Jack Kennedy
Head Coach
Kennedy served in various capacities with USFs mens basketball program for five seasons from 2008-12. He served as a graduate assistant coach on Rex Walters staff for two seasons (2008-10) before being promoted to director of basketball operations. He moved into a full-time coaching capacity for the 2012-13 campaign. A four-year golf letter winner at Grinnell (Iowa) College, Kennedy earned first team All-Midwest Conference honors in 2006. He also played basketball for the Pioneers under legendary head coach David Arseneault. During his sophomore season, Grinnell led the nation in scoring with a then NCAA-record 126.2 points per game. He was responsible for starting the womens golf program at The Gregory School, his high school alma mater located in Tucson, Ariz. The team qualified for the state tournament in its first year of existence. An accomplished player, Kennedy has competed in both the Arizona and California State Amateur Championships. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Kennedy earned his degree in political science from Grinnell in 2006 and his masters degree from USFs highly-acclaimed sports management program in 2010. Gary Nelson
Coach
Nelson moved into the role of director of golf for the mens and womens programs in the fall of 2009. He relinquished his duties in 2010 when he was appointed USFs interim athletic director, where he successfully led a smooth administrative transition leading up to the appointment of Scott Sidwell in May of 2011. Nelson then resumed his administrative duties with both golf programs and added the title of associate athletic director for alumni affairs. During his tenure as head coach of the mens program, the Dons rose from 285 to 42 in the national rankings. In 2009, he was named the West Coast Conferences Coach of the Year after guiding the Dons to their first WCC title in 19 years. Nelson graduated magna cum laude with a degree in engineering from California Maritime Academy in 1961. He spent the next seven years as an officer with the Merchant Marines and served as a lieutenant commander in the U.S. Navy from 1968-70. A longtime practicing dental surgeon, Nelson earned his D.D.S. degree from the University of the Pacific in 1968 and his M.S.D degree from the University of North Carolina in 1972. An accomplished golfer, Nelson competed in the U.S. and British Senior Amateur Championships and has remains active in various golf organizations, including the Honorable Society of San Francisco Golfers. He was also a competitive long distance runner, logging 15 marathons and numerous ultra-marathons, including the Western States 100, the worlds oldest and most prestigious 100-mile trail race. He qualified for the Boston Marathon in both the under and over 40 divisions. Gary resides in Mill Valley with his wife, Dr. Kellie Magee. He has four grown children, Mathew, Adrienne, Gary and Whitney. His son Mathew serves as the mens golf coach at Dominican University in San Rafael. Dr. Gary Nelson
