Barbara Hartwig

Assistant Coach

Hartwig was named Assistant Director of Track & Field and Cross Country prior to the 2015-16 season.  She will assist with the overall administration of the Mens & Womens Track & Field and Cross Country programs, including home meet management, travel planning and logistics, facility scheduling, managing alumni relations & fundraising activities, and organizing the programs recruiting efforts.  She also continues in a coaching capacity with the mens and womens track & field programs. Hartwig previously served the program as the Womens Head Cross Country and Track & Field Coach (1989-2009) and Womens Cross Country & Distance Coach (2009-2015).  During her tenure as head coach of the womens track & field program, the Rochester women won a pair of UAA indoor track and field crowns (in 1990 and 1991) and a New York State indoor championship (2008).  She was twice named Coach of the Year by the New York State Collegiate Track Conference, and is a previous winner of the Region I Coach of the Year Award by USA Track and Field. Coach Hartwig was also instrumental in the success of Lauren Norton 12 during 2012 cross country season, as she compiled one of the finest seasons in Yellowjacket history.  Norton became the programs first NYSCTC individual champion in cross country since 1987, and went on to earn All-America honors after a 27th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana. Hartwig is the former Division III President of the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, and was a member of NCAA Division III Track and Field Committee from 1994-1998.  She holds Level I and Level II Coaching Certification through USA Track & Field, and has also served as the Womens Track & Field Chair for the USATF Niagara Association. Hartwig came to the River Campus after two seasons of work as a graduate assistant coach at Ohio State, where she also taught undergraduate physical education classes. Prior to beginning graduate studies at Ohio State, she taught and coached for six years at the scholastic level in Wisconsin. Coach Hartwig is a 1981 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse with dual B.S. degrees in Physical Education and Art Education. She was a four-year member of both the cross country and track and field teams. In her final year at La Crosse, she served as an assistant cross country coach. She also holds a Masters degree in Athletic Administration from The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio.

Sam Albert

Coach

Albert begins his seventh year as the Director of Track & Field and Cross Country in 2015-16.  The Rochester graduate oversees all aspects of the cross country and track & field programs at his alma mater, and trains the teams sprinters and hurdlers during track season.   Rochesters track & field teams enjoyed an outstanding year in 2014-15. The Yellowjacket men captured the 2015 indoor and outdoor New York State Collegiate Track Conference titles, and triple jumper Boubacar Diallo 16 earned All-America honors with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.  The Rochester women also earned an impressive third-place finish at the indoor ECAC Championships, the highest ECAC finish in program history.  Albert and the rest of the Yellowjacket coaches were honored as NYSCTC Mens Coaching Staff of the Year for the 2015 indoor and outdoor seasons.   Since his return to Rochester in 2009, Albert has led a program that has seen numerous NCAA qualifiers and individual conference champions.  Seventeen Yellowjackets have competed at the NCAA Track & Field Championships since 2009, with four going on to earn All-America honors.  The Yellowjackets have also won 68 NYSCTC individual and relay titles over the past six seasons.  In cross country, the UR mens team made three consecutive appearances at the NCAA Championships from 2010-2012, finishing among the top 25 teams in the nation each year, and Rochester runners have earned three All-America honors in cross country since 2009. Coach Albert also oversees a very successful group of Yellowjacket sprinters & hurdlers that have captured 28 NYSCTC titles, won 2 ECAC gold medals, and set 26 new school records over the past four years.  This includes nine new school records set by UR sprinters and hurdlers during the 2015 season. Rochesters student-athletes have been highly successful in the classroom as well, as the cross country and track & field teams have been repeatedly recognized for collective academic achievement by the US Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in recent years.  The mens cross country and track & field programs both had the 6 th -highest cumulative GPA among all NCAA Division III teams during the 2013-2014 academic year. A 2001 Rochester graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology, Albert was a two-time New York State champion and a four-time University Athletic Association champion in the sprints & hurdles. He was a two-year team captain, and held three school records at the time of his graduation. Albert also earned a Masters degree in Education from Rochesters Margaret Warner Graduate School of Education in 2002. This is Alberts second stint on the Yellowjacket coaching staff, having previously served as an assistant coach from 2001-2004. The student-athletes whom he coached broke 20 school records, won four New York State championships, two ECAC championships, and earned three All-America honors in three seasons. Albert also taught high school biology in the Sodus Central School District from 2002-2004. After leaving Rochester in 2004 to pursue a graduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Albert worked in the Tar Heel Athletic Department as a graduate assistant in Event Operations and Facilities. He was awarded a Master of Arts in Exercise & Sport Science/Sport Administration from North Carolina in 2006.  He went on to spend three years as the Coordinator for the Violet Booster Club at New York University (2006-2009), and served as an assistant coach with the NYU Track & Field program from 2008-2009. Coach Albert holds Level 1 coaching certification from USA Track & Field and is a member of both USA Track & Field and the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. He resides in Irondequoit with his wife Mackenzie and their two daughters.

Jay Petsch

Coach

Petsch begins his third season on the Rochester coaching staff in 2015-16, after joining the University in 2013.  He works with the Yellowjacket long & triple jumpers, pole vaulters, and multi-event athletes. A former Division I student-athlete at the University of Wyoming, Petsch came to the River Campus after spending two years as a Graduate Assistant Coach at Northwest Missouri State University.   Coach Petsch has led the Rochester jumps and multi-event groups to great success during his first two seasons.  He coached triple jumper Boubacar Diallo to All-America honors with a fourth-place finish at the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Championships, the first Yellowjacket jumps All-American since Anthony Palumbo won the 1974 NCAA Championship in the triple jump.  Coach Petsch also led the Yellowjacket mens long jumpers to a 1-2-3 sweep at the 2015 NYSCTC Indoor Championships, and Diallo won the 2015 NYSCTC outdoor crown in the triple jump.  During Coach Petschs first two years on staff, the Yellowjacket jumpers and multi-event athletes have won 3 NYSCTC titles, earned 8 conference runner-up finishes, had 2 NCAA qualifiers, and set 5 new school records.  A total of nine Yellowjackets also earned top-50 national rankings in the jumps and multi-events during the 2015 season.   Coach Petsch was also honored by his peers by being named 2015 Atlantic Region Mens Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.   Prior to coming to Rochester, Petsch spent two years on the coaching staff at Division II Northwest Missouri State, working primarily with the Bearcat pole vaulters, jumpers, and multi-event athletes.  His top mens pole vaulter won the 2013 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) title and earned a berth at the 2013 NCAA Division II Championships.  The teams top womens pole vaulter also earned an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark during the 2013 outdoor season under Coach Petschs tutelage, and he worked with a third NCAA Provisional qualifier in the Decathlon.  Petsch also provided administrative support to the NWMSU Track and Cross Country programs, assisting with recruiting, travel arrangements, and management of home competitions.   Petsch also spent a season coaching hurdlers & jumpers at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Arizona in 2011, and completed a summer internship as an Assistant Compliance Officer with the University of Wyoming Athletic Department in 2012.   A versatile student-athlete at the University of Wyoming, Petsch earned All-Mountain West Conference honors in the Decathlon and Heptathlon and served as team captain in 2010.  His personal best score of 7,112 points at the 2010 Mountain West Decathlon Championship was good enough for conference runner-up honors, and ranked in the top 40 nationally in Division I that season.  Petsch helped the Cowboys in a variety of events during his collegiate career, achieving conference-scoring performances in the Heptathlon, Decathlon, Long Jump, 60 hurdles, and 4x400 relay.  He was also selected to participate in the NCAA Division I Leadership Conference in 2008, and served as Vice President of Wyomings Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.   Petsch earned a Bachelors degree in Business Finance from Wyoming in 2010, and a Masters degree in Applied Health Science from Northwest Missouri State in 2013.  He also earned Level 1 Coaching Certification from USA Track & Field in 2011.

Eddie Novara

Coach

Novara begins his second season on the River Campus in 2016 leading the Rochester cross country teams and distance athletes in track and field. He came to UR from Binghamton University after two years as an assistant coach with both cross country and track teams plus one year as a volunteer assistant coach at SUNY Geneseo. Novara is a 2012 graduate of Geneseo (B.A. English). During his first season with the Yellowjacket cross country teams, UR enjoyed some success, especially on the women's side where the team qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships as a team for the first time since 1987, eventually ending in 14th place of over 30 schools.  That followed a runner-up finish at the UAA Championships for the women as well, again the best result for a UR's women's squad since 1988. Novara's athletes also excelled in the classroom as well, with four women and three men being named Scholar Athletes by the USTFCCCA.  Both the men's and women's teams as a whole also earned the Team Academic Award from the USTFCCCA during 2015.   Novara joined the coaching staff at Binghamton while earning his master's degree (M.A., Teaching with a Concentration in English, 2015). The Bearcats won the America East title in men's cross country last fall. The Binghamton coaches were recognized as the America East Coaching Staff of the Year during the 2014 indoor track seasons and then for the 2014 cross country season.   In track, he worked with Jesse Garn, a two-time USA Championship Qualifier and an All-American in the 800 meter run. The Binghamton men also ran the fastest 4x800 meter relay in the nation in the 2014 indoor season on their way to an IC4A title.   As a student-athlete, Novara earned three straight All-America honors in cross country (2009-11) as well as All-Region honors in each of those seasons. In his senior year, he helped the Knights to a runnerup team finish at the NCAA Atlantic Regionals and a fourth place finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.   On the track, Novara was the SUNYAC Champion in the Mile, the 1,500, and the 10,000 meter runs as a senior. He was named Geneseo's Athlete of the Year in 2012 and accumulated 15 All-SUNYAC honors between cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track.

Paul Rose

Coach

Roses 11th season at the University of Rochester. He is responsible for coaching all throwing events for the Yellowjackets, and has advanced knowledge in weightlifting & strength training. The mens and womens throwing program has reached unprecedented levels of success under Coach Roses tutelage.  In 2011, he guided Yaneve Fonge 11 to one of the most successful seasons in Rochester Track & Field history.  Fonge earned All-America honors in the 20-lb. Weight Throw after finishing 2nd at the NCAA Indoor Championships with a toss of 19.24 meters, the fourth farthest throw in NCAA Division III history.  Coach Rose also helped Fonge capture four NYSCTC titles during 2011 in the Weight Throw, Hammer, and the indoor & outdoor Shot Put. She also claimed ECAC Division III titles in the Weight Throw and Hammer and had NCAA automatic qualifying performances in both events. In ten seasons at Rochester, Rose has coached three All-Americans and twelve NCAA qualifiers, including two-time All-American Mike Burgstrom (08). The Yellowjacket throwers have captured seven New York State Collegiate Track Conference titles and three ECAC championships under Roses guidance, and the team has had numerous NYSCTC and ECAC qualifiers in the throwing events. Prior to coming to the River Campus, Rose was an assistant mens & womens track & field coach at SUNY Brockport from 2000 to 2002, where he supervised the throwing events for the Golden Eagles. During that time, he coached an NCAA All-American, 6 NCAA qualifiers, 6 NYSCTC champions, 6 SUNYAC champions, and an ECAC champion. A 1999 graduate of Brockport, Rose was a two-time NCAA automatic qualifier in the 35 lb. Weight Throw in 1998 and 1999. He is the former Brockport school record holder in that event, and holds a personal record of 19.22 meters. In 1999, he was also a provisional qualifier in the Hammer Throw, and has a personal record of 53.94 meters. He finished in the top six at State, Regional, and ECAC competitions a total of 41 times during his collegiate career. Rose lives in Hamlin, N.Y., with his wife Karen, also a former collegiate thrower and a member of the SUNY Brockport Hall of Fame, and their four children.
