Anthony Bertoli
Assistant Coach
Bertoli One of the fastest rising stars in coaching, Anthony Bertoli enters his third season at UNI as an assistant coach for the pole vault, multi-events, sprints/hurdles and javelin. During the 2013 indoor season, Bertoli guided senior Ethan Miller to an NCAA qualifying performance of 5682 in the heptathlon; a mark that ranks 2nd on one of UNIs strongest all-time lists. Miller would go on to earn 2nd team All-American honors in the heptathlon and be an All-Conference performer for the Panthers in both the heptathlon and the pole vault. Bertolis coaching also led to a number of standout performances by pole vaulter Libby Torresani. The sophomore increased her personal best by a total of 15 inches over the course of the indoor season, a feat that would earn her All-Conference honors and the number two position on UNIs all-time list. Bertolis success continued during the outdoor season with senior Daniel Gooris once again claiming the Drake Relays Decathlon crown, becoming only the second athlete to win back-to-back years in relays history. Gooris went on to win an unprecedented fourth MVC Decathlon title with a NCAA Championships qualifying score of 7780. Following his performance in the decathlon Gooris also captured the MVC title in the pole vault. In the post season, Gooris asserted himself as one of the top decathletes in the country, placing 12th in one of the strongest decathlons in NCAA history and earning second team All-American honors. Extending his season further, Gooris qualified for the US Championships where he earned a spot on the prestigious USA Thorpe Cup team. The Panther senior finished as the number two athlete for the US and fourth overall, scoring a personal best of 7804 pts. During two seasons under Bertoli, Gooris flourished, setting personal bests in nine of the ten events and increasing his overall score by more than 450 points. During the 2012 indoor season, Bertoli led Daniel Gooris to his second MVC Heptathlon title with a score of 5679. Gooris performance at the MVC championships would also qualify him for the NCAA Indoor National Championships in Boise, ID where he placed 9th, earning second team All-American honors. Outdoors, Gooris claimed the Drake Relays title in the Decathlon went on to secure his third MVC Decathlon title and qualify for the NCAA Championships in both the Decathlon and Pole Vault, where he earned second team All-America honors. Senior Jenna Wexter made history on multiple occasions under Bertolis guidance, breaking school records in both the indoor and outdoor pole vault (3.99m/1301.00 and 3.98m/1300.75). Since joining the UNI staff, Bertolis athletes have earned eight MVC All-Conference performances, turned in ten national qualifying marks and recorded 13 top five performances. Prior to UNI, Bertoli served as an assistant coach at Troy University for the 2011 season. While at Troy, Bertoli worked with the horizontal jumps, pole vault and multi-event athletes. During the 2010 season, Bertoli served as a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana State University, where he had competed as a student-athlete from 2005-09. While at Indiana State, Bertoli assisted in the development of pole vaulter Kylie Hutson, a multiple-time NCAA national champion and the MVC all-time record holder. "I am thrilled we were able to attract a coach of Anthonys caliber to our program," noted Steele. "Coaches with his level of passion and work ethic are game-changers. With his elite-level coaching, tireless recruiting and administrative expertise, he has made an immediate impact on our program." Bertoli is certified by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as both a jumps and a throws specialist. He is also recognized as a USA Track & Field (USATF) Level II jumps coach. In June 2011 Bertoli was selected as one of 16 coaches in the nation to attend the jumps portion of USATFs Emerging Elite Coaches Camp, and was one of nine coaches to attend the multi-events portion in 2010. "Having competed in the Missouri Valley myself, I know the deep history and pride that goes with UNI Track & Field and I am fully committed to building on those traditions. The opportunity to work under head coach Dan Steele has proven invaluable. I enjoy learning from the entire UNI staff on a daily basis as we work towards Panther dominance in the MVC." Bertoli graduated from Indiana State in 2009 with a degree in Exercise Science. As a student-athlete for the Sycamores, he earned All-Missouri Valley Conference honors in the decathlon in 2009 and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2008. Bertoli also qualified for the 2009 NCAA Mid-East Regional in the 400m hurdles. He held the ISU school record in the indoor heptathlon from 2008-2013. Trey Brokaw
Assistant Coach
Brokaw Trey Brokaw is entering his second year as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs at the University of Northern Iowa. In his first year at Northern Iowa, Brokaw saw great success working with athletes ranging from the 400 meters to the 10,000 meters on the track, as well as both cross country programs in the fall. Under his guidance, athletes such as Cedar Falls natives, Trai Bunch and Terry Nielsen, both cracked the schools top 25 all-time list with their sub 25:00 eight kilometer races in cross country. On the track Brokaws athletes experienced even greater success with Alex Wilson leading the assault on the record books. Three school records went down on the womens side including the womens distance medley relay (11:30) and the 4 x 800 relay (8:45). Besides helping to set those records, Wilson also added the school record in the 1500 to her resume with a 4:22 performance at the Mt. Sac Relays. We saw an incredible amount of success from the student-athletes in our cross country and track & field programs this past year. Without the first class, blue collar work ethics that these young men and women possess, none of this success would have been possible. My first year at the University of Northern Iowa was a memorable one for sure and Im looking forward to being a part of this continued tradition of Panther excellence in the future. In addition to the school records, Brokaw also had many athletes achieve all-conference honors and crack the top five all-time list at UNI. Brette Correy had an incredible freshman campaign playing a hand in both relay school records, as well as finishing in third place at the indoor conference meet in the 800 to earn all-conference honors. Joining her on the relays and also earning all-conference honors in the outdoor 800 was junior Amber Clock. Clocks time of 2:09.93 earned her a spot on the schools top five all-time list as well. In the longer distance events, Alex Wilson made the UNI top five all-time list in the indoor mile and 3000 meter run. Her times of 4:52 and 9:46 rank her 2nd and 3rd prospectively in those events. In addition to making it into the record books, Wilson also achieved all-conference honors in the indoor mile by placing second at the conference meet. Rounding out the success for Brokaws first year at UNI was sophomore 3000 meter steeple chaser, Callie Matthews, who finished the season ranked third all-time in school history for the event. From his early success recruiting and coaching, Brokaw was selected to attend the 2014 Emerging Elite Coaches Camp in Chula Vista, California. This camp is designed for new, promising college cross country and track & field coaches around the world. What is considered to be one of the premier coaching education camps in the country, this week long camp is held at the Olympic Training Center in beautiful southern California. In 2012-13 Brokaw served as an assistant coach at Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. Much like his role at Northern Iowa, he worked with the cross country teams, middle distance and distance events in track. As an athlete at Emporia State University from 2009-2012, Brokaw was team captain and part of the squad that placed fifth at the Division II Indoor National Championships in 2011. That team followed up their fifth place finish indoors with a fourth place finish at the Division II Outdoor National Championships. Brokaw graduated from Emporia State University in 2013 with a Bachelors Degree of Science in Education. Currently he is working towards a Masters Degree in Exercise Science from the University of Northern Iowa.
