Canada. Following the 2008 season, Hennigar signed a two-year contract with the NHL's New York Islanders. He was traded the following summer, after his first pro season, to the Carolina Hurricanes where he saw time in both the AHL and ECHL. Hennigar then signed with the Victoria Salmon Kings of the ECHL. After three seasons of professional hockey in North America, Hennigar left for Europe where he helped lead Cortina HC to their first Coppa Italia trophy. The following year Hennigar signed in Germany's DEL 2 league with the SERC Wild Wings, a team he helped guide to the league finals. Hennigar finished his playing career in the Newfoundland Senior Hockey League with the championship winning team. He was named league MVP. He lives in Fredericton with his wife Christy, their daughter Eva and their son Leo.
