Dane Jackson
Head Coach
University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Bill Chaves announced on Saturday, March 29, 2025 that Dane Jackson has been named the 17th head coach of the North Dakota hockey program. Jackson has spent the last 19 years on the bench for North Dakota, serving as an assistant coach before being elevated to associate head coach prior to the 2015-16 season. He has primarily coached the team's forwards and penalty kill, while also working directly with UND's forwards and defense on individual skill development throughout the year. "I am very humbled and appreciative of the opportunity to become the next leader of the North Dakota hockey program," said Jackson at the time of his hiring. "I feel fortunate of all the things that I have learned from the UND culture, and it is this special place that has shaped my playing and coaching career. I am looking forward to getting right to hard work with our staff to make our program and great University proud. I want to thank Dr. Andy Armacost, Bill Chaves and Erik Martinson for having the trust in me to lead this program." During his time at UND, Jackson's penalty-killing units have annually ranked among the best in the nation and have led their conference in PK percentage seven times. UND has also ranked among the top three in its conference in 12 of the last 15 years under Jackson. Jackson joined UND in 2006 after serving as head coach and player personnel director for the Adirondack Frostbite of the United Hockey League. Prior to coaching at Adirondack, Jackson spent two seasons as an assistant coach for the American Hockey League's Manchester Monarchs. The Monarchs posted 102- and 109-point seasons during Jackson's two seasons there. A native of Castlegar, British Columbia, Jackson played for UND from 1988-92 and registered 59 goals and 103 points in 150 career games, serving as an alternate captain as a senior. He was drafted in the third round (44th overall) by Vancouver in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft. After finishing his collegiate playing career, Jackson went on to enjoy an 11-year professional playing career that included stints in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks, Buffalo Sabres and New York Islanders. He was a captain five times during his professional playing career and won community service awards in two separate cities (Syracuse, N.Y. and Hamilton, Ontario). He was also honored with the Rochester Americans' (AHL) Leadership and Dedication Award in 2000-01. Matt Shaw
Assistant Coach
Shaw also oversees the team's defensemen, who ranked fourth nationally last season with 121 points. We are extremely pleased to have Matt join our staff at North Dakota, said UND head coach after announcing Shaw's hiring. His vast coaching experience throughout professional, college and junior hockey will greatly benefit our players and our program. His coaching success throughout his career is due to his attention to detail, work ethic, and great knowledge of the game. Matts communication skills and ability to develop young players make him a perfect fit for our family here at UND. Shaw came to Grand Forks after having spent the previous two seasons as head coach and general manager of the United States Hockey Leagues (USHL) Dubuque Fighting Saints, with whom he amassed a two-year record of 69-42-0-9 (.613). Prior to his time in Dubuque, Shaw was an assistant coach with the NHLs New Jersey Devils (2012-13), San Jose Sharks (2009-12) and Minnesota Wild (2007-09). While with the Sharks, Shaws power play ranked among the top four in the NHL in each of his three seasons, ranking second in both 2010-11 and 2011-12 and fourth in 2009-10. It was the NHLs only power play to be ranked in the top four in all three of those years. Shaws coaching background also include stops in the American Hockey League, International Hockey League, United Hockey League, East Coast Hockey League and Colonial Hockey League. A collegiate defenseman himself, Shaw played three seasons at United States International University (1985-88) and one season at Colorado College (1988-89). He graduated from Colorado College with a bachelors degree in economics. Originally from Seattle, Shaws family includes wife Carolyn, daughter Clare, and son Hayden, a sophomore defenseman for the Fighting Hawks.

He also garnered national coach of the year honors from U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) and was one of eight finalists for the Spencer Penrose Award, given to the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) Coach of the Year. Four of Berrys players forwards and , defenseman , and goaltender earned All-America honors, joining UNDs 1986-87 team as the only entries in school history to boast four All-Americans. Following the season, eight players signed professional contracts: Caggiula (Edmonton Oilers), Stecher (Vancouver Canucks), (Los Angeles Kings), (Anaheim Ducks), (Chicago Blackhawks), (Chicago Blackhawks), (AHLs Rockford IceHogs), and (ECHL's Orlando Solar Bears). Highly-regarded within the hockey world as an outstanding recruiter and teacher, Berry boasts a wealth of coaching and playing experience at the professional, collegiate and international levels. Berry was named head coach at North Dakota on May 18, 2015, becoming the 16th head coach in program history and the sixth former UND player to take the helm. We are excited to have Brad take leadership of the UND mens hockey program, said UND Athletics Director after appointing Berry head coach. He is an effective recruiter, has an outstanding reputation as a teacher of the game, and brings a tremendous energy and passion to the position. His core values and his understanding of the unique culture that has made UND hockey so successful are the traits that make him the right coach to carry the program forward. Berry had recently completed his ninth season as an assistant coach at UND in 2014-15. He served two stints in that role, first from 2000-01 through 2005-06 and again from 2012-13 through 2014-15. He also previously spent time as an assistant coach with the NHLs Columbus Blue Jackets (2010-12) and the AHLs Manitoba Moose (2006-08). During his nine years on the UND staff, Berry helped lead the program to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, five NCAA Frozen Four berths (2014-15, 2013-14, 2005-06, 2004-05 and 2000-01), three regular season conference titles (2014-15, 2003-04 and 2000-01), and one conference tournament championship (2005-06). Berry oversaw the teams defensemen during both of his stints at UND and routinely produced blue line units that ranked among the conference national leaders, both offensively and defensively. In each of the last two seasons, UND led the nation in both points and points per game by defensemen. At the other end of the ice, UND allowed a league-low 2.24 goals against per game in 2014-15 and ranked among the top three in the conference in that category in five of Berrys last six seasons with the program. Before returning to UND prior to the 2012-13 season, Berry spent two years (2010-12) as an assistant coach with the NHLs Columbus Blue Jackets. Prior to that, Berry founded in Grand Forks, which focuses on developing and training youth hockey players within Grand Forks and surrounding areas. During that time (2008-10), he doubled as a part-time scout with the NHLs Vancouver Canucks. Berry was an assistant coach with the Manitoba Moose from 2006-08 and helped lead the Vancouver Canucks AHL affiliate to a playoff appearance in each of his two years, including a North Division title in 2006-07. At every stop during his career, Berry has enhanced his reputation as a coach who develops National Hockey League defensemen. Eleven of his former UND pupils have reached NHL rosters, including two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Greene of the Los Angeles Kings. While with the AHLs Manitoba Moose, Berry mentored future Vancouver Canucks stalwart Alexander Edler. During his two years with the Blue Jackets, Berry coached the likes of James Wisniewski, Mike Commodore, Marc Methot, Jack Johnson, Kris Russell, Anton Stralman, Fedor Tyutin, and Rostislav Klesla. Berry himself was a standout defenseman as a player, first at UND where he collected 74 points (12 goals, 62 assists) in 112 games from 1983-86 under legendary head coach John Gino Gasparini. Berry also won a gold medal with Canada at the 1985 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship. A second-round draft pick (29th overall) of the Winnipeg Jets in 1983, Berry went on to play in 241 NHL games over eight years, including stints with Winnipeg, Minnesota and Dallas. His professional playing career also included stops in the Swedish Elite League and the International Hockey League (IHL). While with the IHLs Michigan K-Wings, Berry was a three-time IHL All-Star and was named the K-Wings Defenseman of the Year three times. After his playing career ended, Berry was a professional scout with the 1999-2000 Dallas Stars team that advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals.
