Dean Breese

Head Coach

University of North Alabama head football coach Brent Dearmon announced the hire of Dean Breese to his staff on June 1, 2026 as the Head of Football Equipment. Accepting the position at 21-years-old, Breese is one of the youngest head equipment managers in the country. Prior to Florence, Breese spent three seasons as a student manager and full-time equipment intern for the football program at Coastal Carolina. Even from his internship role, Breese was heavily involved in the operation at Coastal Carolina and was trusted with many full-time responsibilities. While at Coastal Carolina, his wide-range of duties included equipment management and inventory, purchasing, maintaining and repairing equipment, organizing the football facility, distribution of equipment, setting up practices, working alongside the defensive coordinator during practice to fulfill needs, ball prep for quarterbacks, working with various vendors, oversight of electronic equipment used in practices (including clocks and CoachComm), laundry, the training of 22 new students and interns and other duties as assigned by the coaches and staff. As others have noticed his work ethic and ability, Breese received many exciting opportunities as a student manager. He has worked the Myrtle Beach Bowl Game in Conway, South Carolina and served as a 12U & 14U coach and as a referee for youth football in East Brunswick, New Jersey. In 2018, the 12U team put together an undefeated record and went on to win the AYF state championship. He also worked as an employee at Under Armour in 2024. Breese worked numerous home and road games for Coastal Carolina, including all bowl games. For the 2023 Hawaii Bowl, where Coastal won 24-14 against San Jose State, he organized and executed a shipment of the team's equipment via boat. He also played a major role in helping Coastal Carolina relocate all of its equipment to NC State after the Conway/Myrtle Beach area was hit by Hurricane Debby. Another point of pride for Breese at Coastal Carolina was assisting with an exclusive Glow in the Dark Jersey that was worn on ESPN. It was ranked the fifth best uniform of the week on UNISWAG.  He is originally from Surfside Beach, South Carolina. He currently resides in Florence.

Travis Partridge

Assistant Coach

University of North Alabama head football coach Brent Dearmon named a new offensive coordinator on December 18, 2025 during a press conference, officially announcing Travis Partridge to the position. Partridge handles play-calling duties and coaches quarterbacks for the Lions.   Partridge comes to UNA from Bowling Green, where he served as co-offensive coordinator and pass game coordinator. He was also on Eddie George's staff at Tennessee State as the OC in 2024, where he helped the Tigers make the FCS Playoffs for the first time since 2013.   Prior to Tennessee State, Partridge was the pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at UT Martin in 2022 and 2023. The Skyhawks were among the top three offensives in the conference both seasons. He came to UT Martin from Kansas, where he was working with Dearmon under Les Miles for three seasons. He went from offensive quality control coach in 2019 and 2020 to interim quarterbacks coach in 2021.   "Travis Partridge is a home run hire for us," said Dearmon at the time of hire. "Bringing in an FBS caliber coordinator will allow me to facilitate all aspects of the program even more with my hands off of the offense. Travis has been successful at multiple FCS programs and coached the QB position at an extremely-high level."   While at TSU in 2024 — his most recent FCS stop — he guided quarterback Dralyen Ellis to top-15 FCS rankings in passing yards (3,029) and passing touchdowns (24). He also worked with UT Martin quarterback Dresser Winn, an all-conference selection who totaled 2,928 yards and 18 touchdowns.   "I'm honored to be able to join the rich tradition of the North Alabama football program," said Partridge at the time of hire. "I believe in Coach Dearmon and his vision for the future. My family and I can't wait to join the wonderful community here."   His coaching journey began at Delta State in 2017, where he served as a graduate assistant, primarily working with quarterbacks. Delta State achieved a 9-4 record, finishing tied for second in the Gulf Coast Conference standings, with an offensive average of 30.1 points per game and 50 touchdowns.   His initial tenure at UT Martin began in 2018, as he worked under head coach Jason Simpson as the quarterback coach, overseeing a season where Skyhawk quarterbacks threw for 2,917 yards and 21 touchdowns with a completion percentage of 62.8.   Before transitioning to coaching, Partridge had a successful professional playing career, signing with the Minnesota Vikings as a priority free agent in 2014 and later playing for the British Columbia Lions in the Canadian Football League (CFL). Additionally, he excelled in the Indoor Football League with the Iowa Barnstormers.   Partridge is from St. Joseph, Mo. and played for his father, Jerry Partridge, at Missouri Western State from 2009-2013 — the same school where Dr. Josh Looney was athletic director before coming to UNA.   Partridge holds various career records at Missouri Western, including passes completed, pass attempts, pass yards, touchdown passes and completion percentage. Partridge also set the career rushing touchdowns mark and ranks fourth in career passing yards per game.   His father, Jerry, was recently the assistant head coach and defensive coordinator at UT Martin. Last week, he was named the head coach at Northwestern Oklahoma State. Jerry is a hall of fame head coach with 149 career wins at Missouri Western. Travis' grandfather, Gerald Partridge, was a hall of fame high school coach, winning 200 games at Warrensburg High School and Ruskin High School in Kansas City, Mo.   Partridge received his bachelor's degree in physical education from Missouri Western in 2013 and prepped at Savannah High School, where he was an all-district and second-team all-conference quarterback.

Craig Schurig

Assistant Coach

Updated: April 7, 2025 Coaching veteran Craig Schurig was added to Brent Dearmon's staff in February 2025 as UNA's quarterback coach. Prior to North Alabama, Schurig was head coach at NCAA Division II Washburn University for 22 seasons. He compiled a career record of 142-109 and is the winningest coach in school history. In the early part of his tenure, he coached current UNA Athletic Director, Dr. Josh Looney, who transferred to Washburn in 2002 and played until 2005. Schurig led the team to an MIAA Championship during Looney's senior season in 2005. Schurig won his 100th career game in a 45-13 win over Missouri Southern on Oct. 8, 2016 becoming only the fifth MIAA coach to reach the century mark in victories. Over his 22 seasons, in addition to four NCAA playoff appearances and a conference title, Schurig led the Washburn football program to the 2004 Mineral Water Bowl championship, the 2010 Kanza Bowl championship and the 2017 C.H.A.M.P.S. Heart of Texas Bowl title; as well as the 2016 Mineral Water Bowl in Washburn’s eighth postseason game under Schurig. In 2011, the Ichabods reached their third NCAA playoffs in school history going 10-3 setting a school-record for the most wins in a season. Washburn also recorded its first playoff victory in school history with a 52-49 win over Abilene Christian.  As quarterbacks coach, he helped Dane Simoneau throw for more than 4,000 yards setting a school record and a national finalist award for the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in NCAA Division II, the first national finalist in Washburn history. Simoneau would go on to be a five-time consensus All-American at quarterback as well as the MIAA’s Offensive Player of the Year, the first Ichabod to win the award. The 2010 season saw the Ichabods go 8-4 with the Kanza Bowl appearance in front of a Topeka crowd topping a No. 24-ranked Midwestern State team. During the 2009 campaign, Schurig led the Ichabods to their sixth straight winning season, something which had not been done in the program’s history, finishing with an 8-3 overall record and a second place MIAA finish with a 6-3 mark. In 2008, the season was the fifth-straight winning campaign  for the  Ichabods  and   the first  five-year  run of winning seasons since the 1903-07 seasons. In 2007, the Ichabods made their second NCAA playoff appearance with an 8-4 overall record and a 7-2 MIAA mark placing second in the conference.  Following the 2006 season, the Ichabods recorded a 7-4 record securing their third straight winning season for the first time since the 1986 to 1988 campaigns. Schurig earned the 2005 MIAA’s Coach of the Year for his efforts leading the Ichabods that season in which Washburn won its first conference championship since 1983. He was also named the AFCA’s Region 3 Coach of the Year. Washburn finished the 2005 season with a school-record nine wins and a 7-1 mark in conference play. The 2004 season saw the Ichabods record their first winning season since 1999 and their first postseason win since 1986 with a 36-33 win over Northern State in the Mineral Water Bowl. In his 22 seasons at Washburn, the Ichabods have had 30 different players earn 74 different All-American accolades, two MIAA Most Valuable Defensive Players, an MIAA Offensive Player of the Year, three MIAA Special Teams Players of the Year, four MIAA Freshmen of the Year awards and 261 players receive all-MIAA honors. He has been equally on task with players in the classroom with 646 Ichabods named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll, including four Academic All-Americans. Schurig was named the Ichabod head coach on Dec. 28, 2001 after spending nine seasons on the Pittsburg State coaching staff, where he was a part of an NCAA national finalist squad in 1995, four MIAA championship teams and eight NCAA Division II playoff teams. He helped guide one of the top defenses in Division II, including the top-ranked defensive squad in 1999. Prior to working with the defensive backs, he worked three seasons with the Gorillas’ tight ends. Before arriving at Pittsburg State, Schurig spent the 1992 season as a volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater, Colorado School of Mines before joining the Gorillas in 1993. Schurig, a Willingboro, N.J., native, was a four-year letterman as a defensive back at Colorado Mines and was selected team captain as a senior. He earned second-team all-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors as a senior. He graduated in 1987 with a bachelor’s degree in petroleum engineering. Schurig earned a master’s degree in physical education at Pittsburg State in 1996. Jovante Moffatt

Assistant Coach

University of North Alabama head football coach Brent Dearmon added an NFL talent to his defensive coaching staff on Friday, officially naming Jovante Moffatt as the safeties coach.   Moffatt comes to the Shoals fresh off a solid NFL career that included stints with the Cleveland Browns, New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons and Arizona Cardinals. Prior to his NFL career, he played safety at Middle Tennessee from 2015-19 and finished as the fifth all-time leading tackler with 313 total tackles.   Moffatt also set the record for most career games at Middle Tennessee with 55 over his five seasons. In 2015 — his true freshman season — he was one of two NFL talents on the defense along with All-Pro safety Kevin Byard.   UNA will be Moffatt’s first coaching position following his NFL career.   “We are blessed to add Jovante Moffatt,” said Dearmon at the time of hire. “His college and NFL experience will be a huge asset to the development of our defensive backfield. Jovante was a leader as a player at MTSU and all his former coaches speak extremely highly of his character.”   Following a standout career at Union City High School in Tennessee, Moffatt took his talents to Murfreesboro and played five seasons. He played four games as a senior and redshirted to recover from an offseason surgery but otherwise played in every game over four full seasons.   After Middle Tennessee, Moffatt signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent in 2020 and played his first two seasons with the franchise. This later led to the Jets, Falcons and the Cardinals up until his recent retirement.   “I am incredibly honored and excited to begin my coaching career at the University of North Alabama,” said Moffatt. “Football has always been a passion of mine, and I’m eager to learn, grow and contribute to a culture of excellence both on and off the field.”

Vincent Jackson

Assistant Coach

A former defensive back for the Lions, Vincent Jackson joined the UNA staff in a volunteer role in 2025 and was promoted to a full-time coaching role with the outside linebackers and nickels in January 2026.   "I am thrilled to announce the addition of Bo Jackson as our outside linebackers coach," said Dearmon upon Jackson's promotion. "Adding another UNA Lion to the staff was important to me. Bo has a great deal of pride in this place, and it shows through his passion and coaching."   Jackson lettered at UNA from 2005-07 for head coach Mark Hudspeth. Jackson was part of a senior class that finished with a 44-8 overall record — the third-best record for a senior class in program history. The other two classes with a better record were the three-time national championship winners in 1995 and 1996.   Following his graduation from UNA in 2010, Jackson spent the better part of a decade working in education and coaching. He is originally from Demopolis, Ala.   "The level of excitement being on this UNA staff is a dream come true," said Jackson. "The staff that Coach Dearmon has assembled is top-notch, and I am excited to work with a group of men that are on the same page as I am. We are in the business of turning young men into better men on and off the field. This staff has a lot of knowledge amongst the years of FBS and FCS coaching experience that will make us a better team this upcoming season. The love I have for UNA goes back 20 years ago when I first stepped on campus as a young freshman. Playing for this university from '05 to '08 was some wonderful years of my life, and now I have the opportunity to coach on this staff — it's a dream come true. UNA was already a part of my life as a young adult, and now UNA will forever be near and dear to my heart."

Josh Long

Assistant Coach

Former in-state defensive lineman Josh Long was announced to the UNA defensive staff as the defensive line coach on December 29, 2025.    Long comes to UNA from Memphis, where he was a defensive quality control analyst. With Long on staff, Memphis finished the regular season with an 8-4 overall record and played in the Union Home Mortgage Gasparilla Bowl against NC State in Tampa, Fla.   Long also spent the 2024 season on staff, helping the Tigers go 11-2 with a pair of Power Four wins over Florida State and West Virginia. The Tigers also knocked off SEC foe Arkansas and No. 18 South Florida in 2025. Long primarily worked with the nose guards in 2024 and the ends and edge rushers in 2025. He was also the primary signal caller on game days.   "Josh Long immediately makes us better," said UNA head coach Brent Dearmon at the time of hire. "Josh has helped recruit and develop one of the best defensive lines in all of college football at Memphis. He played three seasons at Samford, then played one final season at Alabama State after COVID-19. He appeared in 36 games over those four seasons in Birmingham and Montgomery.   After his playing career, he became a graduate assistant at Alabama State and spent the 2022 season in that role. He coached multiple all-conference selections and the SWAC leader in sacks, Nelson Jordan II. In 2023, he was the defensive line coach, special teams coordinator and academic coordinator at Kentucky Christian.   "I'm extremely excited to join the University of North Alabama and be part of this program," said Long at the time of hire. "UNA has a strong tradition, great people and a vision that aligns with who I am as a coach. I've spent six years being a part of college football in the state of Alabama, which has incredible talent, and I can't wait to get to work with our players and recruit this state. We will compete on a daily basis in all facets of life — academically, on the football field and in everything we do with a strong focus on developing complete, competitive young men. I'm grateful for the opportunity to work with this staff and invest in our players both on and off the field."

Justice Clegg

Assistant Coach

University of North Alabama head football coach Brent Dearmon announced the hire of Justice Clegg as offensive line coach on April 8, 2026.   Clegg came to the Shoals from Iowa Central Community College, where he led one of the top offensive line units at the JUCO level for seven seasons. The Tritons went seven straight years without a losing season during his tenure, including an 8-4 record in 2025 to rank No. 9 in the NJCAA national polls.   While at Iowa Central, Clegg produced 11 All-Americans on the offensive line and over 30 student-athletes that received a Division I scholarship. His position group — commonly known as the "Sled Dawgs" — helped an offense that ranked second nationally in total yards, third in rushing and passing, third in offensive yards per game and fifth in points per game.   "UNA Football is excited to welcome Coach Clegg to our staff," said Dearmon at the time of hire. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and has developed high-level offensive lineman at the junior college level for many years. Coach will be an immediate impact in this program in recruiting, as well."   Clegg performed many additional roles at Iowa Central on top of his coaching duties. He served as recruiting coordinator for the program, athletic coordinator, fundraising coordinator and strength and conditioning coordinator.   Prior to Iowa Central, Clegg was the offensive line coach at NAIA member Graceland University — also in Iowa. He spent seven seasons there from 2013-19. Prior to that, he coached two seasons at Missouri Valley College and one at MacMurray College as an assistant.   As a player, Clegg was a three-year starter and team captain at Upper Iowa University from 2007-09. He also played two seasons at Utah Tech, then known as Dixie State.   "I can't explain how happy my family and I are to be part of the Shoals community," said Clegg at the time of hire. "This area is so rich with history and is known famously for the wonderful people in the community — couldn't ask for a better place to raise a family. I'm pumped to be accepted into the UNA family and go to work for this beautiful University and be a servant leader to the young men of this program. To have the opportunity to work hand-in-hand with this staff of coaches and men that lead this team is something that will bring a smile on my face daily. I want to thank the coaches for allowing me to get in the fight with them — boots are strapped up tight to go to work. Roar Lions!"

Clint Bowen

Coach

A veteran defensive coordinator with a healthy amount of Big 12 experience, Clint Bowen was officially introduced as UNA's new defensive coordinator on January 28, 2026. Bowen comes over from Oklahoma State, where he was the interim defensive coordinator for 2025. He previously served as the head coach at Lawrence High School in Kansas from 2021-24.   In fact, most of Bowen's football career has been spent in Lawrence — including a few years with Dearmon while he was at Kansas as the offensive coordinator. Bowen played defensive back at Kansas from 1991-94 and went on to coach two decades over multiple stints with the Jayhawks in various roles.   "Clint Bowen is one of the smartest defensive minds I have been around in football," said Dearmon. "The experience and knowledge he will bring to our staff will be of great benefit. He has been a coordinator in the Big 12 on multiple occasions and has learned how to adapt his defense to best fit his players."   His career started in 1996 as a graduate assistant at Kansas. He left for the same position at Minnesota in 1997 before returning to Kansas for two more seasons. He was then elevated to special teams from 2001-05 while coaching various position groups. In 2006, he was named co-defensive coordinator then was promoted to defensive coordinator from 2008-09.   Bowen became the defensive coordinator for Western Kentucky in 2010 and North Texas in 2011. His journey brought him back to Kansas in 2012, where he spend the next eight seasons in various roles. He was the defensive coordinator and interim head coach in 2014, then became assistant head coach and defensive coordinator again from 2015-18.   He returned to North Texas in 2020 as the DC for one season, then took the high school gig in Lawrence for the next four seasons. He coached the team to a 26-15 record over that span while coaching both of his sons, Baylor and Banks. Banks is the younger son and committed to UNA to play quarterback earlier this month.   Bowen left the high school ranks for a position at Oklahoma State, where he was a quality control coach before being tabbed the interim defensive coordinator. Oklahoma State went from allowing 38.0 PPG to rank among the worst teams in FBS to allowing just 17.0 PPG over the final three weeks of the season once Bowen was moved to interim DC — ranking 25th.   "I'm thankful to Coach Dearmon for the opportunity to be a part of UNA football as the defensive coordinator," said Bowen. "I look forward to building relationships with our players and the UNA community. Work has already started building a defense that gets the UNA fans excited."
