Travis Traphagen

Head Coach

Travis Traphagen has made a significant impact with the University of Sioux Falls Women’s Basketball Team. In his 18th season at USF, he has established a career record of 301-187. Traphagen has led the Cougars to an NAIA quarterfinal appearance, two NCAA central region berths, 11 NSIC tournament appearances, an NSIC tournament title as well as an NSIC South Division title. Traphagen has led the Cougars to 12 winning seasons with an eight year streak from 2014 to 2022. Before coming to USF, he was the head assistant women’s basketball coach at Augustana College (S.D.) from 2001-2008. The Vikings were 111-69 while he was an assistant coach. Traphagen served as a graduate assistant at Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb., where he earned a master’s degree in sports administration. Prior to his coaching career, Traphagen earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Black Hills State University, where he played college basketball for three years. He was a two-time all-conference selection, including team Co-Captain and Co-MVP during the 1999 season. During Traphagen’s time at BHSU, the Yellow Jackets won three consecutive South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference championships. He holds the Yellow Jackets single season record for made 3-pointers with 97 that he set during the 1997-98 season. Traphagen and his wife, Ann, reside in Sioux Falls with their three children, Grayson, Rylie and Luke. Grant Hieb

Head Coach

Hieb takes over for Matt Guiliano, who recently accepted the head coaching job at Cal-State-San. Marcos. This past season, he was part of the staff that directed USF to a program-best 21 wins and the number eight seed in the NSIC Tournament. The Cougars also finished with 14 league victories, which tied the 2015 team for the most in the D2 era. For the third straight year, USF has had an All-NSIC selection (Henry Ojeda, 2014; Matthew Minnick, 2015; and Dylan Gavin, 2016). In addition, Hieb has been part of the staff that steered the Cougars through the challenging transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II athletics.   In 2003, Hieb earned a bachelors degree in wellness from USF. Prior to attending USF, Hieb graduated from Sioux Falls (SD) Lincoln High School and played for Sioux Falls Post 15 East.  Aside from his work at USF, Hieb coached the Brandon Valley (S.D.) Senior American Legion baseball team for the past five summers, leading them to three Class A State Tournaments with the 2013 team finishing runner-up.    After graduating from USF, Hieb joined former USF head coach Luke Langenfelds staff as a student assistant. After coaching the fall season, he moved to Henderson, Nev., where he served as an assistant baseball coach at Foothill High School in the fall of 2007 through the spring of 2008. He returned to USF in 2009 when Guiliano hired him as an assistant coach. Hieb was a standout collegiate player, beginning his career as a rightfielder/pitcher for Iowa Lakes Community College in Estherville, Iowa. At Iowa Lakes, he hit .391 as a sophomore, earning first-team all-region honors. He transferred to Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, where he was named Academic All-Conference. He hit leadoff for Grand View, hitting .343 with an on-base percentage of .471. Hieb transferred to USF for his senior season and led the team in hitting at .395, hits with 58  and on-base percentage at .473. A right fielder, he was named All-Great Plains Athletic Conference first team. Hieb and his wife, Catrina, a USF soccer and track alum, have a daughter, Amelia.

Chris Johnson

Head Coach

Chris Johnson is entering his 18th season at the helm of the USF Men's Basketball program. Johnson was named the 2019-20 NSIC Coach of the Year and has had a significant impact on the USF Men’s Basketball program.  Johnson has led the Cougars to an NAIA Sweet 16 appearance, two GPAC post season tournament championships, 10 NSIC tournament appearances, six 20-win seasons, and one NSIC South Division title. Under the direction of Johnson, the Cougars have had 12 winning seasons. Before arriving in Sioux Falls, Johnson was the top assistant coach for three seasons at the University of North Dakota. Prior to joining the UND coaching staff, Johnson spent the 2004-05 season as head coach at Culver-Stockton College. He was named 2004-05 Heart of America Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. Prior to arriving at Culver-Stockton, Johnson served as an assistant coach at Minot State from 2001-04. Before that he served as an assistant at Minnesota State-Mankato from 1999-2001 and Central College from 1998-99 in Pella, Iowa. Johnson was a two-year starting guard for the Dutch of Central College, lettering all four seasons. He graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. He received a master’s degree in sports administration from Minnesota State-Mankato, in 2005.   Johnson and his wife, Amy, have four children including Bailey, TJ, Zeke and Lucy. Grant Hieb

Grant Hieb is in his tenth season as the head baseball coach of the USF Baseball program. He has established a career record of 167-243 while at the helm of Cougar Baseball. Hieb has led the Cougars to one NSIC Tournament appearance in 2016. In 2003, Hieb earned a bachelor’s degree in wellness from the University of Sioux Falls. After graduating from USF, Hieb joined former USF head coach Luke Langenfeld’s staff as a student assistant. Shawn Bergan

Assistant Coach

Shawn Bergan is in his eleventh season as an assistant coach with the University of Sioux Falls Women's Basketball team.  During his time, he has helped lead USF to a 155-73 record with eight winning seasons. In 2019-20, Bergan helped lead USF to its first-ever NSIC South Division title and a top-10 national ranking. The Cougars earned the top South seed in the NSIC Tourney that season while also receiving a national ranking in the WBCA for the first time at the DII level. USF also secured its second NCAA DII Central Region Tourney berth as the No. 3 seed. Bergan was part of the coaching staff that guided the Cougars to the school’s first of many NSIC Tournament Championships in 2016. Before coming to USF, Bergan spent five seasons as a part-time assistant coach at Augustana starting in 2008 after serving seven seasons as the head coach of the girls' basketball program at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School. He has been involved with coaching basketball for the past 23 years, working with high school boys' and girls' programs and men’s and women’s college teams.  Bergan earned a Bachelor of Arts in business administration from the University of Sioux Falls and a Master of Science in athletic administration from South Dakota State University. He also has a teaching certificate from Augustana, where he was also a part-time assistant for the Augustana men's team from 1991 to 1994. Originally from Webster,South Dakota, Bergan and his wife Ginger, who is a physical education teacher in the Sioux Falls School District, live in Sioux Falls with their son, Bo and daughters, Gracie and Anna. Drew Guebert

Assistant Coach

Drew Guebert is going into his fourth year as assistant coach with the USF men’s basketball team. He is directly involved with all basketball activities, helps coordinate and run camps, and supports athletes in their academic responsibilities. Before becoming assistant coach, Guebert served as a USF men’s basketball graduate assistant for a year. Prior to joining USF, Guebert played professional basketball for two years in Spain with Basquet Menorca. He helped lead that team to the playoff semifinals in 2021.  Prior to his professional career, Guebert was a two-time All-NSIC selection, including first team honors in 2018-19. He’s been named three times to the Academic All-NSIC squad and ranks as one of the best players in USF school history as he sits third on the USF career scoring list with 1,971 points. Throughout his career at USF, he scored 25 points or more 12 times and earned three NSIC Player of the Week honors as well as a U.S. Basketball Writers National Player of the Week honor. He finished seventh on the NSIC all-time scoring list (league games only) with 1,423 points, finished his career with 63 consecutive starts. During his career, he averaged 16.3 points in 122 games with 104 starts, set the school record in made three-pointers with 264, led USF to a 71-51 record (48-40 in the NSIC) and accumulated 92 double-digit scoring games with 43 games of 20 points or more. Guebert ranks fourth all-time at USF in games player with 121 and totaled five double doubles. He is the first player in school history to convert 59 or more threes in a season four straight years. In total, Guebert had 484 defensive boards and 125 offensive boards with 122 assists, 84 blocked shots, 54 steals and made a three in 104 games. Forty-four times he made at least three triples in a game and 76 times had two or more with a career-high seven. Drew Guebert is originally from Apple Valley, Minnesota and graduated from Eastview High School. He currently resides in Sioux Falls with his wife Jacey (Huinker) Guebert, who played for the USF Women’s Basketball team from 2015-2020. Rob Hirrschoff

Coach

Rob Hirrschoff is in his fifth year as an assistant coach for the USF Men’s Baseball team. He currently serves as the pitching coach for the Coo. Hirrschoff has experience both as a player and as a coach. He started his athletic career at South Dakota State University where he played for the Jackrabbits from 1997-2002 while earning All-North Central Conference honors in 2002. From 2003-04, he served as a student assistant for SDSU Baseball. He also served as the Head Coach for the Brookings Legion Post 74 from 2005-2014. He directed the Brookings Legion team to a state title in 2012 which was a first for that program. In 2014, Hirrschoff served as pitching coach for the Rochester Honkers of the Northwoods League. After a brief time away from the Legion team to run his own business, he took over as Head Coach/Coaching Director for Brookings Baseball in 2017.  Hirrschoff earned his bachelor’s in liberal studies from SDSU in 2002.  Updated: 5/2025
