Leah Buchmann

Associate Head Coach

Buchmann teams up with head coach Jan Mann in running the day-to-day operations of the womens golf program in addition to her on-course duties as coach and instructor.  Leah continues to be a tremendous asset to the UNC womens golf program, says Tar Heel head coach Jan Mann. Her experience and success as a collegiate and professional golfer is invaluable for our teams success.  She has a great relationship with member of the team and enjoys helping them reach their full potential while at Carolina. Since joining the Tar Heels in 2012, Buchmann has helped lead Carolina to three team championships and one individual title, as well as an NCAA Championships appearance in 2016. The three team wins came in 2012-13 as the Tar Heels were victorious at the Liz Murphey Fall Preview, the Ruths Chris Tar Heel Invitational and the UCF Challenge while Elizabeth Mallett won the individual title at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational in the spring of 2014.  During Buchmanns tenure, three Tar Heels have been selected to the All-ACC team while two Tar Heels have been chosen to the All-ACC Academic Womens Golf Team on four occasions. In addition, two Tar Heels have been named NGCA All-America Scholars. I absolutely love everything about Carolina and this team, says Buchmann.  I get to work with one of my best friends and a team that is passionate about life and golf.  It is inspiring to see the team give it their very best on and off the course each day.  In the end, that is all we ask for as a coach from our student athletes to give their very best and to see the day as an opportunity to learn and grow regardless of our circumstances.  That is what I, and we as a team, try to do every day here at Carolina, where success is just a byproduct of our effort. Buchmann (then Wigger) played collegiate golf at the University of Virginia, from fall 2003 to spring 2007.  Upon graduation, she played professional golf for five years, 2007-2012.  In addition, she served as a volunteer coach on the Tar Heel staff in the spring of 2011.   While at Virginia, Buchmann carded 24 top-10 finishes including one win, the 2007 Liz Murphey Classic, and she was runner-up at the 2005 NCAA Championships.  She was a four-time All-ACC performer (2004-07), two-time National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA) All-America (2006-07) and two-time Golfweek All-America (2006-07).  She led Virginia in scoring all four years (2004-07) and was chosen the Cavalier Golfer of the Year four times (2004-07). Buchmann excelled academically as well.  She was named to the All-ACC Academic Womens Golf Team four times (2004-07) and was a four-time NGCA All-America Scholar (2004-07). Buchmann (then Wigger) competed on the LPGA Futures Tour in 2007-08, 2011 and 2012 while playing on the LPGA Tour in 2009 and 2010.  She has two wins to her credit, the 2008 American Systems Invitational in Daytona Beach, Fla., and the 2012 Symetra Tour Island Resort Championship in Harris, Mich.  She also participated in the U.S. Womens Open in 2007 and 2008. Leah and Drew Buchmann were married in the summer of 2014. Their daughter Evelyn was born November 29th, 2015.

Jan Mann

Assistant Coach

Mann, a proven and experienced head coach, became the third head coach in Carolina history and took over the program July 2009. In Mann's first seven years at the helm, the Tar Heels won five team championships and three individual championships. In 2010-11, Carolina won the Cougar Classic and the ACC Championship while in 2012-13, the Tar Heels won the Liz Murphey Fall Preview, the Ruth's Chris Tar Heel Invitational and the UCF Challenge.  Two of the individual titles came in 2012 when Catherine O'Donnell won the 2012 LSU Golf Classic and the 2012 NCAA West Regional while Elizabeth Mallett won the 2014 SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational.   Mann guided Carolina to it's 15th appearance at the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championships during the 2015-16 season. The Tar Heels started the year with a shaky fall, but pulled things together toward the end of the spring to finish fourth at the ACC Championships, fourth at the NCAA Stanford Regional, and 14th at the NCAA Championships. During the 2014-15 season Carolina finished third at the ACC Championships. In 2014 Carolina carded a fourth-place finish at the ACC Championships and finished 14th at the NCAA Central Regional. In 2012-13, the Tar Heels finished 10th at the NCAA East Regional and posted five top-five finishes.  In 2012, Carolina finished 10th at the NCAA Championships and carded seven top-five finishes. In addition, Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell captured two individual titles, the LSU Classic and the NCAA West Regional. After winning the 2011 ACC Championship by 24 strokes, the Tar Heels went on to a runner-up finish at the NCAA East Regional and then tied for eighth at the NCAA Championships.  Carolina also won the first tournament of the year, the Cougar Classic, and was the runner-up at The Landfall Tradition.  In 2010, Carolina earned an NCAA bid to the NCAA East Regional where they finished 13th. Mann was crowned the 2011 ACC Coach of the Year, the second time she has received that honor.  She was also selected the 2005 ACC Coach of the Year when she was the head coach at Virginia. Mann was the first head coach at the University of Virginia from 2002-2007, establishing the inaugural women's golf program there, with 2003-04 being its first year of competition. Mann's teams participated in the NCAA Regionals in 2005, 2006 and 2007 advancing on to the NCAA Championships in 2005 and advancing an individual in 2006. Mann's teams received 20 ACC academic honors and the Cavaliers were presented the ACC Sportsmanship Award in 2006. Mann coached an All-America, Leah Wigger, who was selected to the team two times and her players received National Golf Coaches Association's (NGCA) All-America Scholar honors 12 times (five at UNC). Her players were selected to the All-ACC team 11 times (five at UNC) and to the All-ACC Academic Women's Golf Team 14 times (seven from UNC). Mann served as the head women's golf coach at UNC Wilmington from 1994-2002, taking the Seahawks to the NCAA Regionals for the first time in school history in 1998. Her players received NGCA Academic All-America awards nine times. The Seahawks were crowned the 2002 Big South Conference Champions and one of her players, Rebecca Dean, was selected the 2002 Big South Conference Player of the Year. Mann was chosen the 2002 Big South Coach of the Year and her 2001 team received the UNCW Leadership Award for performance in the classroom, community and playing field. UNC Wilmington also served as host of the 1995 NCAA Championship as well as the 1994 NCAA Preview Tournament. Mann has also served on several NCAA committees. From 2000-04 she was an NCAA Regional Advisory Committee member and NCAA Division I Golf Committee Member, on which she served as chair in 2003-04. Mann was selected to coach the 2003 United States team during the U.S.-Japan Matches. She was on the NGCA Board of Directors, 2005-07; on the LPGA Coaches Advisory Committee, 2003-07 and on the USGA Intercollegiate Relations Committee, 2003-05. In 2000 and 2001 she was chosen one of Golf Digest's Top Teachers in North Carolina. Mann, a graduate of UNC Wilmington, was an accomplished golf professional and teacher before entering the coaching profession. Mann was Director of Pinehurst Golf School and Teaching Center, 1992-1994; a teaching professional at John Jacobs Golf Schools in Point Clear, Ala., 1991; Assistant Golf Professional at Echo Farms Country Club in Wilmington, 1985-91; and Assistant Golf Professional at The Cape Golf and Racquet Club in Wilmington, 1984-1985.
