University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Bill Chaves announced on Tuesday, December 23, 2025 that David Nguyen (pronounced WIN) has been named the 15th head coach of the North Dakota volleyball program. Nguyen comes to North Dakota following a successful run as the head coach at Division I Fairleigh Dickinson, where he helped the Knights set multiple program highs in his four years. He guided the Knights to their first NCAA Tournament appearance and captured both the 2022 NEC Tournament Championship and the 2023 regular season title, each a program first. His leadership helped claim the program’s first 20-win season in the modern era and earned him back-to-back NEC Coach of the Year honors in 2022 and 2023. Under his direction, FDU reached three consecutive NEC Tournament finals and four straight conference semifinals. His teams produced the NEC Player of the Year, an AVCA All-American, nine all-conference selections and multiple all-tournament honorees. The Knights also recorded the four winningest conference seasons in school history during his tenure. Nguyen brings more than a decade of Division I experience, including assistant coaching roles at Coastal Carolina and William & Mary, as well as an operations role at Virginia and a student position at Virginia Commonwealth. AnnaBelle Tomei

University of North Dakota volleyball coach David Nguyen announced the hiring of AnnaBelle Tomei as assistant coach for the Fighting Hawks on February 2, 2026. "We are excited and grateful to have AnnaBelle join our staff," said Nguyen. "She is going to bring great energy and a relentless work ethic. Her ability to relate and communicate to our players will make her a great asset in the gym. I can't wait to see her growth with the team." Tomei comes to Grand Forks after spending two seasons as a Graduate Assistant at VCU, helping the Rams go 28-8 in Atlantic-10 play. She had a plethora of responsibilities, from setting up video and technology for all practices and competitions, to leading individual/small-group skill sessions and coordinating recruiting visits. "I am incredibly grateful to David for the opportunity to join his staff and for the trust he has placed in me at this stage of my career," said Tomei. "From the moment I connected with him, it was clear how special this program and university are. I am thankful to the athletic department and the university for the warm welcome. I am excited to continue learning, work with our student-athletes and help this program move forward together!" A native of West Chicago, Ill., Tomei played five years of collegiate volleyball, four at Oakland University and one at VCU. She was a setter who totaled 2,445 career assists, across 477 sets, good for 5.13 assists/set. She led her team in assists all five seasons, being a a two-time team captain for Oakland from 2021-22. She was a CSC Academic All-District selection in 2022 and an Academic All-Horizon League recipient in 2021. In her one season at VCU, Tomei played with current UND libero, Katie Paez. Tomei graduated from Oakland University in 2023 with a Bachelor of Science in Marketing and earned her Master of Sport Leadership from VCU in Dec. of 2025.

Clark Joslin
Assistant Coach
University of North Dakota volleyball coach David Nguyen announced the hiring of Clark Joslin as assistant coach for the Fighting Hawks on February 9, 2026. "I am thrilled to have Clark join our staff," said Nguyen. "I have had the opportunity to coach against him a couple of times and felt like we could work well together. His ability to scout, game plan and recruit, will really help our program excel. I look forward to seeing all that we will accomplish together." Joslin comes to Grand Forks after spending three seasons as an assistant coach at Central Michigan from 2023-25. In his first two seasons, he primarily coached middle blockers and pin blockers, helping the Chippewas go 24-7 in 2024. "I am honored and humbled to join the University of North Dakota volleyball family," said Joslin. This move was an easy decision for me after my conversations with Coach Nguyen. His passion, intelligence and vision made it clear that he is committed to building a program that is founded on student-athlete development, on and off the court. I look forward to working with him and everyone else surrounding the program to create an environment of positivity, collaboration and competition!" In 2025, he coached primarily pin attackers, helping senior outside hitter Natalia Rejment jump from 2.76 kills/set in 2024 to 3.11 kill/set in 2025. She earned second team All-MAC honors as a result. Prior to coaching, Joslin was a practice player with the Michigan State volleyball team for the 2021 and 2022 seasons. He also simulated scout team opponents to help the Spartans prepare for matches. A native of Troy, Mich., Joslin graduated from Michigan State in 2023 with a Bachelor of Arts in Film Studies, before receiving his MBA in Business Data Analytics in 2025.
