Kendell Combs
Assistant Coach
Combs to the Spider family has been felt immediately, said Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. Kendell exudes genuine enthusiasm and gratitude that makes everyone around her better. She will contribute significantly to individual technical growth and professionalism in our training sessions. Kendells passion to serve and teach will compliment our staff greatly. I am thrilled she is devoting her time to our program as she begins her coaching career." The former All-State star at Lakeland High School was a two-time Second-Team All-Atlantic 10 Team member, also earning Colonial Athletic Association All-Rookie Honors in 2011. She played in 72 career games at VCU, scoring 21 goals, including a career-high 10 in her senior season of 2014. That was a year after she led the Rams with 11 assists after her junior campaign. She amassed nine game-winning goals with the Rams in her four-year career. I am thrilled to work alongside coaches who faithfully help me discover the type of coach and person that I strive to be, said Combs. I hope to use my strengths and energy to better serve the Spider hockey team on the field, in the classroom and in all other aspects of life. Richmond is coming off their eighth league championship and the seventh-straight season with 10 or more victories heading into 2015. The Spiders lost the programs all-time scoring leader and A-10 Offensive Player of the Year, Rebecca Barry, as well as the A-10 Championship Most Outstanding Player in goalie Kelley Wentling, but 16 of the 22 members of the 12-win team from a year ago return. The season begins at Crenshaw Field on Friday, August 28, when the Spiders host American at 5 p.m. Additional Thoughts From Kendell Combs: Feelings about coaching former competitors and joining the Richmond team culture A team with a long-standing culture that is respected throughout the Atlantic 10 and NCAA is an aspect of the Spider team that I admire and am blessed to now be a part of. On being a recent graduate of city rival VCU and representing Spider athletics My faith, ultimate motivation and love for the game of field hockey far surpasses any rivalry. As a Ram athlete, I always had much respect for the Spider program and as a coach I plan to exemplify that towards the Rams in the same manner that I did as an athlete. Former VCU midfielder Kendell Combs joined the Spiders field hockey staff in the summer of 2015 as volunteer assistant coach. The Suffolk, Virginia native finished a four-year collegiate career and graduated from VCU with a degree in psychology in May of 2015 before joining the Richmond staff.
