He is the 12th head coach in the women's volleyball program history. He has led the Royals to a total of 232 victories including a school record 35 in 2017 when he was named the Landmark Conference Coach of the Year and saw junior Kristin Kirwin earn All-American honorable mention accolades. In 2021, senior middle hitter Eryn Boken became the third player in program history to earn AVCA All-American honors and the Royals went 25-8 on the season to earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2005.  Scranton earned consecutive at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament in 2021 & 2022 and notched a 3-0 victory over St. John Fisher in the opening round of the 2022 tournament.  In his first 12 seasons at the helm, Spangler has led the Royals to berths in the Landmark Conference Tournament in each season highlighted by runner-up finishes in 2017, 2021, 2022, 2023 & 2024. Spangler also led Scranton to 23 wins in 2014 - when he mentored the University's first volleyball All-American, senior Julia Crilly - and 25 victories in 2015, the most in a campaign since 2007. Spangler, came to Scranton after spending 2012-13 as the head boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach at nearby Abington Heights High School in Clarks Summit, Pa., where he graduated in 2005. Spangler led the Lady Comets to a 16-4 record and a runner-up finish in District 2 during the fall season. In the spring campaign, he led the boys to a 12-3 finish and second place in the Lackawanna League. Prior to taking the coaching position at Abington Heights, Spangler spent four years (2009-12) as the head coach of the Pittsburgh women’s volleyball club, a student-run organization at the University of Pittsburgh that competed in approximately three to five events each semester, including the National Collegiate Club Volleyball Championships in the spring. While at Pittsburgh, Spangler served as the president of the University of Pittsburgh men’s club volleyball from 2007 to 2009. The club team is a member of the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation, which promotes organized collegiate club volleyball for men and women. The team at Pitt annually competed in tournaments both at Pitt and at other universities across the country in both the fall and spring semesters. Spangler is a native of Clarks Summit. Ashley Zalewski enters her sixth season as an assistant coach for the University of Scranton volleyball program in 2021.  During her five years with the Royals, Scranton has compiled a 91-56 (.619) overall record while making appearances in the Landmark Conference playoffs in all four seasons the Landmark playoffs were contested.  Highlighting Zalewski's time at Scranton is a 35-5 record and Landmark Conference runner-up finish in 2017. Zalewski, a native of nearby Factoryville, Pa., joins the Royals program off a one-year stint as an assistant coach at her alma mater Marywood University, serving in that role for the last year. Zalewski entered the coaching ranks after a banner four-year career as a member of the volleyball team at Marywood, where she earned All-CSAC honors three times (second team in 2012 and first team in both 2013 and 2014). In her senior season of 2014 (when she also served as team captain), she set the program record for attack percentage in a campaign (.353) and ranked 15th in the country in hitting percentage at the end of the year (.364). Zalewski prepped at Tunkhannock High School, where she earned All-State honors in 2010 and was a selection to the Wyoming Valley Conference First Team All-Star squad back-to-back years (2009 and 2010). The offensive player of the year in 2009 and MVP of the team in 2010, she also served as Tunkhannock's team captain in her senior season of 2010. Zalewski, who is also the boys assistant volleyball coach at Abington Heights High School, earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Marywood in May of 2015 with a concentration in Interior Architecture/Design.

Sadie Doss joins the Royals for her first full year after recently earning her Master of Education in Higher Education in Student Affairs from Kutztown University in May. A standout student-athlete, she played four years of collegiate volleyball—three during her undergraduate studies and one as a graduate student—after transferring from West Chester University. She completed her undergraduate degree with a B.S. in Sport Management. During her career at Kutztown, Doss earned several honors, including: D2CCA All-Atlantic Region Second Team 2× All-PSAC East First Team 2× CSC Academic All-District Team 2023 Kutztown University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year 2× Team Captain She finished her collegiate career with an impressive 899 kills and 756 digs. With a strong foundation in athletics and higher education, Doss brings both competitive experience and a passion for student development to the Royals program.
